SPECIAL EVENTS THIS WEEK

*******************************************************

Yes, Virginia, there is a Santa Claus. Yes, Ottawa, there is a Zaphod.

We always open on Christmas Day. Here's why...

When I lived in Toronto many years ago (in the '70s) and was attending York University, I didn't have anywhere to spend Christmas Day, so I aimlessly walked down Yonge Street. At first I felt alone, because it seemed like everyone else had somewhere to go, some family to be with. But as I walked and walked I realized that there were many other people who were like me. I found myself saying 'Merry Christmas' over and over and having such interesting conversations with people who, like me, also had no Christmas plans and I began to ENJOY that walk and the way it made me FEEL.

Years later, when Zaphod's was on Rideau Street (in the '80s), I was living in an apartment on Daly Street, furnished with just a sofa, coffee table and a bed. A pretty sad existence, but one that my customers did not realize. Once again with nothing to do on Christmas Day I decided, since it was my club, I could open up Zaphod's and just have some quiet drinks and listen to some tunes by myself. LOUD.

But a strange thing happened. There was a knock on the front door. A regular customer dropped by. I let him in. Then another came. And another. And it wasn't just people who were alone that came. Friends who had already eaten Christmas dinner came to offer best wishes. Friends brought out-of-town friends, and relatives. And people started calling more friends. I didn't feel so alone anymore. And soon, we had a party happening.

So that's why I keep Zaphod's open on Christmas Day.

Come if you have nowhere to go. But mostly come because now you HAVE SOMEWHERE TO GO!

Merry Christmas,

Eugene

During this 10-week course you will learn the basis of good vocal technique and vocal warm up exercises, work within a group and individually on the most popular party songs. Learn how to "lead" the song, add vocal harmonies, how to blend with a group. Ben has over 600 songs to choose from!

In A Mellow Tone

with Ron Sweetman

Jazz from every era & every style – from 1917 to 2008. Each program features an artist, group, instrument, event, city or record label. Check out Ron’s website www.inamellowtone.com for info on upcoming shows and playlists (current show is posted several days in advance and past shows are archived). Ron is always happy to hear from listeners at ronsweetman@kalixo.com

This week, December 23 – Wednesday's In A Mellow Tone is dedicated to Jimmy Jancey. From Ron: I’ve been wanting to do a feature program on Jimmy Yancey, known as “The Father of Blues Piano” for as long as I’ve done this program, but some of his recordings are hard to find, and only recently did I fill in the gaps in my collection. We’ll start with his first recording, for Solo Art in May of 1939, and then move on to his RCA Victor session in October, 1939. The next session, in September 1940, was also for RCA Victor, and included two vocals by Jimmy. We move forward to December 1943 where Jimmy had a very fruitful session for the Session label. Then three cuts from the rare wire recordings made in June 1951, I believe at Jimmy’s house, and finally we hear six cuts from his final recording session, made for Atlantic in July 1951. All his recordings were made in his home town, Chicago. Many of his recordings include vocals by his wife, Mama Estelle Yancey, but I have excluded these so that we can concentrate on Jimmy’s piano playing, which was beautifully simple, and simply beautiful. After our Yancey feature, some seasonal tunes from Sonny Thompson, Tampa Red, and The Hot Club of San Francisco. This comes with Best Wishes for Happy Holidays to all listeners, whatever you're celebrating!

Next week, December 30 – Best of 2009: Ron plays some of his favourite acquisitions in 2009, including Ab Baars, Sean Bergin, Bobby Bradford, Alex Cline, Chris McGregor, Harry Miller, MOPDTK, King Oliver, Roswell Rudd, John Stevens, Keith Tippett, Stan Tracey and Corey Wilkes.
