SPECIAL EVENTS THIS WEEK

******************************************************

Bluestone

with special guest Ross Neilsen

Tucson's, 2440 Bank Street

Friday, July 22

Fronted by brother and sister Angie Hunter and Ben Russell on guitars & vocals, Bluestone gives the audience a diverse mix of sound, stemming from a variety of blues influences. Rounding out the band are Sandy Hunter on drums & vocals and Jean Pierre (JP) Amyotte on bass & vocals. Local bluesfans will remember Bluestone’s killer show in the finals of last year’s OBS Road to Memphis local blues challenge, and Angie & Ben recently participated in this spring’s OBS R2M Solo/Duo competition, where they reached back to their roots to play some good old soul-driven acoustic blues. Bluestone’s recent video is getting rave reviews. Come out and see what all the buzz is about!

www.bluestoneband.ca

To say that Ross Neilsen is a dedicated, chronic over achiever would be an understatement. Recently, he has been honoured with a nomination for Best New Artist at The Maple Blues Awards, two Rising Star nominations from CBC and back-to-back Blues Album of the Year nominations from the East Coast Music Association. A true road warrior in every sense, Ross Neilsen has spent much of the last two years living out of his van. Two albums in six months, over 200 four-hour shows a year, and a logbook of over 80,000 km covering three national tours.

Whether telling tall tales or capturing the spirit of the blues through his own originals and unique covers in his intimate solo shows or combining clever lyrics with old school, in-your-face guitar playing with his band, he will take you on an emotional journey through the joys and pains of life, death, triumph and defeat … he will touch your heart, soul, body and mind, sending you home to sing yourself to sleep. And in the morning? You will want more, much more.

24th Street Wailers

Rainbow, 76 Murray Street

Saturday, July 23

Meet The 24th Street Wailers. Out of their house and into yours. Twenty-two on 24. That’s the address. Five bedrooms. Floors slightly slanted and most of the members of the band paying less than $300 a month each. Oh, and a dog named after Ella Fitzgerald.

Don’t call the Wailers a blues band — they’re more than that: High-energy, good times, deep soul funk and lots of drive and — most of them — live in the music-filled house in a suburb of Toronto called Etobicoke (a name that most people can’t pronounce — try “Eat-owe-be-coe”).

Driven by Lindsay (Linz) Beaver, lead singer and powerhouse drummer, the band is two years into a career that’s seen them play most of the joints in Toronto. If you know the town, you’ll know the list: Grossman’s, the Silver Dollar, the Rex, the Blue Goose in Mimico, Hugh’s Room and assorted pubs and bars. Then there have been other, more prestigious venues: The South Side Shuffle, The Barrie Jazz and Blues Festival, The Orangeville Jazz and Blues Festival, and the Toronto Blues Society’s 25th anniversary party.

The Wailers rehearse in the house on 24th Street; they hang, they eat, they drink, and get silly within its walls. While three of the band members — Linz, bassist Mike Archer, sax player Jonathon Wong — live there, Only guitarist Emily Burgess commutes to the house, from her home 15 minutes away (or from her boyfriend’s, who’s a block away). Another resident at 24th street is Siobhan Martin, a keyboard player who sits in with the band from time to time.

They’re all out of Humber College — a music school that was hardly sympathetic to a blues band. Academically, everyone reads music, they know music theory better than most of their peers, and they know the intricacies of jazz and classical music — and prefer to play with the emotional depth of the “basic” blues.

Just how good was the band becoming? They were crowned 2010 winners of the Toronto Blues Society’s annual New Talent Search — which earned them a recording session at Phase One, one of the best recording studios in Toronto. A year before, the band had made a five-song EP — now a collectors’ item, since every one of the 160 copies have been sold — but they prefer to forget about it. Now the band has had the opportunity to make a much better, much more representative recording.

And so they did. “Dirty Little Young’uns” was recorded live off the floor in two ten-hour sessions; with Lindsay Beaver’s powerhouse drumming and on-the-money vocals, strong guitar work from Emily Burgess, and Mike Archer’s bottom-solid bass playing, the band rocks while Jonathan Wong’s gutsy sax playing meshes perfectly with the classic Hammond B3 and piano performance provided by special guest Lance Anderson.

It’s a roaring, hilarious, power-packed, 13-track outing comprised of original material from each member — and one that begins with a raunchy shuffle in “Dirty Little Young’uns” and ends with an acoustic song, “Turn To You,” that provides an emotional ending to a special, house-wrecking record. Tough though the record is, the dirty little young ‘uns from 24th street are even more fluid and funky at their live shows.

Now they’re out of their house, and about to come into yours. With this recording as a calling card — and a souvenir at their live gigs — the 24th Street Wailers are ready, set for a long career, and they’re gonna make you wanna dance.

CBC RADIO CONCERTS ON DEMAND

*******************************************************

7 pm on Radio Two...

Monday, July 18
concert 1: Ray Bonneville
, recorded at the 2010 Edmonton Folk Music Festival
If the term 'one man band' conjures up images of a clown with a bass drum on his back and cymbals between his knees, you need only to relish in the roots-music ensemble that is Ray Bonneville to give you a whole new appreciation. The music he creates is full of rich imagery, swampy New Orleans grooves, and an infectious rhythm that mimics a self-assured swagger on a Beale Street Saturday night. Seems like a natural progression for this immensely talented Montreal native who traveled North America, spent time at the mouth of the Mississippi, and finally settled in the nurturing roots music hotbed of Austin, Texas.

Wednesday, July 20
concert 1: Leif Vollebekk
, recorded at The Segal Centre for Performing Arts in Montreal as part of the Routes_Montreal series
Ottawa-born Leif Vollebekk studied philosophy in Reykjavik, Iceland but decided on a music career in Canada. Vollebekk's first CD, Inland, released in 2010, not only revealed a tremendously gifted songwriter but also someone with a unique voice. Apart from performing, Vollebekk is also a keen record collector. Hundreds of CD's and LPs adorn his Montreal Plateau apartment. The collection is eclectic and acknowledges songwriting heroes like Bob Dylan, Ray Charles, Miles Davis, and The Beach Boys. It gives you an idea of the sound palettes that Vollebekk is attracted to - sustained guitar chords, long bowed bass lines and chordal flourishes on a sweeping pedal steel guitar. His Icelandic heritage is also very important in his songwriting; Vollebekk connects with the contemporary Icelandic band Sigur Ros whose sound textures can be felt in new songs like Takk Someleidis and the popular Don't Go to Klaksvik. Joining him on stage at this Routes_Montreal taping are Phil Melanson on drums, Hans Bernhard on bass and Joe Grass on the pedal steel guitar.

Friday, July 22
concert 1: Shakura S'Aida
, recorded on at Revival in Toronto
Shakura S'Aida was born in Brooklyn, New York and raised in Switzerland before moving to Canada. For the past 20 years, Shakura has been a part of the Canadian music scene, performing to the jazz, blues and R&B communities. Last year, Shakura released her latest CD called "Brown Sugar". Almost all of the songs on the disc were written by Shakura and Donna Grantis, the electrifying guitarist who performs alongside Shakura in this recording, which took place at Revival in Toronto.

Canada Live podcast, released on Fridays

concert 1: Ray Bonneville
, recorded at the 2010 Edmonton Folk Music Festival

Lots of blues available in the concerts on demand section of the CBC Website …
