ON THE ROAD TO MEMPHIS

The Ottawa Blues Society will again host ‘On the Road to Memphis’. The winner of this event will go to Memphis TN, January 20-23, 2010 to compete as the OBS representative in the Blues Foundation’s 26th International Blues Challenge.
Semi-Final Round #1 is scheduled for Wednesday, September 16 @ 7 pm at Tucson’s, 2440 Bank Street. Four bands will compete – Sweet & the Backbeat, the Jesse Greene Band, Pat Johnson & Hard Pushin' Papa and Mumbo Jumbo Voodoo Combo.
Semi-Final Round #2 is scheduled for Wednesday, September 23 @ 7 pm at Tucson’s. The four bands competing that night are Rocket Rached & the Fat City 8, Wicked Grin, Phlegm and the Drew Nelson Band.
The Finals will take place on Friday, September 25 @ 7 pm at Tucson’s. The two highest-scoring bands from each Semi-Final Round will compete.
During the local competition, bands will be judged by the same criteria used at the IBC in Memphis. Each band will provide a 25-minute performance and be judged by regional volunteers knowledgeable about The Blues. A $5.00 cover charge at the door applies and will serve as fundraising support for travel and accommodation expenses for the winning OBS representative.

You already know that the Virée Blues Boréale’s team is fond of venturing off the beaten track to help you discover some promising new Blues artists, those who will become top of the bill in future years. That is the case with our guest! We discovered this Montreal West pubs feature by chance; the quality and the simplicity of his Blues moods with folk and rock shades immediately appealed to us. Some may think that we were informed ... but no: Shane Murphy’s nomination as «discovery of the year» at this year’s Lys Blues was announced after the launching of our season’s program. A proof that our choice was once more right and shared by Quebec’s whole Blues Circuit!
Officially formed in March 2002, the Shane Murphy Trio has since played its unique and widely appealing variety of funk and blues at over 500 live shows to a collective audience of thousands. The band has a solid fan base in their hometown of Montreal as well as elsewhere in North America, thanks to powerful and original live shows.
Shane Murphy’s warm voice, a little like Dave Matthews’, is cleverly supported by Shian Ramjohn (bass and vocals) and by Rob Kraft (drums and vocals). Their first demo album, “What a Girl Needs”, consists of five songs recorded between February and May 2002, and it charted on college radio stations. And success may come again from their all new original full length album, "West End Plaza".

Learn to sing Rock style with instructor Angie Russell. Angie is a voice & guitar instructor at Alcorn Music Studios and lead singer and lead guitarist for Bluestone Band. During this 12 week course each student will work on a rock song. You will learn vocal technique and tips for maintaining a healthy voice, exercises to develop your sound, musical phrasing and adding ornamentation. You will receive handouts as well as taking notes. Each session will begin with warm-ups, followed by the topic of the day, masterclass style singing, ending with an overview. This course comes with a song list from which you can pick your first, second and third choices for the song you would like to work on during the course. Angie will be providing a custom recorded CD with rhythm tracks for your song choice, in your key, for practicing and using throughout the course. Final performance will take place at the Alcorn Music Studios adult Coffee House at Tucson's on Dec. 13th. Please include your song choices when registering.

October brings a great Blues Double Header from Chicago to Eastern Ontario … guitar virtuoso Melvin Taylor with journeyman Blues guitarist Studebaker John.
Melvin Taylor is one of the most talented guitarists the planet has produced … an original virtuoso who constantly pushes his own limits. While people in Europe have been aware of Melvin’s talents for years, North America is just starting to catch on. When Melvin plays, jaws hang open as people watch him play the electric guitar in a way no one has ever imagined.
Studebaker John has played and recorded with the Yardbirds as well as the Pretty Things. The Chicago tribune says “His harmonica work recalls past masters like Little Walter and Big Walter Horton while his slide guitar is descended from Elmore James and Hound Dog Taylor (with whom he was friends). On top of that, John is a powerhouse singer and a talented songwriter.”
Backing the two sets is journeyman drummer Kenny Coleman, who has played with everyone in Chicago as well as doing work for legends like Johnny Mathis and Grammy Award winners the Clark Sisters, Koko Taylor and more.
On bass, the master Felton Crews who spent a few years playing with jazz icon Miles Davis! In the Blues world, Felton has played with everyone from Otis Rush to Bonnie Raitt, including a few years with Charlie Musselwhite.
This is a stellar line-up that is going to thrill Blues and music lovers to the soul. Each guitarist will do his own set and then jam they will together at the end.
The First Annual One Day Blues Revue in Cobourg will feature Canadian blues during the afternoon (2-5:45 pm) with the Double Bill at night starting at 8:15 pm until midnight.
Dave Mowat, Blues Harmonica great spent 9 years out west making his living playing Blues, playing with Canadian Blues great Big Dave McLean and Ben Sures. Dave was also featured on a CBC-produced showcase called Wang Dang Doodle in Winnipeg. His performance is exceptional; his sound on harp is a nod to classic players like Little Walter and Walter Horton, while his strong vocals are more like Howlin' Wolf.
The Fabulous Tonemasters are aptly named; they pay attention to their sound. These guys have been playing Blues for years and guitarist Gerry spent a number of years playing with Marty and the Mojos.
Rick Fines is a veteran of the folk and blues circuits in North America. In October 2005 Rick he took first place in the Sweetgum Bottom Acoustic Blues Competition. His song ‘Riley Wants His Life Back’ won first place in the blues category of 2003 International Songwriting Competition, with B.B. King one of the judges! He has won MapleBlues Awards for Songwriter of the Year and Acoustic Act Of The Year twice and has received eight additional nominations. His work with Jackson Delta (for 15 years) brought nominations for both Juno and Handy Awards.

It’s hard to believe that 40 years have flown by since Donnie ‘Mr. Downchild’ Walsh and his late brother, Hock formed the renowned group that would be the inspiration behind the blues in Canada and, in particular, the world famous Blues Brothers. Downchild Blues Band is celebrating this very special anniversary with an amazing group of very special friends including movie icon Dan Aykroyd AKA Elwood Blues, Colin Linden, James Cotton, Wayne Jackson of the Memphis Horns, Local Guitar Virtuoso, Ricky Paquette, and more surprise guests to be announced.
The Downchild Blues Band is a Canadian blues institution with an international reputation. They have been rewarded with an array of awards from both the media and the music industry, including a 1991 Juno Award for Best Roots and Traditional Album and ‘Entertainers of The Year’ at the 2007 Maple Blues Awards. A constant throughout, Donnie ‘Mr. Downchild’ Walsh, the leader and founding member of the band, has kept the music alive and relevant in the world of blues today. Downchild band members include some of the most well respected musicians in the country, who have performed together for over 15 years. This includes silky smooth singer and harmonica player Chuck Jackson, tenor sax player Pat Carey, Mike Fitzpatrick on drums, rhythm captain Gary Kendall on bass, and former American super-group rocker Michael Fonfara (of Rhinoceros fame) on keyboards.
Downchild has always been a band with loyal fans and in 1970 Dan Aykroyd was one of their biggest supporters, recording two Downchild songs, ‘I Got Everything I Need (Almost)’ and ‘Shotgun Blues’ for the multi-platinum selling Blues Brothers album "Briefcase Full of Blues". Dan Aykroyd will be appearing with Downchild for three extraordinary performances in Ottawa, Montreal and Toronto.
Grammy nominee, Colin Linden has played on and produced hundreds of albums for such luminaries as Lucinda Williams, Colin James, Bruce Cockburn and David Wilcox to name a few. Linden is touring in support of his new album entitled "From The Water" on True North Records/Universal. Special guests for Toronto and Ottawa include James Cotton and Wayne Jackson. James Cotton is a legendary blues harmonica player who grew up in the South playing with Muddy Waters and is now celebrating 65 years in the entertainment business! The one and only Wayne Jackson of the Memphis Horns, has played on 52 Number One records and over 80 Gold and Platinum records and toured the world and recorded with such stars as Elvis, Aretha Franklin, Otis Redding, Al Green, Neil Young, U2 and Peter Gabriel.

The show features a heavy dose of electric blues and rhythm and blues, with the occasional selection of sixties soul. The first hour is dedicated to artist profiles and reviews of recordings on particular labels. In the second hour there is a blues calendar, a rundown of events in Toronto, Montreal and Ottawa, and interviews with “new and reissued blues and rhythm and blues tracks on wax, alternating with “live blues and R&B for a Sunday night” in the last half hour of the show. On the last Sunday of every month, the show goes “down in the delta” for a selection of acoustic blues tracks in the final half hour of the program.

Tuesday, September 29 @ 10 pm – Long John Baldry: In the Shadow of the Blues (2006)
The life and legacy of guitarist and singer Long John Baldry is examined in this one-hour documentary. Baldry played a key role in the growth of the British rhythm and blues movement, and led bands in the mid-1960s that featured Rod Stewart and Elton John, both of whom are interviewed in the documentary. In the ‘80s, Baldry emigrated to Canada, living first in Toronto and then in Vancouver, where he died in 2005.

Renee Austin (2005): Series exploring the world of contemporary blues music. This episode spotlights W.C. Handy Award nominee Renee Austin, an outstanding singer/songwriter who has been compared to Janis Joplin and Tina Turner.

Documentary examining the fascinating life, rich musical history and passionate spirit of the Canadian jazz/swing/blues/folk singer, guitarist and storyteller. This grandson of slaves has an impressive repertoire of 1300 songs.
