Prairie Scene will also offer a chance for 70 national and international presenters to discover the best of Prairie culture, creating new performance opportunities for Prairie artists across the country and around the world.

Prairie Scene will present a vast living portrait of the region – combining rural and urban, traditional and contemporary, shaking stereotypes and celebrating new voices. Don’t miss it!

Colin James Acoustic Duo

NAC Theatre, 53 Elgin Street
Wednesday, April 27, 7:30 pm
; tickets $39.00

Get up close and personal with Colin James as he brings his acoustic duo show to Prairie Scene. In a career spanning two decades, Colin (who was mentored by the legendary Stevie Ray Vaughan) has flourished into a multi-platinum artist many times over. His self-titled album debuted worldwide in 1989, garnering him two hit singles (‘Voodoo Thing’ and ‘Five Long Years’) as well as the first of many JUNO Awards. The emergence of The Little Big Band in the early 90s saw Colin’s career soar to new heights, and he remains one of the country’s most revered musicians.

2009 saw him release his 12th CD, “Rooftops and Satellites”, featuring rock radio hit ‘Man’s Gotta Be a Stone’. His greatest hits, “Take it From the Top”, released on March 15 with EMI, features bonus tracks recorded with legendary producer Bob Rock, bringing Colin full circle back to his original label. Today he captivates audiences everywhere with his seductive vocals and lush guitar playing in an exceptionally intimate acoustic duo with guest guitarist Chris Caddell.

Saskatchewan songstress sisters Jen and Megan Lane with noted guitarist John Antoniuk (aka Smokekiller) open the show.

From the wailin’ licks of Jack Semple’s blues to the clean, cool jazz of Greg Lowe, from Joël Fafard’s hot country/folk/roots playing to Bob Evans eclectic mix of finger-style guitar and traditional roots music – there is nothing these boys can’t play, and nothing they haven’t!

Wide Mouth Mason

The Sheepdogs

Mavericks, 221 Rideau Street

Saturday, April 30 @ 9 pm; $15

With a soulful and hard-hitting sound, Wide Mouth Mason is a band to be reckoned with. These guys pop the lid on convention with their aggressive fusion of blues, rock, jazz and pop. Best known for their funky chart-topping hit single “Change” and its catchy predecessor “Smile”, the multi-JUNO Award winning band from the Canadian heartland has a unique raw and sexy style. This powerful live show promises a few brand new tunes and hits from their extensive catalogue.

The Sheepdogs are an old-school rock and roll revival. With big guitars, stacked harmonies, vintage organ, well crafted tunes, and a dynamite live show, it’s easy to see why these guys were nominated for Artist of the Year on XM Radio’s The Verge.

SPECIAL EVENTS THIS WEEK

*****************************************************

Johnny Max

Irene’s, 885 Bank Street

Friday, April 29

FINALLY … it’s certainly been a long road, but now everyone in Ottawa gets a chance to enjoy a Johnny Max Band show!

Johnny is a soulful singer whose respect and passion for all types of music is evident. He is also a brilliant entertainer who has audiences thoroughly enjoying each show. Johnny Max has built up a solid reputation as one of those guys who gives 110% and is one of the most action-packed and satisfying entertainers around. Johnny takes to performing like a fish to water, a perpetual motion machine, galvanizing his spicy blend of Stax/Volt, Atlantic, Funk, and Blues into frenzied heights, often propelling himself into the audience’s eager arms.

To listen to Johnny Max tell it, and to watch Johnny Max present it, you understand very quickly that there’s more to creating great music than simply performing a first-rate piece of music well. It’s much more all encompassing than that.

Max’s take includes engaging the audience, making his show accessible. He wants to more than simply feed off the audience, he looks to make them part of the experience. And he does so with his good natured wit.

Using humour to get your point across is always risky because there’s a fine line between entertaining and being the comic. To his credit Johnny Max knows how to tread that line because the music always comes first.

Max’s music doesn’t always follow conventional Blues lines. Rather than be confined to the traditional 12 bar influenced forms, this veteran of the musical wars favours substance rather than convention.

While his first three releases firmly established Max in the Blues idiom, it was on his fourth, the Juno nominated “A Lesson I’ve Learned” that Johnny added to his Blues sensibilities, and found his groove. And that groove had more to do with Southern Soul than straight up Blues. Of note, check the title track whose chorus might have been lifted from the Dan Penn songbook.

Max’s new disc “It’s A Long Road” picks up where “Lesson” left off – with a wallop! Partnering with a brand new band, Johnny lays down a dozen tracks with a heavy dosage of Gumbo R&B, nods to Rock’em Sock’em Soul, and hints of all-out Boogie work-outs and Tom Waits styled tonalities. Along the way, Johnny relates his most deeply personal stories to date.

You would think that all of the above would be enough to keep anyone busy but Max also finds time to host a radio show: “Sunday Morning Soul” on The HAZE FM, www.thehazefm.ca, Canada’s only commercial web radio station Sunday mornings at 11AM and Wednesdays at 10PM, and co-program the CNE Bandshell BluesFest, (with Rico Ferrara), among other ventures.

It’s all in days work for Max. And he and his fans wouldn’t have it any other way.

Bill Bourne & String Bone

Westboro House Concerts

Saturday, May 21 @ 8 pm; $20

To reserve, email westborohouseconcerts@gmail.com

A multiple Canadian Juno Award winner, Bill has received international acclaim for his recordings and live performances. A mainstay on the international roots scene, life on the road is reflected in Bill's music – powerful rhythms and soulful songs, steeped in World Beat, Blues, Cajun, Celtic, Folk, Flamenco, Funk, Poetry and more.

His latest release, “Bluesland” is an intense collection of rock, folk and country, soaked with an electric blues sound that gets deep into your pores. Recorded 'live off the floor' in 3 days in April 2010 at Beta Sound Recorders in Edmonton, and marks a milestone in Bourne's career, collaborating with his son Pat Bourne, who plays electric lead guitar, and his daughter Emily Bourne, who painted some of the original artwork for the album. In addition to Bill's acoustic guitar and vocals, and his son's lead, The Free Radio Band features Pa Joe on electric smooth jazz guitar (African Guitar Summit), Moses Gregg on bass (The Swiftys) and Miguel Ferrer on drums (Santiago, Chile).

http://www.billbourne.com/

Americana best describes the music of String Bone, a project born of the songwriting talents of Stratford resident Barry James Payne. A mix of all of the North American roots music that has been so prominent since the turn of the century (last century that is) ... Payne is a seasoned writer and story teller. He paints portraits with his words, and the various musicians involved help Payne change the colour of his pallet from emotional folk and country ballads to uptempo country-rock and bluesy, smoky, jazzy grooves.

CBC RADIO CONCERTS ON DEMAND

*******************************************************

CBC Radio Two @ 7 pm

Monday, April 25
concert 1: Alex Cuba
, recorded at the home of Ed Henderson and Jean Teillet in Vancouver
A few years back when Ed Henderson and Jean Teillet completed a renovation on their early 20th century Craftsman-style home in the Vancouver neighbourhood of Mount Pleasant, they were rewarded with a new look and excellent acoustics. What a great bonus for a household that is so into music! Guitarist and singer Alex Cuba was invited to perform as part of a fun and lively kitchen concert called "Kitchen Scratch." He was joined by an amazing house band comprising four members of the Henderson family (Ed, Bill, Saffron, and Camille) with bassist Darren Parris and violinist Cam Wilson. The music was a mix of new and old songs from the musicians who happily squeezed around Ed and Jean's comfy kitchen table. The music, the company, and the resulting atmosphere created by these artists produced a wonderful concert that probably couldn't have happened anywhere else.

concert 2: Pavlo, Rik Emmett, Oscar Lopez, recorded at L'Astral in Montreal
Three master players collaborate to form an acoustic trio of passionate, fiery guitars. Pavlo, Rik Emmett and Oscar Lopez have each forged brilliant independent careers, garnering awards both at home and internationally and winning the hearts of their respective fans. Their CD Trifecta was nominated as the Instrumental Album of The Year at the 2010 Junos. This performance at the new Montreal venue L'Astral captures the warmth and humour of the guys on stage. There are many world influences in the music - Mediterranean, Gypsy swing and Latin - all performed with vitality and conviction. The music they make spans a gamut of emotions from tender, intimate melodies to hot solos - it's no wonder why they are making new fans right across Canada.

Wednesday, April 27
concert 1: Meaghan Smith and Erin Costelo
with Symphony Nova Scotia, recorded at the Rebecca Cohn Auditorium in Halifax
Meaghan Smith and Erin Costelo are rising east coast stars. From Erin's smoky, soulful ballads to Meaghan's playful takes on serious matters of the heart, the two of them completely enchanted the audience at the Rebecca Cohn Auditorium in Halifax. Meaghan is riding high after three recent East Coast Music Awards and one Juno win for New Artist of the Year, and Erin celebrated this concert with the first performance of a brand new CBC commission written, arranged and performed by Erin with Symphony Nova Scotia. They were backed up by the rich sounds of Symphony Nova Scotia conducted by Bernhard Gueller.
