BENEFIT for ALEC FRASER

*******************************************************

The Blues for Alec Fraser Fundraiser Benefit Concert
With: Jerome Godboo, Steve Strongman, Danny Marks, Jack de Keyzer and more

Silver Dollar Room 486 Spadina Avenue, Toronto ON
Monday, October 19; Tickets: $20.00, all proceeds going to Alec

Whenever one of our musical brothers and sisters have needed help, Alec was the first one to stand up and chip in. Now he needs our help. Alec has been unable to work recently due to a medical condition and on Monday, October 19, Toronto's loyal blues community will be banding together to help Alec by holding a fundraising benefit concert at the Silver Dollar Room.

Since moving to Canada in his teens, Alec has been one of the country's most in-demand bass players and has performed or recorded with international artists such as Bo Diddley, The Drifters, Kim Wilson, Ian Gillian, Willie" Big Eyes" Smith, Ray Benson, Mel Brown, Sam Myers, Finis Tasby, Cream's Jack Bruce, and The Jeff Healey Blues Band. In 2004, Alec won `Bassist of the Year' at the Maple Blues Awards.

As a producer, Alec has worked on Jeff Healey's “Mess Of Blues” album which spent three weeks at number one on the Billboard blues charts, Jack de Keyzer's “6 String Lover” which won the 2003 Juno Award for ‘Blues Album of the Year’, Morgan Davis' “Painkiller” which won the 2004 Juno for ‘Blues Album of the Year’ and 2004 Maple Blues Award for ‘Recording of the Year’, and countless others.

Ottawa area fans who would like to contribute to the fundraiser should contact:

Tim Des Islets, Toronto Blues Society

CKCU FUNDRAISING DRIVE

*******************************************************

CKCU-FM is a remarkable and unique institution; starting thirty-four years ago as a campus radio station, it saw and accepted the challenge of the needs of the diverse communities who live in Canada's National Capital Region, and today, as a campus/community station, it broadcasts in over twenty languages. I also believe that our quality of programming in blues, classical, country, dance, jazz and world music is unsurpassed by any other Canadian radio station.

We are listener-supported radio; this means we receive no subsidies whatsoever from any level of government and can only survive because of your contributions and our volunteers' dedication.

I am writing to ask if you would consider sponsoring one hour of alternative/community radio at CKCU-FM 93.1 in Ottawa. CKCU provides at least six unique and valuable services to the community:

(1) We present a whole range of alternative music that you'll never find on commercial radio, presented by people with passion and authority. Our jazz, blues, dance, world, country and classical music programs cover the whole history of these musics, are presented by acknowledged experts in each area, and reject the superficial fashion-conscious “Top 40” approach you’ll hear on the region’s commercial stations.

(2) We provide a voice and a community billboard for many of the communities that make up our population; we have regular Aboriginal, Asian, Caribbean, Chinese, Christian, Filipino, Gospel, Haitian, Indian, Jamaican, Jewish, Latin American, Muslim, Persian, Scottish, Spanish, Somali, and Vietnamese programming – to name a few!

(3) We give an independent and diverse point of view on political and community affairs. We are not owned by a large profit-oriented corporation or a government, and our volunteers and our Board reflect the diverse opinions and viewpoints of the communities they come from.

(4) We bring you the renowned BBC World news four times every weekday, respected internationally for its independence and broad coverage.

(5) We support local musicians by publicizing their gigs and airing their CDs. You don’t have to be a big name to get heard on CKCU.

(6) We keep you informed of upcoming jazz and blues concerts that you might otherwise miss, by mentioning them on our programs and in e-mailouts.

As a former Treasurer and Chairman of the Board, I can assure you that CKCU has a bare-bones budget. Because most of us are volunteers, we are able to bring you world-class radio at a cost of a little over $40.00 per hour! We have three revenue sources:

A voluntary levy paid by the students of Carleton University

Income from organizations who sponsor particular programs

The community of listeners and musicians [You!]

Our community Funding Drive runs this year from Friday October 23 until Sunday November 8. Our target for 2009 is $109,000. You can Dial and Donate at 613-520-3920 or 1-877-520-3920. You can complete a Pre-Pledge form if you've received one in the mail. You can pledge by E-mail at http://www.ckcufm.com. However you pledge, you will receive a tax receipt for donations over $25.00, as we are a registered educational charity.

For those of you with pets, In A Mellow Tone will again this year have two special categories of donor – “Cool Cats” and “Hip Hounds”, so please mention your pet’s name and type if you’re pledging on his/her behalf. When you pledge, please mention “In A Mellow Tone” if you want to support my program specifically. [You can also direct your donation in support of John Tackaberry’s ‘Black & Blues’.]

Please see if you can sponsor just one hour of alternative/community radio. It's your community and your radio station and will cost you a tax-free $40.00. [Less than $1 a week for 24/7 entertainment!].

With my sincere thanks for anything you can do,

Ron Sweetman, CKCU Volunteer since 1976

HELP NAME JW's 6th CD...

*******************************************************

From JW-Jones:

Since we value the opinion of our family, friends, and fans so much, we're opening the door of creativity to all of you to help us out. We need to name our new CD, to be released in early 2010.

RULES (super easy!)

- The word blues cannot be in the title.

- It has to be as unique as possible = If you search for it on google like this: ["Your CD Title"] without the brackets - we need less than 200 matches.

- Please don't stop at one idea - send as many as you like.

- Even if YOU think it's terrible, it probably isn't! It might be something we can work with.

- Don't be shy.

PRIZES

- Winner will receive 3 signed copies of the new CD, signed poster, t-shirt, and a credit (a "thank you" to winner’s name) inside the CD.

CONTEST DEADLINE: As we need to get this sorted out ASAP, the first great idea we get might be the one we use there is no deadline time/date to this contest other than when we have a title that moves us!

------------------------------------

HELP NAME AN INSTRUMENTAL ON THE CD featuring HUBERT SUMLIN...

So far we have "Sumlinizin'" which is not bad! But we want to test the waters to see if something better comes up. Using Hubert or Sumlin in the name would be excellent. One word would be even better than excellent! It doesn't have to be a real word. Make one up!

Thanks again, look forward to the ideas... please post them on JW-Jones Facebook group, or send a message to info@jw-jones.com

Virée Blues Boréale presents

Kevin Mark

Addiction, 117 Promenade du Portage (in the Old Hull sector)

Wednesday, October 21 @ 8 pm

For three years now, the beautiful Katrina has been the Muse, the inspiration to Virée Blues Boréale’s producer. For the occasion of her birthday, she was asked to choose one of her favourite artists, one to celebrate with. As the selection proved very difficult, there might also be some surprise guests! The Blues: the musical expression of the tortured soul, of the guts, and in all its different color shades! For sure, it’s the complaint of a tormented soul but, often, it’s a celebration of the small joys that sprinkle life’s hardship! Our guest, one of Canada’s great Bluesmen, excels in that spectrum of the Blues.

Kevin Mark combines a strong stage presence with boisterous rhythms and inspiration by the top artists of the Blues, of R&B, as well as of Rock ‘n’ Roll of the ’50s and ’60s … a classic retro sound and original compositions likely to become tomorrow's classics. His booming voice, a strong rhythm section and blasting saxophones make it easy to understand why this group won the ‘Show of the Year’ award at the Lys Blues Gala four times since 2004. The Kevin Mark Blues Band has been awarded over 30 prizes and nominations since 1998. Since his performance at the 5th edition of Virée Blues Boréale, he has added a third opus to his discography. Recorded at his own Hideaway Studio, in Montreal, “Cuttin’ Loose” comprises 14 works that carry the listener from the West Coast of the United States to Chicago through New Orleans, still retaining Kevin Mark’s unique writing and sound. In France, the CD held the top of the Blues radio stations chart for 2 full months and is still very much heard. It also received rave reviews from all over the world. You can expect to feel like snapping fingers and tapping your feet as all is set to party the traditional Blues way.

The Temptations

Centrepointe Theatre, 101 Centrepointe Drive

Saturday, October 31 @ 8:30 pm; tickets $65, $75

One of the most iconic bands in the history of American music, 2009 marks the 45th Anniversary of the Temptations first #1 hit. Founding member Otis Williams originated the band in 1961 and the Temptations had their first #1 hit & tour in 1964-1965.

Since then, the Temptations have become an institution noted for their precise choreography and blend of R&B vocal sensibilities. A continuous line up of 5 highly talented male singers working together as a vocal powerhouse has propelled the Temptations thru out their 45-year history. With a focus on the vocal ensemble, rather than a lead singer, many singers have come and gone, yet (founding original member) Otis Williams has continued to keep the Temptations sound alive and at the top of the charts. As members of the Rock n Roll Hall of Fame and listed as one of the top 50 bands of all time in Rolling Stone Magazine, The Temptations have 4 Grammy Awards, 18- #1 Billboard singles, 23 top ten singles and 10 top ten albums.

With great songs, and a 15 -piece band, the live stage show is an experience that continues to ‘wow’ audiences around the world. The Temptations constantly enlist new fans as they continue to deliver the Motown vocal sound that made them famous. “Get ready, cause here they come”.

Victoria Concert Hall, Coburg ON

Friday, November 6 @ 8 pm; tickets $26.50

Licensed LLBO Event, cabaret style, tables and chairs, great comfort, great site lines and great sound in an historic setting. www.zapp-productions.com

Inspired by blues legends like T-Bone Walker, Charlie Patton and Big Joe Turner, Duke Robillard's guitar work has seamlessly spanned the worlds of jazz, blues, and swing since he founded the renowned big band, Roomful of Blues, in 1967.

Since 1980, Duke has recorded 20 acclaimed solo albums and toured the world both with his own band and also as Jimmie Vaughan's replacement in The Fabulous Thunderbirds. Most recently Duke played guitar and toured with music legend Tom Waits. Called "one of the great players" by the legendary B.B. King, Duke's upbeat live performance, accented by a swinging horn section, is a tasteful display of a wide variety of blues styles.

The Blues Music Awards (formerly W.C.Handy Awards) have named Duke Robillard "Best Blues Guitarist" four years out of five (2000, 2001, 2003, 2004) making him the second most honoured guitarist for that award! He was also nominated in that category in 2005, 2007 and again this year of 2008. In 2007 Duke received a Grammy nomination for his "Guitar Groove-a-rama" CD.

Other awards over the last decade include three Canadian Maple Blues Awards in 2001, 2002, and 2003 for "Best International Blues Artist," The Blues Foundation's "Producer of the Year" award in 2004, The French Blues Association "Album of the Year" award in 2002 (”Living with the Blues”) and "Guitarist of the Year" awards in 1999 and 2002.

As a solo artist, he has released eleven CDs on the Stony Plain label, plus one with label mate Ronnie Earl and one with The New Guitar Summit. Duke's latest CD "Stomp the Blues Tonight” (on Stony Plain) adds horns and digs deep into the riotous, raunchy, rockin' '40s and '50s R&B that helped launch rock and roll.
