SPECIAL EVENTS THIS WEEK

*****************************************************

Duke Robillard

Tucson’s, 2440 Bank Street

Wednesday, February 23 @ 8:30 pm

Sunday, February 27 @ 4 pm

Guitarist. Bandleader. Songwriter. Singer. Producer. Session musician. And a one-man cheering section for the blues, in all its forms and permutations.

In 2007 Duke received a Grammy nomination for his "Guitar Groove-a-rama" CD and was also honoured with the prestigious Rhode Island Pell Award for "excellence in the arts" along with actress Olympia Dukakis, actor Bob Colonna, and R.I. Choreographer/Festival Ballet director Mihailo "Misha" Djuric. The Pell award is named for Senator Claiborne Pell who helped to establish the National Endowment for the Arts and Humanities in 1965.

Roomful of Blues – which still continues, forty years later – gave Duke his first exposure to a wide public, and when he left after a dozen years, he played briefly with rockabilly king Robert Gordon, then cut two albums with the Legendary Blues Band (a sterling collection of former members of Muddy Waters' band). He led his own band until 1990, and then replaced Jimmy Vaughan in the Fabulous Thunderbirds.

Still on the road, he plays as many as 250 dates a year, still proving, night after night, that his true talent is bringing people out to hear the music, appreciate the show, and dance to the blues.

Harry Manx

NAC Theatre, 53 Elgin Street

Saturday, February 26; tickets starting at $27

"Mysticssippi" blues man Harry Manx has been called an "essential link" between the music of East and West, creating musical short stories that wed the tradition of the Blues with the depth of classical Indian ragas. He has created a unique sound that is hard to forget and deliciously addictive to listen to.

Manx is a prolific artist, releasing nine albums in an eight-year span with no signs of stopping. He has received seven Maple Blues Awards, five Juno nominations, the Canadian Folk Music Award in 2005 for Best Solo Artist and won CBC Radio’s "Great Canadian Blues Award" in 2007.

His latest CD, "Bread and Buddha", is another melange of blues, roots, world and folk sounds. Harry spent almost two years carefully preparing the songs and uses full instrumentation including piano, organ, drums, base, and scored strings. The CD is a poignant exploration of the ephemeral nature of the human experience

Blend Indian folk melodies with slide guitar blues; add a sprinkle of gospel and some compelling grooves and you’ll get a sound that goes down easy and leaves you hungry for more.

Dance, Dance, Dance to the music!
We are too early for Mardi Gras and too late for Valentines Day. So we are going to dedicate this evening to both – expect some love tunes and some music from New Orleans 2nd line parade. (The noun second line (n) is also the name of a "unique dance", performed to the beat of New Orleans' traditional Mardi Gras Music.) It drives me wild.

Rocket Rached & the Fat City 8

CD Release Party “Seven Years of Thursdays”

Elmdale House Tavern, 1084 Wellington Street

Saturday, March 12 @ 9:30 pm; $10

Rocket Rached & the Fat City 8 rocked a packed house for two nights back in February 2010 with a few friends on board for the ride at the Elmdale House Tavern. It was a great couple of night with some magical moments. The CD is ready and set for release.

Over the years, almost all of Ottawa’s blues luminaries have played with Fat City … Tony D, Trevor Finlay, Sue Foley and Steve Marriner, as well as players from Canada’s blues community, David Gogo and the late Jeff Healey to name a few. International stars on that list include Otis Grand and members of Roomful of Blues.

Rocket Rached & the Fat City 8 have played across the country and played the Ottawa Bluesfest for 8 years straight, as well as other festivals. They have also opened for Duke Robillard, Junior Wells, Roomful of Blues and the highlight was opening for Ray Charles.

The ‘rocket man’ Jed Rached is a passionate bluesman, a founder of the Ottawa Blues Society, as well as one of 2 hosts of “The Midweek Blues”, a weekly blues radio show on CHUO 89.1 fm for 21 years. His devotion to the music and its players is well known; many local musicians have benefited from his help and guidance.

The time has come to capture the high energy show! We want to invite everyone down to be part of this CD release party.

“He Said – She Said”

Peter Karp & Sue Foley

National Arts Centre Studio

Saturday, March 19 @ 8 pm; tickets $30

"He Said - She Said" is the new inspired show featuring a collaboration of original songs by Peter Karp and Sue Foley. The project is based around a correspondence the two shared through letters that were written over a year period. These letters started as a casual exchange between two committed performers sharing their common bond of the loneliness of the road, the pain of separation from family and home and above all, the drive to make music. But as time went on the letters they shared became more poignant, more revealing. Those letters became their songs.

The result is "He Said - She Said." The show features songs of two artists in development, sharing artistic purpose and spiritual kinship in a meeting of hearts and minds. Whether they're performing as an acoustic duo or with their electric band the music encompasses elements of folk, jazz, flamenco, and blues resulting in a show that is moving, literate, romantic, rocking and exciting.

Michael Pickett

The Standeasy - RCHA Club, 193 Ontario Street, Kingston ON

Saturday, March 12

Limited number of tickets available; call 613 384-8168 to reserve

Pickett's unique fusion of sensibilities, driven by his thumping delta guitar rhythms, muscular harmonica and gravel and chains voice is, at once, traditional and relevant. Never content to merely be a musical archivist, Pickett effectively deconstructs and reconstructs those seminal blues, born on the delta, to serve his own singular purpose; writing songs that are authentic both in substance and performance.

After 30 years, Michael Pickett is at a place in his career which he arrived at honestly. An acknowledged harmonica virtuoso, Pickett has led, and performed with, roots/blues bands clearly recognized for their significant contribution to a venerable musical art-form. But that was never enough for Michael. He has a voice. A voice that, without the adornment of a band, ought to be heard. Raw. Honest. And dripping with sly insights. Accompanied only by his guitar, rack harmonica and sensual expression, Michael Pickett is a performer who has stripped away the frills, to arrive at a place that belongs entirely to him.

CBC RADIO CONCERTS ON DEMAND

*******************************************************

Some bluesy selections from this week's Canada Live broadcasts at 7 pm nationwide on CBC Radio Two...

Friday, February 25
concert 1: Paul Pigat
, recorded in John Lawson Park, West Vancouver
With the skies thickened by forest fire smoke blowing down from the BC interior, Paul Pigat's Boxcar Campfire show took on an eerie yet strangely appropriate mood on the outdoor stage of the Harmony Arts Festival. Paul and his band ignited their bluesy, rocky, folksy, Americana groove for an audience ready to see one of the finest guitarists in the country. Check out the sound of Paul's cigar box guitar. Last year, Daddy Mojo (a Montreal based guitar company) gifted Paul with a very cool custom instrument. The guitar may have once packed a heap of stogies but now puts out the fattest guitar sound imaginable. Smokin!

concert 2: Slidin' Clyde Roulette Band, recorded at the West End Cultural Centre in Winnipeg, Manitoba
The Slidin' Clyde Roulette Band returns to Winnipeg for a homecoming concert. Clyde was born in Portage la Prairie, MB, but fell in love with blues and cut his musical teeth in Winnipeg. He now makes his home South of the border, on the famed Highway 61, just outside Memphis. Roulette's life revolves around the Blues and his Ojibway/Anishinabe roots have inspired songs such as "Redman" and "Young Man's Blues". In 2007, his album "Let's Take a Ride" won a Canadian Aboriginal Music Award for Best Blues Album. His band includes Mel Reimer on harmonica, Ken McMahon on Drums and Jeff Smook on bass.

Lots of blues available in the concerts on demand section of the CBC Website …
