*******************************************************

Nominees from across Canada have been announced for the 13th Annual Maple Blues Awards! The Maple Blues Awards is Canada’s national blues awards program. Its goal is to promote blues music across Canada, and to recognize outstanding achievement in the field. Voting is open until Sunday, December 13th at noon (EDT). Blues fans cast their votes online, at www.mapleblues.ca.

Ottawa based swamp boogie, soul R&B and bedroom funk band MonkeyJunk leads the way with six nominations! This year's winners will be announced at the 13th Annual Maple Blues Awards Gala in Toronto, on January 18, 2010 at Koerner Hall. This very special evening is Canada's national annual celebration of homegrown blues talent. It's also a night of great music by the Maple Blues Band, comprised entirely of Maple Blues Awards winners and nominees. Koerner Hall is the newest addition to Toronto’s fine list of cultural centres and theatres. The intimate and elegant hall opened in September 2009 with 1,140 seats and features state-of-the-art acoustic treatment. Danny Marks, Host of BLUZ FM and David Gogo, Cordova Bay Recording Artist, will be hosting the Maple Blues Awards.

MonkeyJunk drummer fans please note … you can write in candidates on your ballot, so you can vote for Matt Sobb too!

Virée Blues Boreale presents

Angel Forrest

Addiction, 117 Promenade du Portage in the Old Hull sector

Wednesday, December 2

For the final show of the season, Virée Blues Boreale presents one of Quebec’s top blueswomen, who has built a 22-year international career in Quebec, Mexico, Japan and Morocco.

A Blues stream constantly flows through Angel Forrest’s life and music. After a two-album foray into pop music, Angel Forest came back strong to the Blues, for her 6th album and with a complete show presenting her own compositions. Electrifying, passionate, an artist who sings with all her body and soul; Unique. More entrancing than ever, everybody is attracted to Angel Forrest’s charisma. She sings; her songs charm everyone; they’ve got a blues/roots aroma, heavy with emotions ... her own way! Thrill to the warm lounge atmosphere of her all new show, in an acoustic version, where she’ll offer you her new album’s songs and some ‘never heard before’ song versions. She’ll be joined as usual by Rob MacDonald, her long time guitarist and partner who will provide the perfect blues/roots surround atmosphere sound. Angel Forrest will be presenting her 6th album which she plans to launch in March 2010. She will also be presenting her previous album, “Wonderland” (recorded in 2007), to help us get into a festive mood, all in Blues and Jazz.

Big Soul Project Christmas Concert
Dominion-Chalmers United Church, 355 Cooper Street

Saturday, December 5 @ 7:30 pm

Those who have been to our performances before know we bring great positive energy to the stage and deliver fresh, upbeat interpretations of traditional Gospel music. We perform all this great music with a soulful beat, thanks to our talented R&B Band. The concert will also give everyone a chance get into the Christmas spirit, with our popular sing-along carols. This year the choir is delighted to welcome two guests who will bring an exciting new dimension to Big Soul Project’s performance.

The first is Sheldon Neil of Sole Purpose Mime. Sheldon silently interprets positive messages delivered through song, spoken word, instrumental and theatrical avenues, and combines these with various elements and styles of interpretive dance and stage props to present a fresh message of empowerment to audiences. Sheldon is a local Ottawa boy and a graduate of Canterbury High School.

Our second special guest is Bertram Boldon. Bertram is credited with having helped to form the first steel band in Montreal, maybe even in Canada. Steel band has its origins in the backyards and neighbourhoods of Trinidad and Tobago. Through his years as a professional musician, Bertram has maintained an excellence in his playing that matches the standards set in Trinidad. Audiences are in for a huge treat, as Bertram’s steel pan will be a featured instrument in our concert.

Big Soul Project’s Music Director, Roxanne Goodman has helped the choir to grow and evolve over the last year, with new songs added to our repertoire, new soloists and new treatments of Gospel favourites. Roxanne brings a wealth of experience to the choir, as an accomplished vocalist, composer and pianist.

The concert will also see the release of our new CD, “Dancing in the Joy”. Hosting our concert will be CBC’s Adrian Harewood.

Michael Kaeshammer

Harold Shenkman Hall, 245 Centrum Boulevard, Orleans

Wednesday, December 9 @ 8 pm; $33

Some guys have all the luck. That phrase certainly comes to mind when you consider Michael Kaeshammer. When they were handing out musical talent, they made a return visit to this cat. A piano-playing prodigy as a teenager, he has matured into a singer and songwriter of real skill and creative imagination. Factor in boyish good looks, and it almost seems unfair. The 6th album of his career represents his best work yet. The bright and optimistic vibe of the record mirrors the current outlook on life of its creator.

Jack was also awarded Great Canadian Blues Artist of the year from a poll of CBC radio listeners in 2009.

Jack de Keyzer is a masterful, electric blues guitarist, soulful singer and songwriter of the first order. Tell Mama hosts

The Annual Night Before The Night Before Christmas Fundraiser

Celebrate the season and support your local food bank!

Royal Canadian Legion Hall, 26 Beckwith Street, Perth ON

Saturday, December 19 @ 7:30 pm, $25 ($20 + a food bank donation)

The 18th version of this popular annual tradition features great local entertainment and is a must-attend holiday event for music lovers and supporters of the Perth and District Food Bank. Hosted this year by well-known local band Tell Mama and managed by local businesses Strategic Media Solutions and Linden Financial Planning, the theme of this year's dance is "Local Flavour-Local Sustainability", underscoring the importance of buying local products and supporting local producers.

Last year's event was the Perth and District Food Bank's largest independent fundraising initiative in 2008, raising $6,500. Shelley Montreuil, Strategic Media Solutions principal and Tell Mama's front woman, hopes the event will be an even bigger success this year.

To make it easier to support the Food Bank, Montreuil donated the design and development of an e-commerce website (www.perthfoodbank.com) to the organization in 2007, permitting online donations.

This year, event-goers are being encouraged to commit to a regular monthly gift to the Food Bank. A pledge of $10 or more a month will give the donor free access to this year's dance (a $20 value). Regular monthly giving allows the food bank to budget to meet the community's needs in a more reliable and consistent fashion.

Event host Tell Mama was named Festivals and Events Ontario Best Original Act for 2009, received an Honourable Mention in the Billboard Song Contest and was a runner-up in the International Songwriter's Competition's jazz category. Jeremiah Sutherland wrote in the March 7, 2009 Bullfrog Music Reviews that Tell Mama's debut album is, "Definitely Juno material with not a weak song on the CD. Buy this one while you can."

Joining Tell Mama onstage this year is local rock band The Commuters and possibly a few surprise guests. For updates on who is appearing, visit www.thenightbeforethenightbeforexmas.com.

Tickets are available at Shadowfax in Perth. If you can't attend the event but would like to help, tickets and other sponsorship opportunities can be arranged by contacting Linden Financial Services at dorothy@lindenfinancialplanning.ca or at (613) 264-2761.
