LOCAL HIGHLIGHTS THIS WEEK

********************************************************

Rocket Rached & the Fat City 8

Elmdale House Tavern, 1084 Wellington Street West

Friday, July 17 @ 9 pm; $7 cover

A rare chance to see this local ‘big band’ fronted by blues shouter,

Jed ‘Rocket’ Rached.

Here’s a note from Jed:

Well it’s been a long time coming but Fat City is back into the groove. On
the 17th of July the band and I will perform live for the 1st time in about 4
years. With all that we have done over the years getting back on stage
will be like coming home. The boys and I are hot to play and it’s been a
long time. We’re going to have a lot of special guests by way of players
who have graced the stage with us over the past dozen years or so. It
will be a night to be remembered. As an added bonus we are planning to
record the evening for a release later this year.
On the 17th we’ll be at the Elmdale House Tavern, which is great
sounding room with our host Nat and her crew bringing music in on
regular basis. Every new venue is a good thing, especially for the local
music scene. As many of you who know my love for the music is a very
big part of my life so getting the band back together to play is a great joy
and we hope that you all come down after the Bluesfest and bring your
dancing shoes and your party hats cause “we’re gonna burn the house
down!”

Bluesfest presents L’il Ed & the Blues Imperials

Monday, July 13 9 @ midnight

From smoking slide guitar boogies to raw-boned Chicago shuffles to the deepest slow blues, guitarist/vocalist/songwriter Lil’ Ed Williams is an awe-inspiring master bluesman. He and his blistering, road-tested band, The Blues Imperials—guitarist Mike Garrett, bassist James “Pookie” Young, drummer Kelly Littleton—are celebrating 20 amazing years together. Live, Lil’ Ed And The Blues Imperials simply can’t be beat as Ed breaks out the deepest back-bends, the highest toe-walks, and the most authentic electric slide-guitar blues being played today. Not since the heyday of Hound Dog Taylor & The HouseRockers has a Chicago blues band made such a consistently joyous, rollicking noise.

Brilliantly drawing upon contemporary urban black sounds while remaining respectful and true to their Zydeco roots, Lil Brian & The Travelers have created an incredibly exciting modern form of Zydeco music that is both rhythmically and lyrically sophisticated and just plain unbelievably funky!

You’ll have three chances to see this year’s Juno award winner in the Ottawa area. His Juno-winning CD, “Ramblin’ Son” contains 18 songs, most originals, and has received rave reviews here at home and in Britain and the US.

Here’s what Electro-Fi’s Andrew Galloway says:

“He's one of a kind, Julian.... It's like he's from another time, he's such a student of the blues. He kind of takes all the pieces of the puzzle and he puts it back together in a way that's much different than anyone else…. He does something that is virtually impossible to do, which is to take old style blues traditions, and not mimic it, but to combine that with his own original voice and lyricism, and it's just magical. It's a foot in the future and a foot in the past."

Black and Blues

with John Tackaberry

The show features a heavy dose of electric blues and rhythm and blues, with the occasional selection of sixties soul. The first hour is dedicated to artist profiles and reviews of recordings on particular labels. In the second hour there is a blues calendar, a rundown of events in Toronto, Montreal and Ottawa, and interviews with “new and reissued blues and rhythm and blues tracks on wax, alternating with “live blues and R&B for a Sunday night” in the last half hour of the show. On the last Sunday of every month, the show goes “down in the delta” for a selection of acoustic blues tracks in the final half hour of the program.
