The Mason Rack Band is now on their third tour of Canada! The band has recently been tearing up the international scene and has leaped into the higher performing spectrum of live blues rock. Their success is due to Mason’s huge stage presence and creative performance. There is a great drum duel where Mason walks out into the audience playing anything he can find, only to challenge the drummer (Joel Purkess in Canada; Jay Conway in Australia) to fight back. The show leaves the audience gob-smacked and craving more; they have never seen anything like it before! Some try to imitate it and that only goes to show the new ground breaking ideas Mason is bringing to the live stage. Now with their new bassist (Markus Engal in Canada; Ray Goddard in Australia) the band is truly making their mark.

That they have been described as a Blues Tour De Force comes as no surprise. Georgia-raised lead singer John May has had a storied career that began in the Southern gospel tradition, crossing over into Doo-Wop, R&B and Blues, not to mention a stint with the Godfather Of Soul, James Brown. Hooking up
with band leader Al Lerman (harp and saxophone) in Toronto some years later, Fathead’s core has remained constant since 1992, offering ace musicianship, soul stirring harmonies and incendiary live performances. The writing tandem of Lerman and bassist Omar Tunnoch have produced an impressive body of work. Guitar ace Teddy Leonard is back and better than ever, along with iconic drummer Bucky Berger. Elements of funk, soul, and R&B are fused into the group's strong blues backbone, creating a fresh sound that is immediately recognizable as their own.
Fathead is currently recording their seventh disc which will be produced by Juno Award winning musician/producer Lance Anderson and will be released by Electro-Fi Records in January 2010. With two Juno awards to their credit, Fathead is truly an original band with a sound immediately recognizable as their own. They have a ball wherever they play and it shows!

The Ontario Council of Folk Festivals meets once a year in Ottawa – a crowded event with seminars, galas, official showcases, and 700 delegates. It’s the annual highlight of the Canadian folk music scene (however you define that).
Alas, the general public can’t be invited; this is a business event with representatives from dozens of festivals across the country, talent buyers, bookers, agents, managers, record companies — and hundreds of artists who want to be seen, want to be heard, want to be noticed.
However, the Sweet Beaver Suite is a major showcase event held concurrently with the convention — and is one of the very few that’s open to the public.
The suite, organized by artist manager Shauna Cooper and publicist Richard Flohil, has been a special part of folk music gatherings in Austin, London, Memphis, Kingston, and other cities where the ‘folk business’ gathers. Why: Because folk need to hear the new folk, now.
The Ottawa event is happening at the Glue Pot Pub at Queen St., and will feature a total of 22 artists over two nights. The public is invited: Cover charge is $6.00 per night.

Singing hosts, Arlene Bishop, one of the best songwriters in Canada, with some of the darkest material – and a quick, joyful and humorous host. Jay Aymar, based in Toronto via the Sault, will sing songs from his new album – accessible county-folk that sticks in your mind.
Shelly O’Brien: A quirky songwriter who recently represented Canada at the 2nd Annual Helsinki International Ukulele Festival.
Kaia Kater-Hurst: Just 16, she’s the youngest performer at the Beaver Suite. Plays excellent banjo, and her repertoire is made up of old Old Timey American country music.
Lynne Hanson: Ottawa singer-songwriter with a growing international audience in Europe.
Gordie Tentrees: Direct from the Yukon (he’s on a cross-Canada tour), he’s just released this third CD. As well-known in Europe as he is here.
Jadea Kelly: Country/folk singer with a sweet voice, a big heart, and a killer band.
Katherine Wheatley: Just released her first album in 10 years – the stunning “Landed” – Wheatley plays close to 150 shows a year in Canada and the US.
Andrea Ramolo: She’s been described as the antidote to too much Joni Mitchell. Tough, edgy and vulnerable, all at once. Think Janis Joplin without the histrionics.
Billy Manzic: The pride of Thunder Bay, here’s a singer-songwriter who offers nods to Steve Earle and other rootsy troubadours.
Nudie & The Turks: Bluegrass/country with attitude, laughter and balls from Prince Edward Island— people will be dancing.
Saturday, October 17:
Singing hosts, Ben Sures is smart, spunky, funny, and a ‘born MC’; from Winnipeg, he’s also an award winning songwriter with fine songs and an open heart. Alan Rhody is an ‘honourary Canadian’ based in Nashville where he creates songs for supergroups, hangs with John Prine, and drives back and forth to Canada.
Samantha Martin: A singer with a voice that’ll remind you of k.d. lang when she was country, and a key figure in the success of Toronto’s hippest club, The Dakota.
Kate Reid: A queer with a sense of humour – who else could write a song like “The Only Dyke at the Open Mic.” She can make you cry as well as double over with mirth.
Special Guest: Well, we know who she is, but we can’t tell you.
Alejandra Ribera: People just cannot resist this taste of world music, jazz, and folk wrapped up with a voice that sounds like Tom Waits crossed with Edith Piaf. Or imagine an Argentinian-Scottish Lhasa.
Ariana Gillis: Young people who are just 18 years old shouldn’t be clear-eyed, smart and sassy and as brilliant as this woman. This one is a star in the making.
The Undesirables: Sean Cotton and Corin Raymond have the songs, the attitude, and the showmanship to pull off that rarity in the folk world: The boy duo.
The Good Lovelies: This three-woman trio have the best and most accurate name in the business. They tour non-stop, write excellent songs, tell hilarious true stories and charm everyone within earshot.
David Baxter: Veteran producer, songwriter, music publisher, session player, guitar virtuoso and all-purpose sideman has finally made his first solo record, after 30 years in the business. Slow-burning country folk with heart and smarts.

Clarence-Rockland RnB Fest

The 2nd Clarence-Rockland RnB Fest will be held from November 5-8. The festival started last year with only one night of Rhythm N Blues music and the event was a success. This year continues the blues festival committee's mandate to assist local youth. Net profits from the festival will help support programs to encourage youth in the arts, support local performing arts and also this year le Centre de santé communautaire de l'Estrie and the Roberts/Smart Centre will receive a share of the net proceeds to support their youth counselling and mental health programs in the Clarence-Rockland area.
Headlining this year's festival on Saturday, November 7, is Ricky Paquette. In addition to his regular evening concert during the festival, Ricky also headlines an afternoon youth concert and joining him will be the winner of a Bandarama competition this coming October for local youth bands and singer/performers. The singer/songwriter awards will take place on Sunday, November 8 as part of the festival. The festival's lineup also includes Jake Thomas, The Coggs, Silver Creek, Lydie, Jérémie Séguin, Willis Pride and Monday Rebel.

It’s hard to believe that 40 years have flown by since Donnie ‘Mr. Downchild’ Walsh and his late brother, Hock formed the renowned group that would be the inspiration behind the blues in Canada and, in particular, the world famous Blues Brothers. Downchild Blues Band is celebrating this very special anniversary with an amazing group of very special friends including movie icon Dan Aykroyd AKA Elwood Blues, Colin Linden, James Cotton, Wayne Jackson of the Memphis Horns, Local Guitar Virtuoso, Ricky Paquette, and more surprise guests to be announced.
The Downchild Blues Band is a Canadian blues institution with an international reputation. They have been rewarded with an array of awards from both the media and the music industry, including a 1991 Juno Award for Best Roots and Traditional Album and ‘Entertainers of The Year’ at the 2007 Maple Blues Awards. A constant throughout, Donnie ‘Mr. Downchild’ Walsh, the leader and founding member of the band, has kept the music alive and relevant in the world of blues today. Downchild band members include some of the most well respected musicians in the country, who have performed together for over 15 years. This includes silky smooth singer and harmonica player Chuck Jackson, tenor sax player Pat Carey, Mike Fitzpatrick on drums, rhythm captain Gary Kendall on bass, and former American super-group rocker Michael Fonfara (of Rhinoceros fame) on keyboards.
Downchild has always been a band with loyal fans and in 1970 Dan Aykroyd was one of their biggest supporters, recording two Downchild songs, ‘I Got Everything I Need (Almost)’ and ‘Shotgun Blues’ for the multi-platinum selling Blues Brothers album "Briefcase Full of Blues". Dan Aykroyd will be appearing with Downchild for three extraordinary performances in Ottawa, Montreal and Toronto.
Grammy nominee, Colin Linden has played on and produced hundreds of albums for such luminaries as Lucinda Williams, Colin James, Bruce Cockburn and David Wilcox to name a few. The show features a heavy dose of electric blues and rhythm and blues, with the occasional selection of sixties soul. The first hour is dedicated to artist profiles and reviews of recordings on particular labels. In the second hour there is a blues calendar, a rundown of events in Toronto, Montreal and Ottawa, and interviews with “new and reissued blues and rhythm and blues tracks on wax, alternating with “live blues and R&B for a Sunday night” in the last half hour of the show. On the last Sunday of every month, the show goes “down in the delta” for a selection of acoustic blues tracks in the final half hour of the program.
