Virée Blues Boréale presents

Shrimp Daddy & the Sharpshooters

with special guest Steve Marriner

Le Petit Chicago, 50 Promenade du Portage in the Old Hull sector

Wednesday, April 21

With a pseudonym like “Shrimp Daddy” one conjures images of the fishing fleet of Louisiana’s’ “Bayou Delcambre,” Cajun accents, Zydeco music, washboards, accordions & fiddles. Not to be! His deep gravelly vocals, accompanied by the mesmerizing sound of his harmonica, supported by his hard playing band “The Sharpshooters” whisks you to the juke joints of Mississippi as well as the hard edge blues clubs of Chicago. The music of the “Walters”, Willie Dixon, Howlin’ Wolf & Muddy Waters augmented with the unforgettable sound of William Clarke is his forte!

Transplanted from La Belle Province, this native Montrealer now makes Toronto his home. It was there he was introduced to & captivated by the sultry sound produced by the blues harmonica. Wasting little time he secured as many tapes & CDs containing blues harp and the masters as he could, haunted the local clubs and hounded the established players for advice which they graciously provided. Practicing diligently, his hard work shows.

The official launch of his November 2009 release, “Messin' With My System” with Shrimp Daddy & the Sharpshooters and special guest Steve Marriner takes place Wednesday, April 21.

SPECIAL EVENTS COMING SOON

*******************************************************

New Soul Cowboys featuring Anthony Gomes
Irene's Pub, 885 Bank Street
Tuesday, April 27 @ 9 pm; $10 cover

Saddle up with New Soul Cowboys as the rowdy Nashville power trio has arrived to lay down the law; to serve and uphold the virtues of Rock ‘n’ Roll. Singer/guitarist Anthony Gomes, bassist David Karns and
drummer Peter Lang have set out to leave their indelible mark on music by forging a brand all their own. The trio’s soul sonic force delivers the rough and tumble swagger of rock while having the audacity to
blend in the distinctive sounds of whiskey-soaked roadhouse Blues and southern-fried power Country. “If you haven’t heard,” Gomes proclaims, “there’s a new Sherriff in town.”

New Soul Cowboys describe their sound as Outlaw Rock ‘n’ Roll. “Anyone that is a musical badass has been an outlaw in their genre, living outside of conventional rules,” states Gomes. “We have created a sound that embodies the rebel spirit of musical outcasts like Led Zeppelin, Johnny Cash and Howlin’ Wolf. We’re here to take back Rock ‘n’ Roll,” the guitar-slinger boldly but unapologetically exclaims. “We are part of a new music revolution in rock. A place where bands know where the music came from, can really play their instruments, write their own songs and take no prisoners doing it. We couldn’t care less about American Idol, we’re here to take our music to the streets.”

Kim Simmonds

Rainbow, 76 Murray Street

Thursday, May 6

Kim Simmonds began his solo acoustic career in 1997 with the release of the CD, “Solitaire”. An album of traditional blues, “Solitaire” was the starting point of Kim’s rediscovery of his love of the acoustic guitar. Expanding upon that traditional foundation, “Blues Like Midnight” was one of 2001’s pleasant surprises as Kim’s songwriting depth and vocals shine right along with his always stellar guitar playing. With his third release in 2004, "Struck By Lightning", Simmonds pulled out all the stops with an album again full of superb guitar playing but this time fully augmented with a powerful acoustic rhythm section. Kim's 2008 release, "Out Of The Blue", is a collection of varied material that places him in a new setting, that of the singer/songwriter. This time around the guitar playing is understated with more emphasis on the song. His baritone voice has aged well, matured perhaps and now stands out throughout the CD's eleven songs. A "bare bones" recording with just the occasional background vocal, percussion and string section, "Out Of The Blue" displays Simmonds' wider musical range that will act as a perfect introduction for first time listeners.

Chris Kirby & the Marquee

Irene’s, 885 Bank Street

Friday, May 7

AND

Rainbow, 76 Murray Street

Monday, May 10

He's a witty, spitey, pasty white kid from the woods whose style is simply addictive. With his new record, “Vampire Hotel”, Chris Kirby gets down to bidness playing funky piano, saucy guitar, and singing as if the fate of his own mother hangs on every word. “Vampire Hotel” is heavily influenced by New Orleans Rhythm & Blues and Motown Soul, but rooted in the rich Newfoundland tradition of storytelling, and offers a unique and refreshing brand of music from a truly original artist. With the release of "Chris Kirby on Rum & Religion" in 2006, Chris emerged as a solo artist and a captivating songwriter and performer. Just four weeks after its chart debut, the title track from “Rum & Religion” hit number 1 on the nationally-syndicated East Coast Countdown.

Chris is joined by his A-list rhythm section, known as the Marquee. The Marquee includes bassist Craig Follett and drummer Mark Marshall. Mark is a talented young musician who recently showcased at the Cape Breton International Drum Festival, where he received praise from some of the industry's renowned players. Craig is a past MUSICNL nominee ("side musician of the year"), and regularly performs with many of Newfoundland's finest musicians and groups.

Chris Kirby and the Marquee have earned a solid reputation as an energetic and inspiring act, delivering a unique and unforgettable show every time. They’re touring Ontario and we’re fortunate they’re playing two shows in Ottawa.

Morgan Davis

Rainbow, 76 Murray Street

Thursday, May 13

For nearly four decades Morgan Davis has been on the road travelling across Canada, the United States and Europe. His performances draw from a rich tradition of country blues, as well as his own contemporary songs infused with wit and a large dose of humour.

Originally from Detroit, he grew up listening to a prolific mix of rhythm and blues. The music of Jimmy Reed, Ike and Tina Turner, Chuck Berry and Fats Domino was in the air. While living in Rochdale College, Toronto's mecca for the subculture of the late 1960s, he immersed himself in the study of Delta Blues, especially the music of Robert Johnson. He hit the road with the Rhythm Rockets, and other bands, eventually forming his own trio.

Morgan's first solo recording "Blues Medicine", on Electro-Fi records, garnered critical acclaim as well as awards for songwriting and production. His multi- award winning release "Painkiller" won an impressive four awards at the 2004 Maple Blues Awards and not long after took home Canada's top music prize...the Juno for Blues Album of the Year.

Morgan Davis has established a rich career as a solo artist, and also performs with stellar lineups of musicians as a trio or full band. His most recent recording, "At Home In Nova Scotia", pays homage to Atlantic Canada where he has been a resident since 2001. His passion for the Blues has never wavered ... and he fully expects to be on the road for the rest of his life.

Jack de Keyzer

Tucson’s, 2440 Bank Street

Friday, May 28

Jack has just added a 2nd Juno Award to his trophy case. Congratulations!

"Corktown Sessions”...is the regular touring show and it cooks. The auspicious evening was at the CorktownTavern in Hamilton last May 1st with DaveMcMorrow, keyboards, Alan Duffy, bass and Danny Lockwood, drums. The songs, as many of you will know firsthand, are excellent. Your favourites: ‘Blues Thing’, ‘Soul Lover’, ‘King Of The Blues’. ‘Engine Trouble’ are what bring fans to the shows. He also adds a few that keep the dance floor full, like ‘Signed Sealed Delivered’ and ‘Hold On I’m Coming’. Robert Johnson’s ‘When You Got A Good Friend’, in a new arrangement by Jack, is also a highlight. You may have purchased the studio CDs that feature these songs but with this CD you can have Jack’s show in your music room or your car whenever you want." John Valentyne/Maple Blues Magazine

INTRODUCING ROOTS MUSIC CANADA

********************************************************

From Andy Frank andy_frank55@yahoo.com

Hello! Many of you are aware of Roots Music Canada; we began operations in November of 2009, and currently exist as a blog that aims to put into context what (and who) is truly worth knowing about in Canadian roots music.

In this, we include some blues, some jazz, some rock; anything where roots/folk intersects with another genre is fair game for us.

You may be interested in seeing some of our HD interview and performance videos. It's free, so why not? Here are some direct links to blues-related pieces we've produced. And if you like it, I encourage you to become a Facebook Fan at our page, http://facebook. com/rootsmusicca nada
