LOCAL HIGHLIGHTS THIS WEEK

The 14th edition of Virée Blues Boréale presents

The Yohawks

Le Troquet Bistro, 41 Laval Street (Old Hull sector), Gatineau QC

Wednesday, October 12 @ 8 pm

It’s now a tradition: October being the birthday month of one of Virée Blues Boréale’s team members, our gracious hostess, Katrina, has been offered a carte blanche to select the guest artists of our next production. She couldn’t resist choosing a very recent discovery: we were appointed judges to the “Road To Memphis” competition, sponsored by the Ottawa Blues Society and were dazzled at the first notes played by that group. The musical arrangements by those perfectly synchronized 9 musicians were a demonstration of the richness of the style they acquired through their many years of career. No need to tell you who won the competition that night! So, to mark our marvellous Katrina’s birthday, it is our pleasure to present the largest group to perform on Virée Blues Boréale’s stage: The Yohawks.

An R&B/Soul ensemble based in Ottawa, this group is masterfully directed by not one but three “highly experienced” musicians who act as lead singers, combining their voices in an inimitable mix. They are Dave Poulin, who also plays bass, Keith Richardson, on guitar and Brad Campbell, on guitar as well. They are some kind of extension of the famous D Five group who was so popular throughout the ‘60s. After performing together for over forty years, as is often the case after many successful years, they dampened their common project to turn to different musical projects and concentrate on their families. A few years ago, they got back together, with Brian Bradfield on drums. They also brought a solid team of renowned musicians with them: Ray Lemaire on keyboards, and an incredible brass section featuring Mark Ferguson on trombone, Nick Dyson on trumpet, Mike Tremblay on tenor sax and Brian Asselin on baritone sax. With their first album “MPH” launched in 2009, The Yohawks offer a completely original repertoire of R&B of the ‘60s style with shades of rock and Motown, presented in a very tight ensemble and intensified by a solid and well-balanced brass section.

An experience worthy of yester-years‘ large ensembles shows.

SPECIAL EVENTS COMING SOON

Chris Antonik

Rainbow, 76 Murray Street

Saturday, October 22 @ 10 pm

The debut solo album from Toronto guitarist Chris Antonik is a diverse, soulful and tightly executed blend of classic guitar blues and original, innovative, contemporary blues-rock. After thrilling audiences in Toronto blues clubs as a sideman, Antonik has stepped out on his own to deliver this self-produced collection of original material and two classic blues covers.

The album “Chris Antonik” is a portrait of a maturing blues guitarist and songwriter who fully grasps the importance of song over solo - while still leaving plenty for guitar fans to enjoy. The songs deal with repairing relationships and giving back to those around you, as well as classic blues themes delivered in modern vehicles. Using the guitarist–as–front man approach and a variety of guest vocalists, the record is a solid collection of soulful, strong and smart blues.

Chris and his band make their Ottawa debut at the Rainbow, Saturday, October 22. This is a ‘don’t miss’ show!

Matt Andersen

With Old Man Luedecke

Centrepointe Theatre, 101 Centrepointe Drive

Friday, October 28 @ 8 pm; tickets $42

Matt’s newest album, “Coal Mining Blues”, was produced by Colin Linden (who co-wrote and plays on several tunes) and recorded at Levon Helm Studios in Woodstock, New York. Featuring the Band keyboardist Garth Hudson and Olabelle singer Amy Helm, it’s a rich vein of new songs, many addressing the trying lives of working people: There’s the self-explanatory “Work Hard for the Luxury,” and the moving title track, which rings true in mining communities from Cape Breton to Sheffield and West Virginia. But not all of “Coal Mining Blues” is about hard work, as rollicking up-tempo cuts like ‘Lay it on the Line’ and ‘Fired Up’ bear out.

http://www.stubbyfingers.ca/

On September 20 Matt sets off on the sort of tour that would kill a lesser man. He’ll be in Ottawa at the end of October. And quick note — some dates have already sold out, and tickets are going fast.

Check out his new video at http://www.eastcoastkitchenparty.net/Music_Matt_Anderson.php

Old Man Luedecke is one of Canada’s best loved and most intriguing roots singer-songwriters. His memorable melodies, poetic sense and easy charisma appeal to anyone searching for new growth from old roots … his contemporary lyrics coupled with the irresistible rhythm of the old time banjo that connect and make him so loved with his audiences.

National Steel ‘Bad Boy’ Blues Tour

Doc MacLean & Big Dave McLean

The Acoustic Grill, 172 Main Street, Picton ON

Thursday, November 3

‘Bad Boy’ is the sixth annual version of the National Steel Blues Tour. Featuring songs and stories in the round and performances on vintage National guitars, the all acoustic event has long been “Canada’s biggest little blues and roots tour.” The iconic expedition routinely travels as many as 25 thousand km by land, with its motto “Bring the Blues to Your Town, no venue too big, too small, too grand or too humble.” Past performances have been featured on CBC Radio’s “Concert on Demand,” “Canada Live,” and “Saturday Night Blues.”

It’s not about fancy tour buses and slick, new guitars. Out on the Blues Highway it’s a battered 1994 Lincoln Town Car with speakers mounted on the roof. It’s Doc and Big Dave driving through town to promote the show. It’s the guys hauling their gear in and setting up their own PA. And then it’s a lifetime of songs and stories delivered by two guys who have been there and done it all – ‘Bad Boy’ Blues.

For tickets, call The Acoustic Grill - (613)476-2887

Doug MacLeod

Alcorn Music Studios, 953 Gladstone Avenue
Saturday, November 5

Blues Workshop ($45/person) 2pm - 5 pm

Blues Concert ($25/person) 7:30 pm

True blues. These two words define in style and commitment the acoustic music composed and played by Doug MacLeod, a singer-songwriter in the American tradition. MacLeod has been a beacon of unquestionably honest roots-music since the 1970s. Proof enough: 18 albums, a couple of DVDs, and

thousands of gigs stateside and overseas. And in December, the announcement by the Blues Foundation of his nomination for the 2011 Blues Music Award as Acoustic Artist of the Year. Now, the release of his new album, “Brand New Eyes” on the new label Fresh! from RR, a division of the 35 year-old multi-Grammy nominated, audiophile label Reference Recordings. With liner notes by Downbeat columnist and Grove Press author Frank-John Hadley, “Brand New Eyes” offers Doug's sincere voice and lyric ease supported by his highly individual guitar stylings.

On “Brand New Eyes”, MacLeod presents 11 original songs. In a genre often reliant on old standards, he is the rare traveling artist who writes and sings original songs that are based on his own life and experiences. He learned from the old masters, lived the music, survived the life and carries forward a

valuable tradition. MacLeod is known for his superb song-writing, guitar wizardry, warm soulful vocals, wit and unforgettable live performances. At the heart of this is his knack for storytelling, bringing characters - from the faceless to the legendary - to strikingly real life.

“I see so many people walking around and they don’t see anything good in the world,” MacLeod says of the title track. “But maybe it’s not the world, maybe it’s you. To see some good in the world, put on some brand new eyes.”

Coco Montoya

Rainbow, 76 Murray Street

Thursday, November 17

******************************************************

Averaging over 150 tour dates a year, guitarist and vocalist Coco Montoya’s explosive guitar playing and soul-driven voice have propelled him to the upper reaches of the blues-rock world. From his early days as a drummer to his current status as one of the top-drawing guitarists and vocalists on the blues-rock scene, Montoya has forged his reputation through years of hard work and constant touring. And it all started with a chance meeting in the mid-1970s with legendary bluesman Albert Collins, who offered Montoya a gig as his drummer. Albert took an immediate liking to Montoya, becoming his mentor and teaching his new protégé secrets of the Collins ‘icy hot’ style of blues guitar. Five years later, John Mayall happened to catch Montoya at a jam session and was blown away. This led to Montoya’s touring the world for ten years with the legendary Bluesbreakers. Since stepping out as a bandleader in 1993, Montoya has released solo albums and has performed non-stop at clubs, concert halls and major festivals all over the world. At every show, fans’ jaws drop, and critics rave about Montoya’s mind-bending guitar licks and impassioned vocals.

Douglas Watson R& B Revue

Rainbow, 76 Murray Street

Friday, November 18

Raised in Chicago Illinois by Claudia and Eddie ‘Lovie Lee’ Watson, Douglas Watson was born to sing the Blues. Early in his life his first love was the church, where he learned to cherish the soulful sounds of Gospel Music. He later branched out into the world of Blues & R&B Soul, encouraged and inspired by his father and his step brother, the late Carey Bell.

From an early age Douglas learned to love music and performing from his father. Lovie played piano with Howlin’ Wolf, John Lee Hooker, B.B. King and The Muddy Waters Band. Douglas recalls his early years as a youngster listening to his dad’s rehearsals in the house they lived in Chicago. This mentoring from the best, combined with years of performing has molded Watson into a superb singer and bass guitarist.

Early in his career Douglas worked as a session musician. He played with various Chicago artists including, Koko Taylor, Albert Collins, BB King, John Lee Hooker, Lonnie Brooks, and toured with A.C. Reed and The Sparkplugs for nine years.

Moving his talent north, after several years in London, Ontario, Douglas settled in Kitchener, Ontario where he met Mississippi Pete Temple and their partnership formed The Douglas Watson R&B Revue. The band consists of Chris ‘Mr. Sweetness’ Latta on guitar, Maciej ‘Mr. Magic’ Lukasiewicz on drums and partner ‘Mississippi Pete Temple’ on Harmonica. The band has been together six years and in 2007 won the Toronto Blues Society New Talent Search. In that same year they were recorded live on CKMS Radio. This gave fans and critics an inkling of the band’s potential.

Douglas Watson has been noted for his ‘full throated vocal style… that is matched by few’. His range and style have brought him much acclaim from some of the most respected R&B vocalists in the industry, including the late James Brown. It has recently been written that Douglas Watson “ Is one of the finest vocalists and front man on the Canadian scene”. This record shows why.

Leon Redbone

Shenkman Arts Centre, 245 Centrum Boulevard, Orleans ON

Thursday, December 1; tickets $41.25

Leon Redbone — a master guitarist, dry comedian, and a warm and witty singer who recreates the classic jazz, blues and pop music of the ’20s and ’30s — will make his first appearance in Ottawa since, as he put it “I can’t remember when.”

In fact, he probably does know when he was last in Ottawa, but he has always cultivated an aura of mystery about his background, in part because he wants the emphasis to be placed on the music, rather than the “personality” behind it.

He does, however, claim to have been born in 1929 (on the date of the stock market crash), but later told interviewers he was born in Bombay during a monsoon to violinist Niccolo Paganini and Swedish soprano Jenny Lind. (It should be noted that Paganini died in 1840, and Lind in 1887).

Mr. Redbone is a laid-back singer, a dry story-teller, and an archivist with wide musical tastes — as long as the music is more than 70 years old. His concerts will likely include forgotten old pop songs, classic ragtime, blues from the likes of Lonnie Johnson or Blind Blake, and jazz standards by Fats Waller or Dixieland jazz pioneer Nick La Rocca.

He began his career in Toronto in 1970 and in his early days, he could be found in the pool hall that used to exist in the entrance to a downtown subway station; if you asked for Mr. Grunt, he would, guardedly, answer the telephone. A fixture in local folk clubs, he also had an acoustic duo, called Little Sonny, with David Wilcox.

Since then he has gone on to make numerous television performances (he was a regular for many years on the Johnny Carson Show, as well as on Saturday Night Live), and he has recorded some 15 albums, the first in 1975. He has toured around the world, appeared in numerous television commercials, and was even featured in a Far Side cartoon. He recently recorded material for the television series Boardwalk Empire.

A superb acoustic guitarist, Mr. Redbone is also a skilled pool player and is dangerous with a deck of cards; people are advised not to engage him in either pursuit.

The first hour is dedicated to artist profiles and reviews of recordings on particular labels. In the second hour there is a blues calendar, a rundown of events in Toronto, Montreal and Ottawa, and interviews with “new and reissued blues and rhythm and blues tracks on wax”, alternating with “live blues and R&B for a Sunday night” in the last half hour of the show. CBC RADIO CONCERTS ON DEMAND

*******************************************************

Wednesday, October 12, 2011
concert 1: The Sojourners
, recorded at St. James Hall in Vancouver
From the moment Jim Byrnes invited Marcus Mosely and his pals, Will Sanders and Ron Small, to step up to the microphone and sing, The Sojourners realized that they had something very special going on. After a Herculean schedule during the 2010 Winter Olympics, and touring their self-titled sophomore album through Europe, The Sojourners released their new album in front of a hometown Vancouver crowd. St. James Hall in Kitsilano was packed to the rafters on this warm early-summer Friday night. The three-piece gospel trio was joined on stage by Steve Dawson, Keith Lowe, Geoff Hicks and Bob Murphy. Khari McClelland filled in for an ailing Ron Small. Canada Live was there to record the show that raised the faithful to their feet all night long.

Friday, October 14, 2011
concert 1: East Coast Blues Summit
, recorded at CBC Studio One in Halifax
The east coast has been a hotbed of blues music for at least the past fifty years. Many styles and influences -- country blues, swing, urban, jump -- have contributed to what is now an east coast sound and approach. CBC in the Maritimes decided the time was right to showcase this wealth of blues. The East Coast Blues Summit brings together various influences and styles, with an incredible group of Maritime singers and musicians on one stage, performing both songs that have inspired them, as well as originals. Matt Andersen, Morgan Davis, Linda Carvery, Garrett Mason, Theresa Malenfant, and Carson Downey are all award-winning artists with deep blues roots and emotional delivery. The backing band is also a special group of players, all being recording artists in their own right. From the very first notes of rehearsals through to showtime, there was an atmosphere of excitement and joy to be playing together as a gatherin

g of great music and players, and you'll feel that excitement as you listen to this engaging concert.

Lots of blues available in the concerts on demand section of the CBC Website …
