LOCAL HIGHLIGHTS THIS WEEK

******************************************************

The 14th edition of Virée Blues Boréale presents

Linda ‘Chocolate Thunder’ Rodney

Le Petit Chicago, 50 promenade du Portage (Old Hull sector)

Wednesday, September 28 @ 8 pm

Each and every artist who has performed at Virée Blues Boréale carries the ‘Soul of the Blues’, but few have actually experienced it within their lives! One of the last of her kind, our next guest was actually a cotton picker in South Carolina in the ‘60s, working long days with her grand parents, even though she was too young for that work! All of her, body and soul, recall the extreme harshness of those days she longed to be saved from. "You see, I not only can sing the Blues, but I also know why we sing it." says Linda ‘Chocolate Thunder’ Rodney.

Linda ‘Chocolate Thunder’ Rodney is renowned for her warm and powerful voice as well as for her incredible presence. A true Blues Woman she is professional, funny and self- assured. After struggling up each of the stairs of her career through performances in a variety of clubs, festivals and events within South Carolina, she pursued her crossing of the continent to California and then all the way to Paris, France, to Italy and more recently, to Canada. Popular demand from fans encouraged Chocolate Thunder to release her debut album “Barkin' Up the Wrong Tree” in 2007. In 2009, she returns with “Ear Candy”, a collection of original compositions that ranges from Blues to Soul to classic R&B with shades of Funk and Motown. Both albums received very positive reviews from the public as well as from the critics.

Certainly Linda ‘Chocolate Thunder’ Rodney’s career path has not been an easy one, but today, looking back, she wouldn't take anything in the world for that experience of her early childhood, because now, when she gets up to sing, she surely can deliver through those songs the feelings of what she heard and saw. Don’t miss that powerful experience!

******************************************************

Ross Neilsen & the Suffrin’ Bastards

Rainbow, 76 Murray Street

Friday, September 30 @ 10 pm

To say that Ross Neilsen is a dedicated, chronic over achiever would be an understatement. Recently, he has been honoured with a nomination for Best New Artist at The Maple Blues Awards, two Rising Star nominations from CBC and back-to-back Blues Album of the Year nominations from the East Coast Music Association. A true road warrior in every sense, Ross Neilsen has spent much of the last two years living out of his van. Two albums in six months, over 200 four-hour shows a year, and a logbook of over 80,000 km covering three national tours.

Whether telling tall tales or capturing the spirit of the blues through his own originals and unique covers in his intimate solo shows or combining clever lyrics with old school, in-your-face guitar playing with his band, he will take you on an emotional journey through the joys and pains of life, death, triumph and defeat … he will touch your heart, soul, body and mind, sending you home to sing yourself to sleep. And in the morning? You will want more, much more.

Maria Muldaur & Her Red Hot Bluesiana Band

CD Release Party

Opening – Canada’s own guitar legend, Rick Fines

Grand Theatre, 218 Princess Street, Kingston ON

Tuesday, September 27

$25 (+$3 city fees and HST) until September 20

$30 (+$3.00 city fees and HST) from September 21 until showtime

The only Canadian date on her fall tour to promote the release of her new CD, Steady Love, an hommage to her beloved New Orleans.

Perhaps best known for her early 1970s Top 40 hit, ‘Midnight At The Oasis’, Maria has been doing what she loves best ever since – singing the blues, gospel, roots and rock, with a voice that will growl at you, seduce you, uplift you and just plain make you feel good.

She’s worked with every name in the pantheon of rock & folk since the Age of Aquarius began back in the ‘60s. On September 27, Maria will bring her five decades of making music to the Grand Theatre, on the day that her new CD is released by Stony Plain Records in Edmonton.

http://www.mariamuldaur.com/

Rick Fines is an award-winning veteran of the folk and blues circuits in North America. His song ‘Riley Wants His Life Back’ won first place in the blues category of 2003 International Songwriting Competition, with B.B. King one of the judges! But he’s been a Canadian institution since the late ‘80s when he played with Peterborough-based blues band, Jackson Delta. A master bottleneck & finger-style guitar hero, Rick has played with everybody from John Lee Hooker to Pinetop Perkins, not to mention his long-standing (and smile-inducing) music magicking with Suzie Vinnick.

FROM E CHORD TO ENCORE….

Alcorn Music, 953 Gladstone Avenue

Time: Wednesdays 7:30 - 9:00 pm
Dates: 8 weeks – October 4 to November 22

Two Courses in One!

PERFORM IT….

We will teach you how to bring your songs to life! This course is designed to take a song from your lessons or from the page and turn it into a full performance piece. We will teach you vocal and guitar technique as well as stage antics, talking on stage, how to get the nerves out and really enjoy the performance aspect of music. The students will also learn about singing harmonies along with the other artist in the course. The new studios at Alcorn Music allow us to work on the performance aspect of music with open mic/coffee house performances after 3 weeks of classes.

WRITE IT….

This course is designed to teach you all the means necessary to write your own music. It will study other famous writers and analyze their composition methods in order to apply them in our own writing classes. We will touch on finding the right key for you, how to choose chords, song structure and how to write catchy melodies leaving the audience singing along and begging for more. This class will work on the writing aspect as well as how to get your songs ready for stage and for recording.

By the end of this course, each student will have had the chance to perform one of their favourite songs and one of their own brand new pieces, and that's really bringing it from E chord to Encore!

Instructors: Musicians/music educators/songwriters and performance pros from Bluestone Band: Angelina Hunter and Ben Russell.
Cost: $ $275 (non-refundable)

SPECIAL EVENTS COMING SOON

******************************************************

Rick Taylor and Steve Marriner

Irene’s Pub, 885 Bank Street

Wednesday, October 5

Rick Taylor made his first major appearance as a singer, songwriter and guitarist at the famed Mariposa Folk Festival in 1971 and went on to become a regular at many Canadian festivals and clubs. Blues, jazz, country, rock, roots, world, and contemporary music all influenced Rick's early years on the club and festival circuits.

After living 23 years in Vancouver where he performed, recorded and produced, Rick relocated to his home province of Ontario in 2007. In February 2010 he returned to his blues roots with his definitive CD release of “Lucky Room”. This solo collection of 11 songs covers the road from Mississippi to Chicago, paying homage to the blues masters from the late 1920s to the early 1950s that have helped shape Rick’s music over a 40 plus year career.

http://www.ricktaylormusic.com

Steve Marriner needs no introduction to Ottawa area blues fans. An intensely energetic and powerful performer, whether solo on almost every instrument, or as part of the Blues Music Award winning MonkeyJunk, Steve never disappoints.

Mike and Stevie Myers met UK's Mark Cole (Sons of the Delta, Maxwell Street Blues Band) back in 2005 at the infamous crossroads in Clarksdale Mississippi. The Ottawa brothers/blues musicians immediately felt a 'deep blues' connection with the British singer, harp & slide player. Since their chance meeting at the crossroads, Stevie and Mike, along with Mark have toured the Mississippi delta juke joints and clubs, most recently this past April where the Myers Brothers Band and Mark's band Sons of the Delta performed at the Juke Joint Festival - 100th anniversary Robert Johnson edition. While in Canada, Mark and the Myers Brothers Band will complete a studio CD recorded at MMOB & Pine Woods Studios. Come on out Sunday night and give Mark a big Ottawa welcome at the Rainbow!

Chris Antonik

Rainbow, 76 Murray Street

Saturday, October 22 @ 10 pm

The debut solo album from Toronto guitarist Chris Antonik is a diverse, soulful and tightly executed blend of classic guitar blues and original, innovative, contemporary blues-rock. After thrilling audiences in Toronto blues clubs as a sideman, Antonik has stepped out on his own to deliver this self-produced collection of original material and two classic blues covers.

The album “Chris Antonik” is a portrait of a maturing blues guitarist and songwriter who fully grasps the importance of song over solo - while still leaving plenty for guitar fans to enjoy. The songs deal with repairing relationships and giving back to those around you, as well as classic blues themes delivered in modern vehicles. Using the guitarist–as–front man approach and a variety of guest vocalists, the record is a solid collection of soulful, strong and smart blues.

Chris and his band make their Ottawa debut at the Rainbow, Saturday, October 22. This is a ‘don’t miss’ show!

Matt Andersen

With Old Man Luedecke

Centrepointe Theatre, 101 Centrepointe Drive

Friday, October 28 @ 8 pm; tickets $42

Matt’s newest album, “Coal Mining Blues”, was produced by Colin Linden (who co-wrote and plays on several tunes) and recorded at Levon Helm Studios in Woodstock, New York. Featuring the Band keyboardist Garth Hudson and Olabelle singer Amy Helm, it’s a rich vein of new songs, many addressing the trying lives of working people: There’s the self-explanatory “Work Hard for the Luxury,” and the moving title track, which rings true in mining communities from Cape Breton to Sheffield and West Virginia. But not all of “Coal Mining Blues” is about hard work, as rollicking up-tempo cuts like ‘Lay it on the Line’ and ‘Fired Up’ bear out.

http://www.stubbyfingers.ca/

On September 20 Matt sets off on the sort of tour that would kill a lesser man. He’ll be in Ottawa at the end of October. And quick note — some dates have already sold out, and tickets are going fast.

Check out his new video at http://www.eastcoastkitchenparty.net/Music_Matt_Anderson.php

Old Man Luedecke is one of Canada’s best loved and most intriguing roots singer-songwriters. His memorable melodies, poetic sense and easy charisma appeal to anyone searching for new growth from old roots … his contemporary lyrics coupled with the irresistible rhythm of the old time banjo that connect and make him so loved with his audiences.

CBC RADIO CONCERTS ON DEMAND

*******************************************************

Monday, September 26
concert 1: Dan Mangan
recorded in CBC Vancouver's Studio 40
Dan Mangan has a new album to share with the world: Oh Fortune. In a world teeming with music, Dan's new record stands out from the crowd. The Vancouver musician has new songs to share which he says are deeper and darker than any he's written before. Just ten days before the album's release (on September 27), Dan brought 11 musicians along with him to CBC Vancouver's Studio 40. They recreated the album in its entirety, live in concert - track by track. It was magic.

Wednesday, September 28
concert 1: Laura Merrimen
recorded at CBC Radio Studio H in Halifax, January 20, 2011
Laura Merrimen is an old soul who wears her Americana drenched heart on her sleeve. Keeping true to her roots, she infuses a blend of rock and roll know-how with an old-timey country sound and pairs it with catchy melodies and smoky, sometimes haunting, bluesy vocals. Some have compared Merrimen to a female Bob Dylan, others to Lucinda Williams and Neko Case, but the sound is uniquely her own. She is a prolific writer who delivers soulful, thought provoking lyrics that are steeped in honesty and raw emotion. Her debut album, Love Letters for Lonely Hunters, earned her the 2010 Music Nova Scotia award for Country / Bluegrass Artist of the Year.

concert 2: Jason Collett recorded at The Haven Social Club in Edmonton
The lyrics of a Jason Collett song, without music, would read like literature or poetry. Stories, analogies, metaphors, clichés redefined and re-purposed, these are the tools of a great writer, regardless of the genre. If Collett were not a songwriter he would be a watch-maker. His detail and precision are that intrinsic to the work he does. The Haven Social Club in Edmonton is a listening room. Its patrons arrive intent on experiencing a performance and creating a relationship with a performer. If you have never seen or heard of Jason Collett, a solo performance is akin to going on a first date. You will discover little pieces of the man, and leave wanting to know the whole person.

Thursday, September 29

AND CBC Radio 1 broadcast, Friday, September 30 on CBC Radio 1
concert 1: Jill Barber
recorded at CBC Vancouver Studio 40
In this CD preview concert for her most recent album, Mischievous Moon, Jill Barber not only captures the whimsical moods of moonlight, but also explores what's hidden in the shadows it casts. A confident Canadian chanteuse, Jill Barber shatters the myth "they don't write songs like they used to" with her new undeniably cool, and entertaining original tunes. This night, along with her "men in black" band, she wowed the sold out and enthusiastic audience in CBC Vancouver's Studio 40.

Dan Mangan
recorded in CBC Vancouver's Studio 40
Dan Mangan has a new album to share with the world: Oh Fortune. In a world teeming with music, Dan's new record stands out from the crowd. The Vancouver musician has new songs to share which he says are deeper and darker than any he's written before. Just ten days before the album's release (on September 27), Dan brought 11 musicians along with him to CBC Vancouver's Studio 40. They recreated the album in its entirety, live in concert - track by track. It was magic.

Lots of blues available in the concerts on demand section of the CBC Website …
