Bill Bourne & String Bone

Westboro House Concerts

Saturday, May 21 @ 8 pm; $20

To reserve, email westborohouseconcerts@gmail.com

A multiple Canadian Juno Award winner, Bill has received international acclaim for his recordings and live performances. A mainstay on the international roots scene, life on the road is reflected in Bill's music – powerful rhythms and soulful songs, steeped in World Beat, Blues, Cajun, Celtic, Folk, Flamenco, Funk, Poetry and more.

His latest release, “Bluesland” is an intense collection of rock, folk and country, soaked with an electric blues sound that gets deep into your pores. Recorded 'live off the floor' in 3 days in April 2010 at Beta Sound Recorders in Edmonton, and marks a milestone in Bourne's career, collaborating with his son Pat Bourne, who plays electric lead guitar, and his daughter Emily Bourne, who painted some of the original artwork for the album. In addition to Bill's acoustic guitar and vocals, and his son's lead, The Free Radio Band features Pa Joe on electric smooth jazz guitar (African Guitar Summit), Moses Gregg on bass (The Swiftys) and Miguel Ferrer on drums (Santiago, Chile).

http://www.billbourne.com/

Americana best describes the music of String Bone, a project born of the songwriting talents of Stratford resident Barry James Payne. A mix of all of the North American roots music that has been so prominent since the turn of the century (last century that is) ... Payne is a seasoned writer and story teller. He paints portraits with his words, and the various musicians involved help Payne change the colour of his pallet from emotional folk and country ballads to uptempo country-rock and bluesy, smoky, jazzy grooves.

You'll hear from the Americana-infused country songs of Laura Merrimen to the old time honky-tonk and tear stained whiskey ballads of the Haunted Hearts. Also on the bill is Molly Thomason, a soul-pop rocker who just turned 16, and Andy Brown, a contemporary folk rocker with a great boyish charm and a style all his own.

We've said before that Rita Chiarelli's new film, Music From the Big House, is brilliant: a glimpse behind prison walls and inside the human heart.

Rita was just as compelling in conversation as she is on stage, or on the big screen. Her journey down Highway 61 to Angola Prison taught us more about the blues than we might have learned in a lifetime.

Music From The Big House – World Broadcast Premiere

From acclaimed director Bruce McDonald, teaming with an Emmy- and Oscar-nominated documentary producer, comes a rare and exclusive musical journey. Rita Chiarelli, an award-winning recording artist, has decided to take a pilgrimage to the birthplace of the blues--Louisiana State Maximum Security Penitentiary aka Angola Prison. She never imagined that her love of the blues would lead her to play with inmates serving life sentences for murder, rape and armed robbery.

In what was once the bloodiest prison in America, inmates relatives will be invited to listen alongside other prisoners, to hear remarkable voices singing stories of hope and redemption. Let yourself be swept away by one of Blues' most soulful pilgrim daughters who is finding out if music really is an escape.
