Ottawa Blues This Week - 6 December 2010

SPECIAL EVENTS THIS WEEK

*******************************************************

Treasa Levasseur

Black Sheep Inn, Wakefield QC

Friday, December 10

Born in Winnipeg, raised in North Bay, and long-time resident in Toronto, Treasa Levasseur’s roots spread far and dig deep. She goes “home” several times a year, and when she played in Toronto’s famed Massey Hall as part of the Women’s Blues Revue, her mother came to see her perform — for the first time.

Levasseur plays piano, accordion, guitar, mandolin, and anything else she can get her hands on. In May of 2008, she won CBC Radio’s ‘Ultimate Sideman Showdown’ with her trusty accordion and charming presence. Heavily influenced by such soul artists as Mavis Staples, Carole King and Annie Lennox, she remains musically versatile and has played everything from heavy metal to hiphop, country, sugary pop and thoughtful folk music.

Above all, Levasseur has a passion for making music. She simply wants to PLAY — and, in addition to her own career, she cheerfully makes the time to play with at least three other bands on a regular basis. The fact is that she has now created a new family in the big city— a wide-ranging group of musicians and music fans who have learned to love her passionate commitment, unerring harmony singing and instrumental prowess.

Her 2nd CD, “Low Fidelity” may well be a collection of personal songs and stories, but it is never mawkish or sentimental. And her descriptions of romantic entanglements and love (sometimes lust) lost and found resonate with everyone. Everyone, after all, has been there, done that, and lived to identify with the way Levasseur tells the tale.

As always, she has plenty to say, and she will continue to say it with sincerity and sass and a powerful voice that cannot be ignored or denied.

A podcast from Australia where they play Terry's tune ‘Jones” as a Canadian DJ from CKLN Toronto enters the studio for a visit.

In Honolulu they played Sue Foley’s and Pete Karp’s version of ‘Scared’ back-to-back with Terry’s version.

AREA HIGHLIGHTS THIS WEEK

Virée Blues Boréale presents

Mike DeWay

Le Petit Chicago, 50 Promenade du Portage (in the Old Hull sector)

Wednesday, December 8 @ 8 pm

The 12th edition of Virée Blues Boréale is coming to a close. It has been a record edition, attendance wise, which points to an impressive lucky 13th edition to come.

To open your festive season, join the Virée Blues Boréale gang and Mike DeWay & The Only Blues Band. In his francophone Blues as well as his renderings of Chicago Blues hits, Mike DeWay brings a ‘joie de vivre’, a good-natured humour, reminiscent of yesteryear's join-in folksongs. He is a highly talented warm-voiced communicator, an artistically-inspired guitarist and his renderings in french stem from the purest tradition of Chicago Blues, from the Blues, and only the Blues. This talented and colourful performer defines the Blues as “music from the heart, from the guts and from the soul” and, as they say in Quebec, “party music”.

On this occasion, he’ll be accompanied by his own group, the Only Blues Band, a group of solid performers which includes a brass section. They are Ray Cantin on bass, Charles ‘Chuck’ Gilbert on guitar, Gilles Potvin on drums, Patrick Camiré on trumpet and Sébastien Grenier on sax.

Swan Song

This week – Marc Cowie

The Swan on the Rideau, 2730 River Road, Manotick ON
Saturday, December 11; 8 pm ‘til midnight

Marc Cowie has been playing guitar and singing for the best part of his life. In recent years he has taken his musical talents to a whole new and exciting high! His vocals have a unique sound that range anywhere from silky smooth to rockin’ raunchy! This young Canadian has some serious talent! Although his focus is guitar and vocals, his musical capabilities don’t stop there. He can play anything from the piano to the harmonica to bongos & djembes. His combination of vocals, various instruments and beats create a musical atmosphere that fills any room with a live concert experience. A young, talented and personable fellow he makes a good connection with his audience with old school rock and roll and original numbers

Marc has a band but will be performing solo at The Swan. He’s reminiscent of a young Bryan Adams and the young waitresses at the Swan place are gaga over him.

Just in time for Christmas – two unforgettable evenings of gospel music with Rev. Ernie Cox. Some of Ottawa’s best musicians will make up the band, along with a horn section featuring Michael Webster from New York City – he’s doing the horn arrangements, and will also be playing sax with the horn section as well as soloing. Core singers will be the London Trio Plus+, along with some additional singers, bringing the choir to about 15. Local and legendary blues/jazz singer Andrea Karam will be singing with the backup group, and she’ll solo as well.

Two evenings of grand and glorious gospel, and the addition of some uplifting and stirring Christmas gospel will surely get your hands clapping and toes tapping. Part of the evening will be devoted to some favourite carols. So come planning to sing! The ushers will be handing out booklets with words, so you can sing along to some of the carols with the band and the choir – all in soulful gospel style.
