Cisco Ottawa Bluesfest has been running a new program called ‘Be in the Band’, which mentors young people who have an interest in music. The Ottawa Bluesfest organization is expanding this program to include at-risk youth in various communities such as Michele Heights, Lowertown, and Russell Heights. To support this initiative, the Ottawa Bluesfest organization is in desperate need of instruments to be used by participating students.
“We’re calling on the community to donate instruments,” says Bluesfest’s executive director, Mark Monahan. “Many people have instruments at home that they’re not using. We’re hoping people will want to donate those instruments to a very worthy cause.” Ottawa residents are encouraged to drop off their out-of-use instruments at the locations below. Join the Cisco Ottawa Bluesfest organization in sharing the joy of music!
Instruments can be dropped off between 10 am and 4 pm Mondays through Fridays at Ottawa Bluesfest HQ, 265 Catherine Street (2nd floor of the Ottawa Greyhound bus station); or at Compact Music Store(s) 190 Bank Street; or 7851/2 Bank Street, during business hours.

Jack de Keyzer

Jack de Keyzer is a Juno and 7X Maple Blues award winning artist, blues guitarist, singer, songwriter and producer and is considered one of the finest blues guitarists working today. The British born, Canadian resident’s career has spanned three decades. De Keyzer has released 6 CDs and 1 DVD as a leader and appeared as a session guitarist on hundreds of recordings. Jack de Keyzer’s songs have also appeared in video; rock & blues radio charts; other artists; TV soundtracks and in Motion Pictures.
In 2003 Jack was awarded Canada's highest musical honour, the Juno award for Blues Album of the Year, "6 String Lover". In addition to the Juno, de Keyzer has won 7 Maple Blues Awards and in 2007 won the International Songwriting Competition's first place for the song ‘That's the Only Time’. Jack's most recent accolades came from two very Canadian institutions. First, Prime Minister Steven Harper's son Ben received a guitar lesson from Jack at the request of Ben’s mother Loreen Harper (a fan) at the Prime Minister's residence in January of 2009. Jack was also awarded Great Canadian Blues Artist of the year from a poll of CBC radio listeners in 2009.
Jack is currently mixing tracks for a soon-to-be-released live CD while in the midst of writing songs for an all new original CD slated for a 2010 release. He performs across Canada and internationally (US, Mexico, France, Portugal, Greece) over 150 shows per year. Jack de Keyzer is a masterful, electric blues guitarist, soulful singer and songwriter of the first order. Look for his new live CD "The Corktown Sessions" to be released soon on the blue star imprint.

Born in Glasgow of Irish parents he was surrounded by music from day one – Irish traditional but also Jazz (his dad was a big fan). When the family moved to Toronto in 1966 he was exposed to soul, R&B, blues and rock that was blossoming in the city and coming in on the airwaves from the States, especially Wolfman Jack’s show. A career as a wedding DJ and almost professional karaoke singer got him noticed by one of Toronto’s bluesmen, Kevin Higgins, and he was invited to help form a band. Johnny’s eclectic background has led to a sound that is unique and fun – think New Orleans, Memphis, Motown/Chicago crossed with Sean Connery!
The Johnny Max Band has been entertaining fans throughout southern Ontario and beyond now for over 16 years. During that time he has released 4 CDs including “A Lesson I’ve Learned” in 2007 (all original compositions) which garnered him a Juno nomination and 4 Maple Blues Award nominations. His band has changed personnel over time but it has always included some of the crème de la crème of Toronto’s blues musicians and it will be no different for this Show. The Annual Night Before The Night Before Christmas Fundraiser
Celebrate the season and support your local food bank!

The 18th version of this popular annual tradition features great local entertainment and is a must-attend holiday event for music lovers and supporters of the Perth and District Food Bank. Hosted this year by well-known local band Tell Mama and managed by local businesses Strategic Media Solutions and Linden Financial Planning, the theme of this year's dance is "Local Flavour-Local Sustainability", underscoring the importance of buying local products and supporting local producers.
Last year's event was the Perth and District Food Bank's largest independent fundraising initiative in 2008, raising $6,500. Shelley Montreuil, Strategic Media Solutions principal and Tell Mama's front woman, hopes the event will be an even bigger success this year.
To make it easier to support the Food Bank, Montreuil donated the design and development of an e-commerce website (www.perthfoodbank.com) to the organization in 2007, permitting online donations.
This year, event-goers are being encouraged to commit to a regular monthly gift to the Food Bank. A pledge of $10 or more a month will give the donor free access to this year's dance (a $20 value). Regular monthly giving allows the food bank to budget to meet the community's needs in a more reliable and consistent fashion.
Event host Tell Mama was named Festivals and Events Ontario Best Original Act for 2009, received an Honourable Mention in the Billboard Song Contest and was a runner-up in the International Songwriter's Competition's jazz category. Jeremiah Sutherland wrote in the March 7, 2009 Bullfrog Music Reviews that Tell Mama's debut album is, "Definitely Juno material with not a weak song on the CD. Buy this one while you can."

Thursday, January 7 @ 9 am - Long John Baldry: In the Shadow of the Blues (2006)
The life and legacy of guitarist and singer Long John Baldry is examined in this one-hour documentary. Baldry played a key role in the growth of the British rhythm and blues movement, and led bands in the mid-1960s that featured Rod Stewart and Elton John, both of whom are interviewed in the documentary. In the `80s, Baldry emigrated to Canada, living first in Toronto and then in Vancouver, where he died in 2005.
