Papa Shango is an Ottawa-based blues band that came together early 2008. What started out as a few old friends jamming out some tunes has evolved into an 8-piece full-sounding blues/funk/jam band with a wide range of influences. Over half of the members in the band have know each other since childhood and their days at Bell High, while the other half have come together through more recent friendships and affiliations at work.
Come check out local blues band Papa Shango tear up the stage from 9-11 pm at the Rainbow Bistro in the Byward Market. They will be covering some classic blues favourites and performing a few of their soulful originals. Blackburn is three brothers – Duane on B3, piano & vocals, Brooke on guitar & vocals and Cory on drums – with Mark Ayee on bass & vocals. They’ve been referred to as ‘Toronto’s first family of funk and soul’, not surprising given that their father is keyboard-player Bobby Dean Blackburn, well-known in Toronto’s blues/R&B scene in the ‘60s. Talented as the entire band is on their respective instruments (and they’re very good), their voices are even better. This band won Best New Artist at this year’s Maple Blues Awards and performed at the International Blues Challenge in Memphis, where they caught the ear of Rolling Stone’s editor David Fricke, who gave them an enthusiastic recommendation.

Terry Gillespie, singer, songwriter and founder of Ottawa’s renowned Heaven’s Radio is best known for his love of rhythm, his musical intensity and his unique soulful voice. He is considered one of the forefathers of the cultural dissemination of American music into Canada. Though raised in England, he was born in Edmonton, but it was in Detroit, in the '60s, that he cut his musical teeth, playing with Blues legends Howlin' Wolf, Albert Collins, John Lee Hooker, and Buddy Guy. Today his voice is frequently compared to Van Morrison and Bob Dylan while his guitar is reminiscent of Mark Knopfler. Terry will be performing with 2 very accomplished musicians: Terry Owen of the Grammy-nominated Queen Bee and the Blue Hornet Band and Jeffery Grosvenor master African drummer!

For nearly four decades Morgan Davis has been on the road travelling across Canada, the United States and Europe. His performances draw from a rich tradition of country blues, as well as his own contemporary songs infused with wit and a large dose of humour.
Originally from Detroit, he grew up listening to a prolific mix of rhythm and blues. The music of Jimmy Reed, Ike and Tina Turner, Chuck Berry and Fats Domino was in the air. While living in Rochdale College, Toronto's mecca for the subculture of the late 1960s, he immersed himself in the study of Delta Blues, especially the music of Robert Johnson. He hit the road with the Rhythm Rockets, and other bands, eventually forming his own trio.
Morgan's first solo recording "Blues Medicine", on Electro-Fi records, garnered critical acclaim as well as awards for songwriting and production. His multi- award winning release "Painkiller" won an impressive four awards at the 2004 Maple Blues Awards and not long after took home Canada's top music prize...the Juno for Blues Album of the Year.
Morgan Davis has established a rich career as a solo artist, and also performs with stellar lineups of musicians as a trio or full band. His most recent recording, "At Home In Nova Scotia", pays homage to Atlantic Canada where he has been a resident since 2001. His passion for the Blues has never wavered ... and he fully expects to be on the road for the rest of his life.

In the ‘80s, Baldry emigrated to Canada, living first in Toronto and then in Vancouver, where he died in 2005.
