SPECIAL EVENTS THIS WEEK

*****************************************************

Andrea Ramolo

Irene’s Pub, 885 Bank Street

Tuesday, June 28

Andrea Ramolo and her one-man band Jason Skiendziel will cross the country for the 4th time in two years, bringing her brand new FACTOR supported release "The Shadows... and the Cracks" and her soulful live duo show to Kaffé 1870 in Wakefield.

The album demonstrates a sensitivity and strength, with honest tales of love, longing, sorrow, and human relationships – many of them inspired by “the ride.” Andrea’s gritty voice — softened occasionally by the vulnerability that comes from road-weariness and the distance from friends and family — is both unique and memorable; some of the best session players in Canada provide powerful support.

Musically, she’s been described as the antidote to too much Joni Mitchell, a tougher Dolly Parton a sexier Janis Joplin, but she has a soulful and sultry sound that’s all her own. There is an intimacy in her music that is both candid and unapologetic. Her beautifully woven narratives and raw delivery pull you in, force you to smile, break your heart, and mend it all over again. She’s a born performer and has been described as fearless, emotional, and confident. And you may even catch her tap dancing at one of her live shows.

Her ‘one-man band’, Jason Skiendziel, has been a major part of the ride as accompanist, companion and alternate driver; he plays bass, mandolin and several other instruments as well.

Jordan John & the Blues Angels

Greenfield’s Pub, 900 Greenbank Road

Thursday, June 30 @ 6:30 pm

To say that Jordan John is a more powerful and polished singer/multi-instrumentalist than many players twice his age would tell just a fraction of the story. He has already compiled a longer list of credits, and displays more assuredness and maturity, than many performers twice his age. Adept on guitar, drums, keyboards and bass, he¹s shared stages with Jeff Healey, Prince, the Guess Who, Wide Mouth Mason, Lucky Peterson, Canada's Premier Rhythm 'n Blues band The Lincolns; just some idea of the respect his drive and groove can command immediately. At only age 25, this musical dynamo is ready to take the world by storm with his own brand of soul stirring, groove infected, power driven music...... the sound that is none other than Jordan John!

The Brian Downey Big Band

Baldachin Inn, Merrickville ON

Saturday, July 2; 8 pm – midnight; $20 advance (from Brian),$25 at the door

Swing Music of the ‘40s … dance the night away to Big Band Swing!

Brian Downey is old school, old soul and rare groove, learned on the road, living in Detroit and Chicago of the ‘60s and ‘70s. As a young man, the story goes, he started drumming in his first band because the only drummer in town took off. But he had been listening to blues radio stations from the south ever since he discovered the “on” switch. In those 50 years, he never stopped learning from the greats and understated in music whom he worships for their musicality, rhythm, integrity and ease on stage to this day.

A seasoned, yet evolving, performer over decades, his pocket ties bands together from stage to stage. This great, grand drummer makes the good feel better and the lost feel found – audiences all over North-America and musicians from all over the world love him for that.

David Gogo

Rainbow Bistro, 76 Murray Street

Saturday, July 9

and

Friday, July 15

Gogo is touring this summer to promote his new CD, “Soul Bender”. The album features outstanding new tracks – some original and some unexpected covers – that showcase Gogo's best guitar and vocal performances ever! Those who have already heard it, all say, "it's a hit!"

The original works reflect recent changes in Gogo's life, everyone's life, as only the blues can. The covers run the gamut of sources and styles including those from Procol Harum, Elmore James and even Michael Jackson.

There are some interesting new aspects to this album's arrangements and voicing. For the first time ever, this recording includes strings! Back for more "oomph" is Rick Hopkins with his keyboard antics. As with previous albums “Soul Bender” includes horns and strong vocal backups from a variety of singers.

Monkey Junk's Steve Marriner adds some harp, soul and wonderful piano. Back for more Gogo punishment are blues stalwarts (and good music generally) Pat Steward - drums, Doug Elliott - bass, both from The Odds, Billy Hicks - drums, and Jay Stevens - bass. Having Charlie Quintana on drums on two tracks adds a new twist.

“Soul Bender” is available now from the Cordova Bay e-store , in retail stores across Canada and on Maple Music and iTunes.

Ottawa Blues Society members, watch your email box for a members-only ticket & CD promotion.

Delta Moon

Rainbow, 76 Murray Street

Monday, July 11

Red Parlor recording artist Delta Moon , 2011 first round Grammy nominee for Best Contemporary Blues Album , will be appearing LIVE at The Rainbow Bistro, Monday July 11, as part of their “Hellbound Train” CD release tour.

Tom Gray, Delta Moon’s founding member, was named the American Roots Music Association Blues Songwriter of the Year in 2008

Originally from Arlington, Virginia, Tom Gray has written songs recorded by Cyndi Lauper (“Money Changes Everything”), Carlene Carter, Manfred Mann, and many other artists. In the late 1980s Tom picked up a lap steel guitar and could not put it down. Soon it became his main instrument.

The dual slide guitars of Atlanta based Delta Moon carry the listener deep into the heart of the American South, where sinuous Mississippi blues meets the gritty backwoods twang of Appalachia and winds around a rock-steady beat like kudzu on a barbwire fence.

Delta Moon was formed with the idea of weaving the two slide guitars into one big sound, in the tradition of great two-guitar bands like the Rolling Stones, the Allman Brothers, and early Fleetwood Mac.

John Primer

with Geneva Red

Wilno Tavern, Wilno ON

Friday, July 15 @ 8 pm

and

Tweedsmuir Tavern, Tweed ON

Saturday, July 16 @ 8 pm

Grammy nominated Chicago blues man John Primer is "The Real Deal", a true Blues Journeyman. The moniker is taken from the recording that was released in 1995 which marked the beginning of his solo career. Originally from Camden, Mississippi, Primer has made Chicago his home since 1963, starting his career as part of the house band at the famous Theresa’s Lounge on the south side. It wasn’t long before this outstanding guitarist/vocalist was recruited to work in the bands of blues legends, Willie Dixon, Muddy Waters and Magic Slim. Now with numerous recordings under his belt John Primer and his band tour in support of his 2009 indie release "All Original" and the current "They Call Me John Primer" on Wolf Records. Geneva Red has a solo career of her own. She is a 6 foot tall red head equally as powerful on harp and vocals. The two together makes it like a double bill.

24th Street Wailers

The Dobro, Peterborough ON

Thursday, July 21

O'Reilly's Pub, Perth ON

Friday, July 22

Rainbow, 76 Murray Street

Saturday, July 23

Meet The 24th Street Wailers. Out of their house and into yours. Twenty-two on 24. That’s the address. Five bedrooms. Floors slightly slanted and most of the members of the band paying less than $300 a month each. Oh, and a dog named after Ella Fitzgerald.

Don’t call the Wailers a blues band — they’re more than that: High-energy, good times, deep soul funk and lots of drive and — most of them — live in the music-filled house in a suburb of Toronto called Etobicoke (a name that most people can’t pronounce — try “Eat-owe-be-coe”).

Driven by Lindsay (Linz) Beaver, lead singer and powerhouse drummer, the band is two years into a career that’s seen them play most of the joints in Toronto. If you know the town, you’ll know the list: Grossman’s, the Silver Dollar, the Rex, the Blue Goose in Mimico, Hugh’s Room and assorted pubs and bars. Then there have been other, more prestigious venues: The South Side Shuffle, The Barrie Jazz and Blues Festival, The Orangeville Jazz and Blues Festival, and the Toronto Blues Society’s 25th anniversary party.

The Wailers rehearse in the house on 24th Street; they hang, they eat, they drink, and get silly within its walls. While three of the band members — Linz, bassist Mike Archer, sax player Jonathon Wong — live there, Only guitarist Emily Burgess commutes to the house, from her home 15 minutes away (or from her boyfriend’s, who’s a block away). Another resident at 24th street is Siobhan Martin, a keyboard player who sits in with the band from time to time.

They’re all out of Humber College — a music school that was hardly sympathetic to a blues band. Academically, everyone reads music, they know music theory better than most of their peers, and they know the intricacies of jazz and classical music — and prefer to play with the emotional depth of the “basic” blues.

Just how good was the band becoming? They were crowned 2010 winners of the Toronto Blues Society’s annual New Talent Search — which earned them a recording session at Phase One, one of the best recording studios in Toronto. A year before, the band had made a five-song EP — now a collectors’ item, since every one of the 160 copies have been sold — but they prefer to forget about it. Now the band has had the opportunity to make a much better, much more representative recording.

And so they did. “Dirty Little Young’uns” was recorded live off the floor in two ten-hour sessions; with Lindsay Beaver’s powerhouse drumming and on-the-money vocals, strong guitar work from Emily Burgess, and Mike Archer’s bottom-solid bass playing, the band rocks while Jonathan Wong’s gutsy sax playing meshes perfectly with the classic Hammond B3 and piano performance provided by special guest Lance Anderson.

It’s a roaring, hilarious, power-packed, 13-track outing comprised of original material from each member — and one that begins with a raunchy shuffle in “Dirty Little Young’uns” and ends with an acoustic song, “Turn To You,” that provides an emotional ending to a special, house-wrecking record. Tough though the record is, the dirty little young ‘uns from 24th street are even more fluid and funky at their live shows.

Now they’re out of their house, and about to come into yours. With this recording as a calling card — and a souvenir at their live gigs — the 24th Street Wailers are ready, set for a long career, and they’re gonna make you wanna dance.

CBC RADIO CONCERTS ON DEMAND

*******************************************************

7pm on Radio Two...

Monday, June 27
concert 1: Mississippi Sheiks Tribute Project
, recorded at the 2010 Edmonton Folk Music Festival
From the late 1920's to 1935, the Mississippi Sheiks were the most popular and influential string bands in America. The group authored many country blues songs that have become standards today. Vancouver multi-instrumentalist Steve Dawson produced a star-studded tribute album to the Sheiks called “Things About Comin' My Way”. The project was so popular, it has spawned a touring group and DVD, and the CD is nominated for Recording of the Year at the 2011 Maple Blues Awards. The concert at Edmonton's Folk Festival included Dawson's crack rhythm section and legendary guests Van Dyke Parks, Geoff Muldaur and John Hammond.

Tuesday, June 28

concert 1: The Sheepdogs, recorded at Louis Pub on the University of Saskatchewan campus, Saskatoon Dubbed ‘Saskatoon's Freedom Rockers’ by CBC Radio 3 host Grant Lawrence, The Sheepdogs unabashedly take inspiration from the southern rock of the 1970s. With their shaggy locks and scruffy beards these four guys create music that manages to be fresh and contemporary while remaining faithful to its old style roots. And what better motto for a 70s inspired band than "Get It On!"? They most certainly do. With Ewan Currie's powerful lead vocals, tight harmonies from the rest of the band, and great ensemble playing, it's not surprising The Sheepdogs are one of the two finalists competing in Rolling Stone magazine's "So You Wanna Be a Rock & Roll Star" contest. Their retro outfits – complete with leather vests and headbands – don’t hurt either. This concert was part of 'On a Cold Road', a showcase of some of Saskatoon's best and brightest bands, and a co-presentation between CBC Radio and SaskMusic.

concert 1: Jim Byrnes, recorded at the Rogue Folk Club in Vancouver
Hot off European and Western Canadian tours, Jim Byrnes was in fine form for this CD release show in his hometown of Vancouver. Vancouver loves its blues and the hometown audience on this night showed their love for their favorite bluesman, Jim Byrnes. On "Everywhere West," his fourth CD on Black Hen Records, Jim digs deeper into a dirtier, grittier blues than on any previous recording. He covers songs by Jimmy Reed and Lowell Fulsom, two lifelong favorites. And he channels the roots of gospel through the music of bluesman and preacher, Rev. Thomas A. Dorsey. As ever, Jim wraps the music in stories from the well traveled but endlessly fascinating blues highway. “Everywhere West” won Blues Album of the Year at the 2011 Juno Awards.

Wednesday, June 29

concert 1: Kermit Ruffins and the BBQ Swingers, recorded at the 2010 Harvest Jazz and Blues Festival in Fredericton, NB
Kermit Ruffins represents the best of the new generation of musicians from New Orleans. He plays with an authentic nod to the past but is still very much a contemporary artist. He plays the trumpet and as a group leader, he carries on the musical traditions set by Louis Armstrong. When he was still in high school, he co-founded the Re-birth Brass Band, and then went on to form his own group: the BBQ Swingers. He last played the Harvest Jazz and Blues Festival in Fredericton, New Brunswick in 2001 -- the weekend just after 9-11. He arrived in the city with almost nothing but his instruments and the city took him in. This concert in 2010 was his first visit since then and he was in a celebratory mood. He was ready for a Saturday night party, and that's what he gave the packed tent as he drew on a diverse repertoire of tunes. It's rollicking, lively, and ultimately moving New Orleans jazz.

Thursday, June 30
concert 1
: Bruce Cockburn, recorded at the Eric Harvey Theatre at the Banff Centre in Banff, AB

And on the subject of numbers, Bruce Cockburn is the recipient of 13 Juno awards, the Order of Canada, a Governor General's Performing Arts award, and 7 honorary doctorates. We recorded him in Banff on tour with two of his collaborators from the new album: violinist Jenny Scheinman and percussionist Gary Craig. They add a fresh sound to some of Bruce Cockburn's most enduring hits.

Canada Live podcast, released on Fridays
Friday, July 1 on the Canada Live podcast
concert 1: Harry Manx and David Lindley
, recorded at the Vogue Theatre in Vancouver
Harry Manx is called an ‘essential link’ between the music of East and West, creating musical short stories that cross the traditions of the blues with the depth of classical Indian ragas, and beyond. It's
hard to resist, easy to digest and deliciously addictive to listen to. David Lindley has been smashing musical barriers and fusing idioms from his earliest days. Probably best known for his solo on Jackson Browne's ‘Runnin' on Empty’, Lindley has cut a singular and eccentric path through more than three decades playing music as a coveted sideman and a world class performer in his own right. Together, they create an incredibly full sound for just two guys. Harry Manx and David Lindley joined forces at Vancouver's Vogue Theatre on a rainy night in April; the audience was so mesmerized and enchanted by their performance that you could have heard a pin drop.

Lots of blues available in the concerts on demand section of the CBC Website …

From Roots Music Canada:

This is Woodshed Session #25, and fittingly, we recorded this one in front of a live web audience.

But Suzie Vinnick could dazzle the dead!

http://www.rootsmusic.ca/2011/06/11/suzie-vinnick-brings-mabel-to-the-woodshed/

Great new material from “Me & Mabel”, and all the warmth and wizardry we've come to know and love from Suzie.

A perfect way to mark a number we're rather pleased about.

Proudly,

Gordy the Moose
