SPECIAL EVENTS THIS WEEK

*******************************************************

Mulebone

Rainbow, 76 Murray Street

Thursday, July 29, 7-10 pm ***EARLY SHOW***

Mulebone is a partnership comprised of multi-instrumentalist, John Ragusa and roots music specialist, Hugh Pool. The launching pad for their musical expression is traditional blues.

In Mulebone, John plays, conch shell, Jews harp, cornet, all manner of flutes, tin whistle, and chimes in on the harmony vocals; Hugh plays guitars, harmonica, boot board and sings, all with a mouth full of whiskey and a giant heart.

Together in Mulebone, Hugh and John play slide guitar boogies, 1 chord trance riffs à la Howlin’ Wolf, the up-tempo rags of Reverend Gary Davis and country blues of all shapes and colors. Sometimes they play close to the source, almost as if tracing the image, and at other moments, they re-examine the source, float above it, take a new look as one understanding their home from a distant land.

LOCAL HIGHLIGHTS THIS WEEK

Three Times Lucky

Tucson’s, 2440 Bank Street

Three Times Lucky plays mostly original blues-based music, along with a healthy dose of traditional and newer blues/roots music, including some classics by Sonny Boy Williamson II (Rice Miller), Muddy Waters, Hudson Whittaker (Tampa Red), Jimmy Reed and Delbert McClinton, although they are not averse to slipping into a Chuck Berry rocker, a Stones tune, a Steve Earle ballad or even adding a bit of a backbeat to a Hank William’s classic like ‘Mind Your Own Business’.

Andre & the J-Tones

D’Arcy McGee’s, 44 Sparks Street

Thursday, August 12 @ 9 pm ‘til Last Call

Rhythm & Blues, Motown, Stax, Rock, Funk, and all that great 60s and 70s music! Andre Bisson released “Rhythm & Blues Experience” in 2009. The emphasis on this CD is R&B and soul (old school, not ‘contemporary R&B’), no surprise given the title, but there’s also some blues mixed in. Andre Bisson is a relative newcomer to the blues scene. In his teens in Sault Ste Marie, he played rock ‘n’ roll, then R&B. In college, he studied jazz at Mohawk College in Hamilton, where he met the other members of the band, the J-Tones; all are professional musicians who have ‘day jobs’ teaching music.

Nine of the ten songs on the CD are originals; almost all the tracks on the CD are upbeat (‘Second Chance’ is the exception, with a smoky sax intro) and must fill the dance floor at live gigs. Come out and hear them live!

King Rattler

Rainbow, 76 Murray Street

Saturday, September 4

Swing-a-Billy Mayhem from the Nation's Capital
The members of King Rattler came together in the Summer of 2008 with the sole purpose of doing something different but still wanting to re-create much of the music they all love. The resulting sound is a cool mix of Rockabilly, Surf, 50s Rock ‘n’ Roll, Blues and Swing – all executed with a seriously hard-edged attitude, razor-sharp guitar licks, wailing harmonica and an underlying jungle-beat that will get any audience up on their feet!

concert 1: Charlie A'Court, recorded at the 2009 Riverfront Music Jubilee in New Glasgow, Nova Scotia
Charlie A'Court started playing in local bars with his father before he was legally old enough to be there. A rich rhythm & blues upbringing under the influences of such luminaries as B.B. King, Bad Company, Eric Clapton, Long John Baldry and a whole world of rock & roll and blues music paved the way for his development into an emotionally charged and soul moving performer. He's now more than comfortable playing stages throughout Canada and abroad, attracting fans everywhere with gutsy vocals and his colourful yet solid guitar playing. This concert was recorded at The Riverfront Music Jubilee in New Glasgow, Nova Scotia, just down the road from MacCallum Settlement, the tiny rural village where Charlie A'Court's love of music was born.

Canada Live broadcasts are on traditional radio, Monday to Friday, at 7-8 pm (eastern).
