SPECIAL EVENTS THIS WEEK

Mr. Something Something

Rainbow, 76 Murray Street

Friday, October 1 @ 10 pm

Mr. Something Something represents six years of composing, performing, risk-taking, improving and ultimately mobilizing the original vision of founding members Larry Graves [drums/percussion] and John MacLean [saxophone/voice]. Twenty years of playing, studying and traveling passed before these two childhood friends settled on the unbeatable dance rhythms of Nigeria, Senegal, Mali and Ghana as the most natural gathering place for the elements that would ultimately make up the Mr. Something Something sound.

Over the last five years the band has toured relentlessly in Canada, playing more than 500 shows, including appearances at many folk festivals and most major jazz festivals from coast to coast. Aside from wildly energized and unpredictable live shows, the band is becoming increasingly well-known for its green politics and environmental activism. The group did a number of “eco-dates” in 2007, playing a wind-powered show and performing in such unconventional venues as organic farms and food co-ops to highlight communities that are trying to minimize their ecological footprints.

Whiteboy Slim

Rainbow, 76 Murray Street

Saturday, October 2 @ 10 pm

Whiteboy Slim, (Maurice Richard Libby), carries the blues tradition. His raw, authoritative delivery is obviously born of his respect for the music. He bows to the sounds that have traditionally portrayed American troubles, laying them under today's influences to create genuinely modern music.

The new CD "I'm Still Here" is the first Whiteboy Slim recording that contains acoustic tracks, but it also contains the eclectic electric stuff that everyone has come to expect. The rhythm tracks on this one were recorded live off-the-floor, giving it a very live feel. The instrumentation is stripped down to guitars, harp and vocals, with no keys or horns this time round. It continues the balance of tradition and experimentation you have come to expect.

"Hey Little Girl" from the new CD has just won Honourable Mention in the Billboard International Song Contest.

Julian Fauth

House party in Carleton Place (sponsored by Heather MacTavish)

Friday, October 1

Neat Café, Burnstown ON

Saturday, October 2

Julian Fauth is an artist with an almost avant garde approach to the blues. An artist with an individualistic style that recognises and appreciates tradition but uses it as a blank canvas on which to paint his own interpretation of the genre. His Electro Fi debut CD “Songs Of Vice & Sorrow” won a Juno award and he followed with “Ramblin’ Son” … “superb piano playing, insightful lyrics splattered with almost visual imagery, and a voice that melds melancholy, anguish, joy and defiance as if they were identical quadruplets.”

The songs, as many of you will know firsthand, are excellent. Your favourites: ‘Blues Thing’, ‘Soul Lover’, ‘King Of The Blues’. ‘Engine Trouble’ are what bring fans to the shows. Friday, October 1 on the Canada Live podcast
Little Miss Higgins, recorded in CBC Regina's TV Studio 2

Described as a "pocketsize powerhouse," Little Miss Higgins - known to her friends as Jolene - is an engaging, playful, and sassy performer. Her music takes inspiration from the country-blues of the 1920s and 30s, but she definitely brings a contemporary 'prairie' sensibility to the table. Her background in musical theatre is hard to ignore, and it can partly explain the reason for Jolene's 'Little Miss' tag. But chance played a big part in it, too. Jolene recalls, "When I moved to Saskatchewan I made friends with this crazy Greek guy. He started calling me that and it just stuck." This special concert was co-presented by CBC Radio & Television at the CBC Broadcast Centre in Regina. It was the first live concert performance that featured songs from her new album 'Across the Plains'. Playing along with Little Miss Higgins are a stellar band of gents featuring guitar player Foy Taylor, Joey Lorer on upright bass, CĂ©dric Blary on clarinet and saxophone, and "Jimmie" James McKee on trumpet and euphonium.

Canada Live broadcasts are on traditional radio, Monday to Friday, at 7-8 pm (eastern).
