AFTER FEST BLUESFEST SHOWS

Bluesfest presents David Maxwell

Fat Tuesday’s, 62 York Street

Thursday, July 9 @ midnight

Multiple music-awards winner David Maxwell has amassed an enormous resume throughout the years. He has played piano with some of the greatest and most well known musicians in the blues and has established a reputation as one of the finest pianists alive. David's style encompasses elements of blues and jazz, but he is best known for his soulful virtuosity and unmatched ability to tap into the heart of Chicago Blues. In fact, he is often compared to Otis Spann thanks to his ability to resurrect the spirit and sound of the master of post-war Chicago Blues piano. But David is no mere imitation; he has his own unique style and sound.

Bluesfest presents David Gogo

Rainbow, 76 Murray Street

Thursday, July 9 @ midnight

Although still relatively young in "blues years", David Gogo has accomplished much in his career. So far he has three Juno nominations, was named Musician of the Year at the Western Canadian Music Awards, was twice named Guitarist of the Year at the Maple Blues Awards, and has been bestowed with the CBC Saturday Night Blues, Great Canadian Blues Award for a lifetime contribution to the blues in Canada.

Nine albums have been released under his name and he has been a guest on a number of other artist’s recordings. David has composed music for television and major motion pictures and his songs have been performed and recorded by various musicians worldwide.

Whether he’s showcasing his blistering guitar licks and soulful vocals during his electric performances or drawing the crowd in with his humour and down-to-earth personality during his acoustic shows, audiences throughout North America, Europe, and Scandinavia can attest to his outstanding talent.

Bluesfest presents Peter Voith

Rainbow, 76 Murray Street

Friday, July 10 @ 11 pm

Peter Voith's strongest effort to date is with his new blues/folk/rock project called The Peter Voith Trio (PV3). Peter is freshening things up with this new trio. The group features seasoned Ottawa professional musicians Dan Joseph on bass guitar—whose styling is reminiscent of Marcus Miller, Jaco Pastorius, Flea, and Victor Wooten. Ryan MacIntyre on drums is most influenced by Hip Hop, Punk, and Funk rhythms. Combined with Peter's energetic blues-rock electric guitar, infused with folk and pop songwriting sensibilities, this trio is a guaranteed eclectic crowd pleaser. For those who enjoy musical spontaneity, extended jams with strong youthful energy, and a passionate focus on song writing, this is a trio not to be missed.

Bluesfest presents Mumbo Jumbo Voodoo Combo

& C.J. Chenier

Fat Tuesday’s, 62 York Street

Friday, Saturday & Sunday, 11 pm & midnight

Mumbo Jumbo Voodoo Combo was formed in Ottawa in July 1991 to explore the pulsating rhythms and melodies of New Orleans and the Bayou. Without lead guitar, they have transformed Mardi Gras anthems into their own, while keeping true to the genre. The quartet consists of four vocalists, drums, keyboards, bass guitar, and saxophones. During their non-stop sets, elements of Blues, Boogie, Jazz, Reggae, Calypso, as well as Cuban Folk music can be savoured in their MUMBO GUMBO. Everyone plays percussion during the big Mardi Gras bead-tossing rave-ups; the dance floor fills with gyrating dancers that grasp for Mardi Gras beads being tossed into the crowd. Audience members scramble onto the stage to play with the band when the washboard is given up to be sacrificed . . . You don't want to miss this party!

C.J. Chenier was literally born into the musical tradition of southwest Louisiana and Texas Zydeco-a chugging, accordion-led blend of French Creole and African-derived influences. Born the son of great Zydeco king Clifton Chenier, the first Grammy Award winning musician of his genre, C.J. was totally immersed in R&B, funk and jazz from childhood. A natural player, C.J. won a scholarship to study music at Texas Southern University and spent his college years exploring his own musical style. Coming into adulthood, C.J.'s interest in the music of his ancestors grew and after college graduation he joined his father's legendary Red Hot Louisiana Band on the road. After his father's death in 1987, C.J. assumed leadership of the band. While he continued to develop his personal accordion style, C.J. also gradually began grafting on influences from his boyhood. As C.J. explains, "I play it the way I play it. All my father really told me was to do the best I could do with my own style."

Bluesfest presents Carlos Varella

Rainbow, 76 Murray Street

Saturday, July 11 @ midnight

Often likened to Bob Dylan and Paul Simon, Carlos Varela is one of Cuba’s best known singer-songwriters of the nueva trova or “new song” movement. His poetic tunes, which include rock, folk, pop, and salsa influences, are often subtle, socially aware commentaries about Cuba although entirely relevant to any other part of the world. Whether he's performing a dance tune or a tender ballad, Carlos’ voice is always powerfully captivating.

Bluesfest presents Naomi Shelton & the Gospel Queens

Hard Rock Café, 73 York Street

Sunday July 12 @ midnight

Naomi Shelton and the Gospel Queens' “What Have You Done, My Brother?” just came out on Daptone Records. Naomi is originally from Alabama, where she began singing in church with her sisters at the age of six, and she later found a home in New York in the '60s. She has a rich musical history, including performing as the house singer at a club called the Night Cap on Flatbush Ave, as well as in various R&B groups throughout the '60s/'70s/'80s. It was at the Night Cap where Naomi met the legendary Cliff Driver, and later, in 1999, Naomi joined Cliff and the back-up singers he'd assembled, forming Naomi Shelton and the Gospel Queens (Cliff is the musical director and plays organ). Gabe Roth, co-founder of Daptone Records, first saw Naomi in 1999 when she and Cliff were doing a set in New York with James Brown bassist Fred Thomas. Roth was blown away by her voice and presence, and eventually he and Driver got together in 2005 and decided to record a full-length album. Roth says of seeing her perform for the first time: "Somewhere between the first word she sang and the next set break, I fell in love. I had never had my heart so fiercely captivated by a singer before." “What Have You Done, My Brother?” is Shelton's first full-length release.

Bluesfest presents Silver Creek + Alberta Cross

Rainbow, 76 Murray Street

Sunday, July 12 @ 11 pm, midnight

Silver Creek consists of Shawn Tavenier (vocals, guitar), Anders Drerup (guitar, vocals), Jeff Rogers (piano, organs, vocals), Mark Laforest (Bass), and Shane McEwan (drums). The diverse line-up combines the experience of some of Ottawa's most talented players. Their exciting and powerful live show features the strength of three vocalists, against the backdrop of a thundering rhythm section. They are sometimes soulful, twangy, driving and loud, but they never stray far from what they truly are; just a good old rock and roll band.

Bluesfest presents L’il Ed & the Blues Imperials

Rainbow, 76 Murray Street

Monday, July 13 9 @ midnight

From smoking slide guitar boogies to raw-boned Chicago shuffles to the deepest slow blues, guitarist/vocalist/songwriter Lil’ Ed Williams is an awe-inspiring master bluesman. He and his blistering, road-tested band, The Blues Imperials—guitarist Mike Garrett, bassist James “Pookie” Young, drummer Kelly Littleton—are celebrating 20 amazing years together. Live, Lil’ Ed And The Blues Imperials simply can’t be beat as Ed breaks out the deepest back-bends, the highest toe-walks, and the most authentic electric slide-guitar blues being played today. Not since the heyday of Hound Dog Taylor & The HouseRockers has a Chicago blues band made such a consistently joyous, rollicking noise.

Bluesfest presents Mumbo Jumbo Voodoo Combo

& L’il Brian and the Travellers

Fat Tuesday’s, 62 York Street

Monday, July 13 @ 11 pm & midnight

Lil Brian & The Travelers are living up to their reputation as the most innovative and musically accomplished young Zydeco band on the scene today. Lil Brian's latest release, Funky Nation, is the band's boldest statement yet that Zydeco can be a cutting edge sound as vital to a new generation of fans as it has been for long-time buffs. Brilliantly drawing upon contemporary urban black sounds while remaining respectful and true to their Zydeco roots, Lil Brian & The Travelers have created an incredibly exciting modern form of Zydeco music that is both rhythmically and lyrically sophisticated and just plain unbelievably funky!

The Rainbow, 76 Murray Street

Sunday, July 26 @ 3:30 pm

You’ll have three chances to see this year’s Juno award winner in the Ottawa area. His Juno-winning CD, “Ramblin’ Son” contains 18 songs, most originals, and has received rave reviews here at home and in Britain and the US.

Here’s what Electro-Fi’s Andrew Galloway says:

“He's one of a kind, Julian.... It's like he's from another time, he's such a student of the blues. He kind of takes all the pieces of the puzzle and he puts it back together in a way that's much different than anyone else…. He does something that is virtually impossible to do, which is to take old style blues traditions, and not mimic it, but to combine that with his own original voice and lyricism, and it's just magical. It's a foot in the future and a foot in the past."

(Andrew Galloway interviewed by Eric Thom. Read the full interview at http://www.citynews.ca/news/news_32796.aspx)
