Shrimp Daddy & the Sharpshooters

Rainbow, 76 Murray Street

Friday, February 11

Winner of this year’s Maple Blues Award for ‘New Artist or Group of the Year’, Michael “Shrimp Daddy” Reid is a journeyman harp player and front man who originally hails from Montreal. Michael moved to Toronto in 1999 and currently resides in Milton. In 2001 he heard Toronto blues harpist Ken Yoshioka at Toronto's St. Louis Bar and Grill and was instantly hooked. For his 2001 New Year’s resolution Michael promised himself to learn to play blues harp. Over the next two years he focused on learning his instrument, prior to focusing on developing his skills as a dynamic and highly entertaining front man. For a guy who took but a few lesson from harmonica legends Michael Pickett and Carlos del Junco, Michael rapidly developed into a driving force in vocalizing, interpreting and writing Chicago and West Coast jump and swing blues.
In 2009 Shrimp knew it was time to record his own material and sought out one of Canada’s finest young multi-award winning bluesmen, Steve Marriner of MonkeyJunk fame to produce it. The result was Shrimp Daddy’s seminal recording, “Messin’ With My System”. Inspired in equal measure by the sounds of Little Walter and William Clarke, “Messin’ With My System” is a must have for any blues aficionado’s library. Shrimp’s powerful baritone voice, rich harp tone and tasty phrasing will carry the listener through tunes filled with both irony and good humour.

Duke Robillard

Tucson’s, 2440 Bank Street

Wednesday, February 23 @ 8:30 pm

Sunday, February 27 @ 4 pm

Guitarist. Bandleader. Songwriter. Singer. Producer. Session musician. And a one-man cheering section for the blues, in all its forms and permutations.

In 2007 Duke received a Grammy nomination for his "Guitar Groove-a-rama" CD and was also honoured with the prestigious Rhode Island Pell Award for "excellence in the arts" along with actress Olympia Dukakis, actor Bob Colonna, and R.I. Choreographer/Festival Ballet director Mihailo "Misha" Djuric. The Pell award is named for Senator Claiborne Pell who helped to establish the National Endowment for the Arts and Humanities in 1965.

Roomful of Blues – which still continues, forty years later – gave Duke his first exposure to a wide public, and when he left after a dozen years, he played briefly with rockabilly king Robert Gordon, then cut two albums with the Legendary Blues Band (a sterling collection of former members of Muddy Waters' band). He led his own band until 1990, and then replaced Jimmy Vaughan in the Fabulous Thunderbirds.

Still on the road, he plays as many as 250 dates a year, still proving, night after night, that his true talent is bringing people out to hear the music, appreciate the show, and dance to the blues.

“He Said – She Said”

Peter Karp & Sue Foley

National Arts Centre Studio

Saturday, March 19 @ 8 pm; tickets $30

"He Said - She Said" is the new inspired show featuring a collaboration of original songs by Peter Karp and Sue Foley. The project is based around a correspondence the two shared through letters that were written over a year period. These letters started as a casual exchange between two committed performers sharing their common bond of the loneliness of the road, the pain of separation from family and home and above all, the drive to make music. But as time went on the letters they shared became more poignant, more revealing. Those letters became their songs.

The result is "He Said - She Said." The show features songs of two artists in development, sharing artistic purpose and spiritual kinship in a meeting of hearts and minds. Whether they're performing as an acoustic duo or with their electric band the music encompasses elements of folk, jazz, flamenco, and blues resulting in a show that is moving, literate, romantic, rocking and exciting.

Joe Bonamassa

Ottawa Civic Centre

Friday, April 1; $63.70-$86.30 + sc

Touring in support of his soon-to-be-released album “Dust Bowl”, his 11th full-length solo release and 9th studio album, Joe Bonamassa will be playing the Ottawa Civic Centre, one night only.

A child prodigy, Bonamassa opened shows at age 12 for blues legend B.B. King, who said after first seeing him play, “This kid's potential is unbelievable…He's one of a kind.” His recording career began in the early ’90s with Bloodline, a rock-blues group also featuring Robby Krieger’s son Waylon and Miles Davis’ son Erin. His solo debut was in 2000 with the Tom Dowd-produced “A New Day Yesterday”.

Bonamassa tours constantly and averages 200 shows every year, almost always playing to sold-out crowds and ever-larger houses, and with each gig, he comes more into his own as a virtuoso and a vocalist. As he heads back to the road in support of his new album, he remains infinitely passionate about playing live, connecting with his audiences and making new fans along the way.

Layla Zoe and her All-Star Band

Confederation Place Hotel

Saturday, February 12; doors 7 pm; show 8 pm

One of the best young female blues artists in the country, she has been compared to Janis Joplin and was recently up for the part in a Janis Joplin bio pick coming out in 2013. Layla has an incredible voice and she will be backed by an all star band including Drew Austin on drums and James Rasmussen on bass (both from David Rotundo’s band).

Layla has a phenomenal voice and a stage presence that will captivate you – she has quickly become the “darling of Canadian blues” and she has appeared with nearly every great blues musician in this country. In Europe, she is in huge demand and has taken that continent by storm; everyone who has seen raves about her performances. She has five independently released CDs (she has released one every year).

Michael Pickett

The Standeasy - RCHA Club, 193 Ontario Street, Kingston ON

Saturday, March 12

Limited number of tickets available; call 613 384-8168 to reserve

Pickett's unique fusion of sensibilities, driven by his thumping delta guitar rhythms, muscular harmonica and gravel and chains voice is, at once, traditional and relevant. Never content to merely be a musical archivist, Pickett effectively deconstructs and reconstructs those seminal blues, born on the delta, to serve his own singular purpose; writing songs that are authentic both in substance and performance.

After 30 years, Michael Pickett is at a place in his career which he arrived at honestly. An acknowledged harmonica virtuoso, Pickett has led, and performed with, roots/blues bands clearly recognized for their significant contribution to a venerable musical art-form. But that was never enough for Michael. He has a voice. A voice that, without the adornment of a band, ought to be heard. Raw. Honest. And dripping with sly insights. Accompanied only by his guitar, rack harmonica and sensual expression, Michael Pickett is a performer who has stripped away the frills, to arrive at a place that belongs entirely to him.

CBC RADIO CONCERTS ON DEMAND

*******************************************************

Selections from this week's Canada Live broadcasts at 7 pm nationwide on CBC Radio Two...

Tuesday, February 1
concert 1: John Prine
, recorded at the Edmonton Folk Music Festival
Elvis Costello calls him a living legend; Bob Dylan calls him one of his favourite songwriters. "His is just extra-ordinarily eloquent music," says Roger Waters of Pink Floyd. John Prine is an artist who can paint the most vivid picture with a few simple words. He seems to literally get under the skin of the characters in his songs, allowing the listener to experience life through someone else's eyes, regardless of their circumstance John Prine's concert was the closer for the 2010 Edmonton Folk Music Festival.

Thursday, February 3
concert 1: Martha Wainwright Sings Piaf
, recorded at The Festival Mondial Chorale in Laval Quebec
Martha Wainwright often admits that she's not one to play it safe, either in her song writing or in her performances. And although a daunting quest, the idea to tackle the 'oeuvre' of France's legendary femme fatale Edith Piaf seemed to spark her imagination. Wainwright's attachment to 'la chanson française' lifted what might have been a merely interesting vanity project to a deeply moving tribute filled with loving respect (the gravel-voiced Parisian is still revered by a fiercely devoted fan base, not just as a musician but as an emblem of French culture and a martyr to doomed love ). 'I remember the sensation - that complete abandon that her voice evokes," she says. "It was almost like a daydream of soaring. I would sing along at the top of my lungs and imagine myself on a giant swing in the middle of the living room." In this Canada Live recording during the Festival Mondial Chorale in Laval Quebec, Martha was joined by her New York based band and by a 40-member choir made up of members from La Boheme and Le Collège Vocal ensembles. The results were riveting.

Friday, February 4 on CBC Radio 1
concert 1: Martha Wainwright Sings Piaf
, recorded at The Festival Mondial Chorale in Laval Quebec
