13th Annual Maple Blues Awards Nominees Announced!

*******************************************************

Nominees from across Canada have been announced for the 13th Annual Maple Blues Awards! The Maple Blues Awards is Canada’s national blues awards program. Its goal is to promote blues music across Canada, and to recognize outstanding achievement in the field. Voting is open until Sunday, December 13th at noon (EDT). Blues fans cast their votes online, at www.mapleblues.ca.

Ottawa based swamp boogie, soul R&B and bedroom funk band MonkeyJunk leads the way with six nominations! They received nods in the Entertainer of the Year, Electric Act of the Year, and Recording of the Year, for their record “Tiger In Your Tank”, categories as well as Male Vocalist of the Year and Harmonica Player of the Year for Steve Marriner and Guitar Player of the Year for Tony D.

This year's winners will be announced at the 13th Annual Maple Blues Awards Gala in Toronto, on January 18, 2010 at Koerner Hall. This very special evening is Canada's national annual celebration of homegrown blues talent. It's also a night of great music by the Maple Blues Band, comprised entirely of Maple Blues Awards winners and nominees. Koerner Hall is the newest addition to Toronto’s fine list of cultural centres and theatres. The intimate and elegant hall opened in September 2009 with 1,140 seats and features state-of-the-art acoustic treatment. Danny Marks, Host of BLUZ FM and David Gogo, Cordova Bay Recording Artist, will be hosting the Maple Blues Awards.

MonkeyJunk drummer fans please note … you can write in candidates on your ballot, so you can vote for Matt Sobb too!

Choose The Blues Productions presents

Blues On the Rideau, Season 5

Harrison Kennedy Band

The Cove Inn, Westport ON

Friday, November 20; 7 pm buffet dinner, show 8:30 – 11 pm; $55

There are still tickets available for Electro Fi recording artist Harrison Kennedy & his Band at The Cove Inn on Friday, November 20. Don’t miss him – he doesn’t get up this way often. He’s worth the price of
admission solo but with a band it is even a better deal.

Harrison has been nominated for a Juno Award in the Blues category for each one of his 3 CDs over the past 6 years and was just nominated for four 2009 Maple Blues Awards (http://www.mapleblues.ca) including Album Of The Year for his terrific new CD “One Dog Barkin’”.

A direct descendant from African slaves who escaped from the U.S. into Canada via the Underground Railway in the 1800s, Harrison has a deep connection to the blues and plays R&B, soul and roots equally well. He was the lead singer for a Detroit based soul R&B group called Chairmen Of The Board back in the ‘70s with Billboard hits like ‘Gimme Just A Little More Time’ and ‘I’m The Chairman Of The Board’. They played venues such as the Apollo in New York and appeared on American Bandstand, Soul Train and Johnny Carson. He returned to Canada and disappeared from the music scene for awhile but roared back with in the late ‘90s. He is a prolific songwriter, has a great voice full of passion and power and plays excellent guitar and harmonica. He will be backed by bass, drums and keyboards.

bluessmyth

Rainbow, 76 Murray Street

Tuesday, November 30 @ 9:30 pm

After two successful albums "30 Pieces of Silver" and self-titled "bluessmyth", "Sola Gratia" has just been released. This riveting and introspective recording from the Canadian trio includes powerful tracks written about Hurricane Katrina and deep human experiences such as reaching out in despair, soul searching, and finding redemption.

In essence, bluessmyth creates beyond the confines of a single genre. The name of the group melds together "blues" and "smyth" (or smith) as the symbolic forging and fusion of the roots of blues music with heavy metallic overtones, and gospel & soul influences. The dynamic of bluessmyth has evolved with the addition of drummer Celene Yohemas. Seamlessly matched with the solid, definitive bass lines of Jason Yaholkoski, and supporting soulful singer and guitarist Chris Yaholkoski, the new dynamic is a recipe for international success.

The former drummer turned guitarist for Albert Collins paved the way for a stellar career in his own right after building a big time reputation as guitarist for British blues legend John Mayall as part of the Bluesbreakers, with whom he toured for 10 years.

In 1993 Coco Montoya released his first solo record and the rest as they say is history! Known not only for the stinging licks that he learned from the Ice Man, Montoya is also an incredibly soulful singer and songwriter.
