SPECIAL EVENTS THIS WEEK

Virée Blues Boréale’s 12th edition presents

Steve Rowe

with guest Brian Cober

Le Petit Chicago, 50 Promenade du Portage, Gatineau (in the Old Hull sector)

Wednesday, October 27 @ 8 pm

A participant in the very first Virée Blues Boréale show in 2005, with The Ramblers, our guest really won over all of our audiences, on both of his visits, given the depth of his compositions where Classic Blues cleverly mixes with today’s ‘Power Blues’; pure Blues with a foot on the international doorstep. For this occasion, this prolific Canadian Blues composer and performer will be accompanied by a distinguished guest, the creator of the impressive ‘double slide’ guitar technique. The technique has been copied, but its creator’s mastery has yet to be matched.

A master of the Blues guitar, Steve Rowe acquired a solid reputation as a guitarist with a unique sound. Presented as a ‘Guitar Hero’ by The Montreal Gazette and by Voir newspaper, his reputation spread beyond our continent’s frontiers. In 2000, “Driving the Blues Away” was selected for Best CD by Mr. Big Al Watts, an authority with the Brisbane Blues Society of Australia and “Front Rowe Center” was acclaimed by Belgian, Norwegian and German critics. His soundtracks for movies and TV series have earned him nominations and awards throughout his career. He was brilliant in performances at the Montreal International Jazz Festival, at Festiblues, at Sutton en Blues, at Blues de Tremblant, at Virée Blues Boréale, as well as in collaboration with legends like Bryan Lee, Colin James, Smokey Wilson, Hubert Sumlin and Buddy Guy. .

With his long time associate Alec McElcheran on bass, Steve Rowe and his guest, Brian Cober will have le Petit Chicago rocking with Blues of the ‘50s, jazz and Swing Bop Shuffle.

CKCU ANNUAL FUNDING DRIVE

*******************************************************

Please read Ron Sweetman’s letter below and support CKCU.

Dear Blues & Jazz Fans,

CKCU-FM is a remarkable and unique institution; starting thirty-five years ago as a campus radio station, it saw and accepted the challenge of the needs of the diverse communities who live in Canada's National Capital Region, and today, as a campus/community station, it broadcasts not only in English but in a dozen foreign languages. I also believe that our quality of programming in blues, classical, country, dance, jazz and world music is unsurpassed by any other Canadian radio station.

We are listener-supported radio; this means we receive no subsidies whatsoever from any level of government and can only survive because of your contributions and our volunteers' dedication.

I am writing to ask if you would consider sponsoring one hour of alternative/community radio at CKCU-FM 93.1 in Ottawa. CKCU provides at least six unique and valuable services to the community:

(1) We present a whole range of alternative music that you'll never find on commercial radio, presented by people with passion and authority. Our jazz, blues, dance, world, country and classical music programs cover the whole history of these musics, are presented by acknowledged experts in each area, and reject the superficial fashion-conscious “Top 40” approach you’ll hear on the region’s commercial stations.

(2) We provide a voice and a community billboard for many of the communities that make up our population; we have regular Aboriginal, Asian, Caribbean, Chinese, Christian, Filipino, German, Gospel, Haitian, Indian, Jamaican, Jewish, Latin American, Muslim, Persian, Scottish, Spanish, Somali, and Vietnamese programming – to name a few!

(3) We give an independent and diverse point of view on political and community affairs. We are not owned by a large profit-oriented corporation or a government, and our volunteers and our Board reflect the diverse opinions and viewpoints of the communities they come from.

(4) We bring you the renowned BBC World news four times every weekday, respected internationally for its independence and broad coverage.

(5) We support local musicians by publicizing their gigs and airing their CDs. You don’t have to be a big name to get heard on CKCU.

(6) We keep you informed of upcoming jazz and blues concerts that you might otherwise miss, by mentioning them on our programs and playing upcoming artists.

As a former Treasurer and Chairman of the Board, I can assure you that CKCU has a bare-bones budget. Because most of us are volunteers, we are able to bring you world-class radio at a cost of a little over $40.00 per hour! We have three revenue sources:

A voluntary levy paid by the students of Carleton University

Income from organizations who sponsor particular programs

The community of listeners and musicians [You!]

Our community Funding Drive runs this year from Friday October 22 until Sunday November 7. Our target for 2010 is $110,000. You can Dial and Donate at 613-520-3920 or 1-877-520-3920. You can complete a Pre-Pledge form. You can pledge by E-mail at www.ckcufm.com. However you pledge, you will receive a tax receipt for donations over $25.00, as we are a registered educational charity. When you pledge, please mention “In A Mellow Tone” if you want to support my program specifically.

Please see if you can sponsor just one hour of alternative/community radio. It's your community and your radio station and will cost you a tax-free $40.00. [Less than one dollar a week for 24/7 quality entertainment!]

With my sincere thanks for anything you can do,

Ron Sweetman (CKCU Volunteer since 1976)

SPECIAL EVENTS COMING SOON

*******************************************************

Chris Kirby & The Marquee

+ Jehan Khoorshed & His Problems

Irene’s Pub, 885 Bank Street

Saturday, November 6; $10

One of my favourite young blues singer/songwriters returns to Irene’s, Saturday, November 6. Chris Kirby’s music is classified by some as ‘modern pop/blues’. Whatever you label it, it’s blues-based, it’s all-original and the songwriting shows talent and promise. His 2nd CD, “Vampire Hotel” produced three #1 songs on the East Coast Countdown, a weekly, nationally-syndicated radio program that features the Top Ten hottest songs from Atlantic Canadian artists. All the songs on ‘Vampire Hotel” have catchy hooks, but Chris’ ability to craft intelligent lyrics raises his music above the pop crowd. His latest release is an all-acoustic album, “Sounds Like Wednesday”. Chosen to write the Newfoundland ‘road song’ for CBC’s Song Quest, Chris has some solo gigs on this tour, but in Ottawa he’ll be playing with his band, the Marquee.

Paul Reddick

Tucson’s, 2440 Bank Street

Saturday, November 6 @ 9:15 pm

One of the most original and inventive singer-songwriters in blues today, Paul Reddick is a strong, soulful vocalist whose focus and intensity connect him to the listener with genuine intimacy. He is an intuitive, self-taught musician who is always exploring and searching to express. His work has been influenced by such poets as William Blake, and William Carlos Williams as well as the music of Sleepy John Estes. His lyrics have a close-up, whisper in your ear quality of the best songs and poetry. His harmonica playing is a blend of complex rhythmic patterns, soaring solo lines, great dynamic range, toning and phrasing.

Rob Lutes

Elmdale House Tavern,

Sunday, November 7 @ 7:30 pm; $10

Rob Lutes is a soulful singer-songwriter from Montreal with an ever-growing collection of literate, moving meditations on life and love. His ability to encapsulate universal ideas and questions, even the subtle ones, coupled with his gritty, heartfelt delivery and world-class performance chops, have invited comparisons with several legends in the roots genre from John Hiatt to Fred Eaglesmith. Widely known for his inspiring and impassioned live performances, Rob Lutes' live shows always feature extraordinary playing, some improvisational magic and Lutes' intense, soulful vocals.

The Cooper Brothers

and

Blackie & The Rodeo Kings

Capital Music Hall, 128 York Street

Saturday, November 6 @ 9 pm; tickets $35

After a playing to a packed house for their CD launch last winter, The Cooper Brothers decided it was high time for another party and invited their friends Blackie & The Rodeo Kings to town for a not to be missed performance.

After a twenty year hiatus, The Cooper Brothers went down to Nashville in September 2009 to record their brand new all-original album with Grammy nominated producer Colin Linden at Masterlink Studio. With a wealth of great songs, Dick & Brian Cooper began recording; the result is a fabulous new album called “In From The Cold”. Texas roots rock legend and former Capricorn Records label mate, Delbert McClinton also sings and plays harp on the song ‘Jukebox’, currently featured on 101.9 DAWG FM.

http://www.thecooperbrothers.com

From humble beginnings, with a collective passion for well respected Canadian singer/songwriter Willie P. Bennett, Blackie & The Rodeo Kings came to life in 1995. Their debut CD “High or Hurtin'” was released in 1996 to critical acclaim throughout the country. Genuine friendship and a magical chemistry reunited the collectively successful solo artists in 1999 for their Juno Award winning release “Kings of Love”. The albums unique fusion of rock, roots, folk, blues and country, established the band as favourites with both fans and critics alike. Three more releases followed, to round out the decade – the 2004 Juno nominated “BARK”, “Let’s Frolic” (2006) and “Swinging From The Chains of Love” in 2009.

Blackie & The Rodeo Kings are putting the finishing touches on their highly anticipated new offering (to be released in 2011) “Kings & Queens”, an album of duets featuring some of the top female singers in the business including Emmylou Harris, Lucinda Williams, Rosanne Cash, Pam Tillis and Patti Scialfa..

Sherri Harding & the Heat

Irene’s Pub, 885 Bank Street

Friday, November 12; $7

Sherri Harding & the Heat serve up live soul and R&B music at Irene’s. Sherri Harding on lead vocals and guitar is a charismatic performer, with vocal chops to spare. Once you have heard her soulful voice live - you will not soon forget it! The Heat includes band leader Peter Beaudoin on drums, Ed Bimm on keyboards, Gino Scaffidi on guitar, Joe Hincke on bass, and Bernie Maisonneuve on backing vocals.

An intense blend of talented musicians and songwriters whose collective experiences have placed them in front of audiences all over the world! With gigs ranging from Prime Ministers and Governors General soirees to ‘down and dirty’ blues and rock clubs, the motto of this group is “been there, done that - sold the T-shirts”.

Hugh Pool & Mulebone EARLY SHOW!

Rainbow, 76 Murray Street

Thursday, November 18 @ 7:30 pm; $15 advance, $20 at the door

Mulebone is John Ragusa (conch shell, Jew’s harp, cornet, all manner of flutes, tin whistle and harmony vocals) and Hugh Pool (guitars, harmonica, boot board & singing). Together they play boot-stomping traditional blues … think Taj Mahal meets Jethro Tull! Their 2nd CD, “New Morning” was released in June 2010.

******************************************************

Fathead

Tucson’s, 2440 Bank Street

Friday, November 19 @ 9:15 pm

That they have been described as a Blues Tour De Force comes as no surprise. Georgia-raised lead singer John Mays has had a storied career that began in the Southern gospel tradition, crossing over into Doo-Wop, R&B and Blues, not to mention a stint with the Godfather Of Soul, James Brown. Hooking up
with band leader Al Lerman (harp and saxophone) in Toronto some years later, Fathead’s core has remained constant since 1992, offering ace musicianship, soul stirring harmonies and incendiary live performances. The writing tandem of Lerman and bassist Omar Tunnoch has produced an impressive body of work. Guitar ace Teddy Leonard is back and better than ever, along with iconic drummer Bucky Berger. Elements of funk, soul, and R&B are fused into the group's strong blues backbone, creating a fresh sound that is immediately recognizable as their own.

With two Juno awards to their credit, Fathead is truly an original band with a sound immediately recognizable as their own. They have a ball wherever they play and it shows!

Rick Taylor

The Waterfront Bistro, 590 Liverpool Rd. S., Pickering ON

Friday, November 19 @ 9 pm; tickets $20

Considered to be one of the finest acoustic blues artists going, with a set of vocals chords that would be the envy of any Blues Artist, young or old, Rick Taylor has no problem taking us back and accurately giving us the feel that we are sitting on a back porch, stomping our feet. He offers us the blues the way it was always meant to be, lean and clean, with a bourbon-and-gravel voice that sounds like it could be coming through the torn speaker of a 1927 Buick, and smouldering guitar work that beckons the ghosts of blues legends long gone. Close your eyes and you will find yourself sitting at a table in a juke joint, somewhere along Highway 61.

Since B.B. started recording in the late 1940s, he has released over 50 albums, many of them considered blues classics, like his 1965 definitive live blues album “Live at The Regal”, and his 1976 collaboration with Bobby ‘Blue’ Bland, “Together For The First Time”.

CBC RADIO CONCERTS ON DEMAND

*******************************************************

Monday, October 25
Breakout West/Western Canada Music Awards
– guest hosted by CBC Radio 3's Grant Lawrence
recorded at multiple venues over the weekend in Kelowna BC
From October 21-24, up and coming bands and musical veterans from all over the west are gathering in Kelowna for the BreakOut West Festival and the Western Canadian Music Awards. From club concerts downtown to the awards gala on Sunday night, Canada Live will bring you the best of the festival weekend in a special broadcast on Monday evening. Up for awards - and appearing on the gala stage - are Corb Lund, Bif Naked, Shane Yellowbird, Doc Walker, and more. Catch it all on Canada Live, while the applause is still echoing around the Okanagan Valley.

Wednesday, October 27
concert 1: He Said She Said, recorded at Times Change(d) High and Lonesome Club as part of the 2010 TD International Jazz Winnipeg Festival
Musicians Sue Foley and Peter Karp first met at the Ottawa Blues Festival. They went their separate ways for the next year, performing with their own bands, all the while writing each other letters, sharing their thoughts and feelings about touring, about writing, about music, and about each other. Then they met again and decided to turn their correspondence into song. The result is a very special and intimate body of work, covering all aspects of their relationship, making for a show that is rich, romantic, unique and moving.

Friday, October 29
concert 1: Keith Hallett, recorded at the Joan Harriss Cruise Pavilion in Sydney, Nova Scotia during the 2010 East Coast Music Awards showcase
Keith is a young blues guitarist with a very bright future ahead. He's been playing since he was a teen but now at the ripe old age of 20 - he's ready to take off. He's been influenced by all the great blues players and is already carving out his own distinctive and exciting style. This concert was recorded as part of the 2010 ECMA showcases in Sydney Nova Scotia - sort of like a cattle call with each act getting 30 minutes to impress the audience and music buyers. In Keith's case, he won the crowd over right away!

CBC Radio 1 broadcast, Fridays at 2:05 pm
Friday, October 29 on CBC Radio 1

concert 1: The Great Canadian Song Quest 2010 gala concert -- part 1 (note: part 2 to air on Friday, November 5), recorded at Glenn Gould Studio in Toronto
This year, the Great Canadian Song Quest focused on the road song. Canadians chose the roads, the 13 Song Quest artists from across the country wrote the new songs and everyone was brought together for an evening at Toronto's Glenn Gould Studio to celebrate the Canadian Road Song. Jully Black sings the praises of a Toronto neighbourhood street in "At the Roncies", while Hannah Georgas takes her inspiration from a steep stretch of British Columbia highway in her new song called "Drive." Corb Lund, Keri Latimer, Jason Plumb and Chris Kirby all perform their own new songs, plus give us their take on some Canadian road classics like "Long May You Run" and "Carefree Highway." Rounding out the evening are Song Quest artists Coeur de Pirate, Thom Swift, Brandon Isaak, Leela Gilday, Madeleine Allakariallak, Two Hours Traffic, and Hopeful Monster. The Great Canadian Song Quest gala concert: for one night, all roads meet in Toronto.
