CBC RADIO CONCERTS ON DEMAND

*******************************************************

Broadcast on CBC Radio Two at 7 pm nationally...

Monday, December 27

concert 1: Back to the Coast: Chris Church and friends
recorded at the Mainstage Tent in Halifax, as part of the 2010 Halifax Jazz Festival
Chris Church is a violinist and home-grown talent who has achieved international success working with Jesse Cook, as well as recording, performing and touring his own material. His music is world in every sense, and combines strong musicianship with a wide ranging stylistic base and an immediate, accessible sound. For this one-time concert, CBC radio 2 assembled a cast of world-class musicians to join Chris Church on stage. The result is heavy on cool rhythms with lots of percussion, a variety of wind sounds, captivating vocals, and two original pieces commissioned for this concert by CBC radio 2.

Wednesday, December 29

concert 1: Frank Loesser 100th Anniversary tribute
recorded in Studio 1 at CBC Vancouver as part of the 2010 Vancouver International Jazz Festival
"Spring will be a Little Late This Year," "Heart and Soul," "Baby It's Cold Outside" -- do you recognize these song titles? They're all courtesy of Frank Loesser. Loesser wrote the words and music for two of Broadway's all time hits: "Guys and Dolls" and "How to Succeed in Business Without Really Trying." He wrote music prolifically for Hollywood films -- from Jack Benny comedies, to war-time weepers, to Danny Kaye's depiction of "Hans Christian Andersen." And then there are his songs, more than 800 of them. June 29, 2010 would have been Frank Loesser's 100th birthday, so CBC gathered some of Vancouver's finest jazz heavyweights to pay tribute with new arrangements. Singers Karin Plato and Adam Thomas, backed up by Bill Coon, Chris Davis, Mike Allen, Miles Black, Sean Cronin, and Julian McDonough, had the audience on their feet.

Friday, December 31
Canada Live presents a special New Year's Eve show.
From young rising stars to some of Canada's best-known artists, from intimate stages to packed arenas, from solo acts to tribute performances, we look back some of our favourite concert moments of 2010.

Monday, January 3, 2011
concert 1: Brandon Isaak and The Twisters

recorded at The Top Knight Pub in Yellowknife
Brandon Isaak knows the road. As a musician growing up in Whitehorse, his first road trips were along the Yukon highways to play for audiences in the territory's small communities, like Mayo, Pelly Crossing, Dawson City and Burwash Landing. Along the way, he took what he learned from his musician father and developed a swinging, jump-blues style of songwriting and guitar playing. Then he headed south to BC, and hooked up with The Twisters. But he's never lost his feel for the north and those long stretches of highway. He spends a lot of time in Whitehorse, guaranteeing that he can live up to his nickname, "Yukon Slim".

concert 2: Chris Kirby and The Marquee
recorded at the Bella Vista Club in St. John's

With the release of his sophomore CD Vampire Hotel, Chris Kirby has emerged as one hot artist to watch in Eastern Canada. The 26-year-old Newfoundlander mixes R&B, soul and blues and delivers it rock solid and saucy. On stage, Kirby tears it up each night with his groove-busting band mates Craig Follett (bass) and Mark Marshall (drums). For this concert Chris Kirby and The Marquee are joined by the "Horns of Justice."

Friday, January 7, 2011
concert 1: Thom Swift
recorded at CBC Studio H in Halifax
Thom Swift had a great 2010. Last winter the blues and folk singer/guitarist released his latest CD, Blue Sky Day, to great acclaim. He spent the summer touring to very appreciative audiences, even opening some shows for John Hiatt. And he was picked to represent New Brunswick in CBC Radio Two's 2010 Great Canadian Song Quest: The Road Song. He brought his band - The El Caminos - to the legendary Studio H in CBC Halifax for an intimate concert before a very enthusiastic audience. It was roots music at its very best.

CBC Radio 1 broadcast, Fridays at 2:05 PM
Friday, January 7, 2011 on CBC Radio 1
concert 1: The Great Canadian Song Quest 2010 gala concert -- part 1
recorded at Glenn Gould Studio in Toronto
The 2010 Great Canadian Song Quest, was all about the road song. Canadians chose the roads, the 13 Song Quest artists from across the country wrote the new songs and everyone was brought together for an evening at Toronto's Glenn Gould Studio to celebrate the Canadian Road Song. Jully Black sang the praises of a Toronto neighbourhood street in "At the Roncies", while Hannah Georgas took her inspiration from a steep stretch of British Columbia highway in her new song called "Drive." Corb Lund, Keri Latimer, Jason Plumb and Chris Kirby all perform their own new songs, plus give us their take on some Canadian road classics like "Long May You Run" and "Carefree Highway." Rounding out the show are Song Quest artists Coeur de Pirate, Thom Swift, Brandon Isaak, Leela Gilday, Madeleine Allakariallak, Two Hours Traffic, and Hopeful Monster. The Great Canadian Song Quest gala concert: for one night, all roads meet in Toronto.

Lots of blues available in the concerts on demand section of the CBC Website …
