14th ANNUAL MAPLE BLUES AWARDS

******************************************************

Canadian blues artists from coast-to-coast were well represented at the 14th Annual Maple Blues Awards gala in Toronto Monday evening as a sold-out crowd of blues lovers gathered to celebrate Canadian Blues at Koerner Hall.

Ottawa’s MonkeyJunk took the lead with three wins, including Electric Act of the Year, Harmonica Player of the Year (Steve Marriner) and Drummer of the Year (Matt Sobb). East Coast blues giant Matt Andersen walked away with two Maple Blues Awards for Entertainer of the Year and Acoustic Act of the Year. Another young East Coast bluesman, Garrett Mason, took home the Guitar Player of the Year award.

Hamilton’s Rita Chiarelli was presented the Blues With A Feeling Award (lifetime achievement) by Frederic Lamoureux from the Montreal Jazz Festival and the president of legendary blues label Alligator Records, Bruce Iglauer. Chiarelli, who has been dubbed the “goddess of Canadian blues”, received the award for her long and vibrant career as one of the premier female blues musicians in Canada. Following a moving tribute video Hamilton native, Richard Newell AKA King Biscuit Boy received a posthumous Lifetime Achievement Award for his outstanding contribution to the blues in Canada and internationally, accepted by his son Richard Oddie.

Other highlights include Female Vocalist of the Year for Toronto’s Shakura S’Aida, an internationally recognized singer whose performance earlier in the evening had the audience spellbound. The award was presented by popular CBC personality George Stromboulopoulis and MBA winner Matt Andersen, who also presented Recording of the Year to Toronto’s Downchild. Toronto’s Julian Fauth was presented the award for Keyboard Player of the Year by legendary blues keyboard player Curley Bridges and Dave Booth, AKA Daddy Cool, now back on the air waves at Whistle FM. Keith Picot, of the Vancouver based band The Twisters was presented with Bassist of the Year by Montreal blues singer Dawn Tyler Watson and Bill Wax, host of XM Radio’s popular program B.B. King’s Bluesville.

The Blues Booster of the Year award, a very special Maple Blues Award honouring outstanding contribution to the Canadian blues music industry was awarded to Gord MacAulay, Chair of the Saskatoon Blues Festival and a long time serving board member of the Saskatoon Blues Society.

The Maple Blues Awards gala featured outstanding performances from winners and nominees Jack de Keyzer, Tom Lavin, Matt Andersen, Shakura S’Aida and Dawn Tyler Watson, all backed by The Maple Blues Band.

Now in its 25th year, The Toronto Blues Society is a non-profit membership organization dedicated to the promotion and preservation of the Blues. The Maple Blues Awards is Canada’s national blues awards program. Its goal is to promote blues music across Canada, and to recognize outstanding achievement in the field.

Carlos Del Junco Band ***SOLD OUT***

The Waterfront Bistro, 590 Liverpool Rd. S., Pickering ON

Friday, January 21 @ 9 pm; Tickets: $25

Simultaneously sophisticated and raw, his playing blurs the boundaries between blues and jazz (hence the name for his band “The Blues Mongrels”). The emphasis is on blues, but Carlos and his band are not afraid to merrily traipse off in other directions delivering a seamless fusion of New Orleans second line grooves, swing, Latin, hip-hop or ska melodies, to swampy roots rock.

Bob Spelled Backwards

MERA Schoolhouse, McDonald’s Corners, ON

Saturday, January 22 @ 8 pm; $10 at the door

Bob Spelled Backwards is either a family folk music collective or a band with multiple personality disorder, depending on your point of view. A quintet of family members, Bob Spelled Backwards is also an umbrella under which a number of offshoots and scions have developed recently.

Danny Sullivan and Kathy Dorner, parents of the clan, have been writing songs and performing together for twenty-five years and were the nucleus of a Windsor-based folk-rock band called the Dharma Bums in the early 1990s. A life-threatening illness sidelined their musical career shortly after they recorded their never-released CD, “When God Was Just A Little Girl”. A life-saving transplant put Danny on the road to recovery, and they began writing again, and with the youngest three of their five children, have been performing as Bob Spelled Backwards for the past couple of years.

Their new material fuses traditional folk, country blues, ballads, mountain music, reggae and good old-fashioned train songs. Danny and Kathy continue to appear occasionally as a duo, under the moniker of The Dharma Bums. Margaret Sullivan (23) and Japhy Sullivan (14) have their own solo acts, and Noah (16) and Japhy Sullivan have recently begun to perform together as The Lonesome Brothers.

Bob Spelled Backwards - “quirky folk-country-psychedelic-blues”

Tickets are $10, available at the door or in advance from Tickets Please. They can be ordered by phone at 613-485-6434 or online at www.ticketsplease.ca. For more information, contact 613-268-2376 or email shakeyacres@hotmail.com.

Shrimp Daddy & the Sharpshooters

Rainbow, 76 Murray Street

Friday, February 11

Winner of this year’s Maple Blues Award for ‘New Artist or Group of the Year’, Michael “Shrimp Daddy” Reid is a journeyman harp player and front man who originally hails from Montreal. Michael moved to Toronto in 1999 and currently resides in Milton. In 2001 he heard Toronto blues harpist Ken Yoshioka at Toronto's St. Louis Bar and Grill and was instantly hooked. For his 2001 New Year’s resolution Michael promised himself to learn to play blues harp. Over the next two years he focused on learning his instrument, prior to focusing on developing his skills as a dynamic and highly entertaining front man. For a guy who took but a few lesson from harmonica legends Michael Pickett and Carlos del Junco, Michael rapidly developed into a driving force in vocalizing, interpreting and writing Chicago and West Coast jump and swing blues.
In 2009 Shrimp knew it was time to record his own material and sought out one of Canada’s finest young multi-award winning bluesmen, Steve Marriner of MonkeyJunk fame to produce it. The result was Shrimp Daddy’s seminal recording, “Messin’ With My System”. Inspired in equal measure by the sounds of Little Walter and William Clarke, “Messin’ With My System” is a must have for any blues aficionado’s library. Shrimp’s powerful baritone voice, rich harp tone and tasty phrasing will carry the listener through tunes filled with both irony and good humour.

Duke Robillard

Tucson’s, 2440 Bank Street

Wednesday, February 23 @ 8:30 pm

Sunday, February 27 @ 4 pm

Guitarist. Bandleader. Songwriter. Singer. Producer. Session musician. And a one-man cheering section for the blues, in all its forms and permutations.

In 2007 Duke received a Grammy nomination for his "Guitar Groove-a-rama" CD and was also honoured with the prestigious Rhode Island Pell Award for "excellence in the arts" along with actress Olympia Dukakis, actor Bob Colonna, and R.I. Choreographer/Festival Ballet director Mihailo "Misha" Djuric. The Pell award is named for Senator Claiborne Pell who helped to establish the National Endowment for the Arts and Humanities in 1965.

Roomful of Blues – which still continues, forty years later – gave Duke his first exposure to a wide public, and when he left after a dozen years, he played briefly with rockabilly king Robert Gordon, then cut two albums with the Legendary Blues Band (a sterling collection of former members of Muddy Waters' band). He led his own band until 1990, and then replaced Jimmy Vaughan in the Fabulous Thunderbirds.

Still on the road, he plays as many as 250 dates a year, still proving, night after night, that his true talent is bringing people out to hear the music, appreciate the show, and dance to the blues.
