Debbie Davies

Rainbow, 76 Murray Street

Tuesday, March 2 @ 9:30 pm

A twenty-year veteran of the road, Debbie Davies is truly one of the leading lights on the contemporary blues music scene today. She’s a former guitarist for Albert Collins and John Mayall and her latest VizzTone release “Holdin’ Court’ is high on the National Roots Radio Charts (blues). “Holdin’ Court” is all-instrumentals (5 covers, 6 originals), reminiscent of the blues instrumental albums released in the 1960s. Debbie Davis is nominated for a 2010 Blues Music Award for Best Traditional Blues Artist/electric/female.

Sweet & the Back Beat

D’Arcy McGee’s, Bells Corners

Friday, March 5 @ 9 pm

Sweet & the Back Beat’s sound is built around the soulful lead vocals of Larry Sweet, whose natural feel for R&B stylists like Wilson Picket, Eddie Floyd, Sam and Dave, and Otis Redding provides audiences a fresh reminder of why this music is so important. Larry is backed by a group of local veteran musicians: Tullio Granata on guitar, Ken Reynolds on drums, Tommy Rowe on bass, and Peter Krogh on keyboards.

It’s Blues and R&B theme night at D’Arcy McGees … classics from the 50s to today.

Virée Blues Boreale presents

JW-Jones

Le Petit Chicago, 50 Promenade du Portage (Old Hull sector)

Wednesday, March 3 @ 8 pm

Our next guest has just completed the recording of his 6th album “Midnight Memphis Sun” to be launched May 1st. This adventure was carried through with Hubert Sumlin, legendary Blues guitarist who has been proclaimed one of the 100 best guitarists of all times by Rolling Stone magazine, and Charlie Musselwhite, legendary harmonicist with 18 W.C. Handy Awards and 6 Grammy nominations.

Despite being present on the “Guitar Masters Volume 2” compilation CD, together with guitar legends B.B. King, Jimmy Page, Jeff Beck as well as Carlos Santana, and having been on the move for 12 years now, this group remains less known in our region! This is easily understood when one checks their tour schedule of the last few years: with 6 CDs, they have given over 1200 performances in some 200 cities in 13 countries on 4 continents! Indeed JW-Jones has mostly performed on major stages in the United States, Canada, Europe, Australia and Brazil.

After listening to a show by the Great B.B. King in 1995, JW-Jones immediately traded his drumming career for the guitar. His voice, developed in the style of the great vocalists of the 40s and 50s stressing the feelings and the good vibrations, allows him to go from the Chicago Blues to Rhythm ’N’ Blues and even into Jazz, on occasion. Unanimously recognized by his peers and granted the “Electric Act of the Year” title by the Maple Blues Awards, his Opus 4, “Kissing In 29 Days confirmed the writing and composing talents of JW- Jones. A real musical feast, with numerous gems, it is mostly made up of JW’s original compositions. But “Bluelisted”, released in 2008, features two of the East Coast’s most influential guitarists, Little Charlie Baty and Junior Watson, who perform together on the same track for the first time in their total of 70 years of career! And, as if that wasn’t enough, they perform with a highly renowned rhythm section: Richard Innes on drums and Larry Taylor on bass.

On stage, Wednesday, will be Martin Regimbald on bass and Jeff Asselin on drums, under the direction of JW- Jones, who is: "One of this country's top Blues guitar stars" according to the Globe and Mail.

Suzie Vinnick

The Waterfront Bistro; 590 Liverpool Road Pickering

Thursday March 11 @ 8 pm; tickets $20 advance / $25 door

Suzie Vinnick has the voice of a blues mama who's seen it all. She plays bass, guitar, saxophone, piano, Dobro, lap steel and mandolin. A self-taught musician, Suzie is one of the busiest session players and singers in the Canadian blues/roots music and jazz communities, having made appearances on more than a dozen recordings by other artists. She is a frequent headliner at festivals across the country and in the US, and in November shared the Massey Hall stage as musical director and featured artist in the Toronto Blues Society's annual all-star Women's Blues Revue. Multi-Maple Blues Award winner (for female vocalist, bassist and songwriter categories), Suzie was nominated for a 2009 JUNO for her 3rd album, “Happy Here”, produced by Juno-Award winning singer/songwriter Stephen Fearing, and for two 2009 Canadian Folk Music Awards (CFMAs).

“Possessed of a distinctively alluring voice – once described as being "spun of gold " – she has the power and grace to project it through finely-crafted (and increasingly self-penned) songs that make you sit up and wish you knew her better.” (Eric Thom)

http://www.suzievinnick.com/

Opening for Suzie is Jill Jambor, an emerging artist from Barrie ON. Jambor released her debut album "To Give You an Idea" in 2009. Her songs have been praised as fresh, deliberate and emotionally authentic.

Fathead – CD release party

O’Reilly’s Pub, Perth ON

Friday, March 12 @ 8 pm

and

Tucson’s, 2440 Bank Street

Saturday, March 13 @ 9:15 pm

The journey continues for two time Juno Award winners, Fathead, the sturdiest of Canadian bands.

Fathead, individually and collectively, has garnered numerous awards and accolades; notably two Juno Awards – Blues Recording of the Year for “Blues Weather” (1998) and “Building Full Of Blues” (2008) respectively. And now, buoyed by the return of long time member Teddy Leonard on guitar and the full integration of Bucky Berger on drums and percussion, Fathead offers up a new assortment of material on their latest release, “Where’s The Blues Taking Me”.

A more than worthy successor to “Building”, “Where’s The Blues Taking Me” takes it to a new level with the band’s most fully realized recording to date. With production handled by B-3 master Lance Anderson, the CD boasts a number of different sounds via always eloquent stories weaved into song, (courtesy of the band’s long time song writing team of Al Lerman and Omar Tunnoch), soul bearing vocals, sterling musicianship, and superior production values. The release demonstrates that the Fathead sound is constantly evolving and provides a generous supply of everything within Fathead’s wide musical sphere including straight up Blues, R&B, 50s framed Rock & Roll, Funk, Gospel, and even some cabaret Soul/Blues. All selections are delivered with the warmth and accessibility listeners have come to identify with the band.

The subject matter brings to light all things common and uncommon in everyday life and generally displays a courage to keep on moving forward despite life’s unpredictability. As evidence look no further than the title song:

“I nearly met my maker once or twice,
But I’m still here, I guess the time wasn’t right
I wake up every day with a smile on my face
Still the clock keeps ticking and I just can’t stop thinking
Where’s the blues taking me”

As an added bonus, Fathead closes the disc by dispatching a rare cover of Jackie Wilson’s ‘Lonely Teardrops’. The number, that the band has been performing regularly live, features a convincing John Mays vocal, an infectious Rhumba beat accentuated by Bucky Berger’s percussion, and a great ‘Say You Will’ vocal ride out. ‘Teardrops’ is a soul satisfying conclusion to an offering that effectively adds to the Fathead legacy.
