POCONOS & VERMONT – FESTIVAL UPDATE

********************************************************

I’ve just returned from the 18th Annual Pocono Blues Festival … my 12th in the last 13 years (missing the 2006 festival drove me crazy!) The Pocono fest is the kind of event where fans wear their festival T-shirts proudly like membership badges … I saw a number people sporting Ts from the first festival in 1992, and countless from festivals since then.

For those who aren’t familiar with this festival, it’s held at the Big Boulder Ski Area in the Pocono Mountains of Pennsylvania (about 6 hours by car from Ottawa). There are two main stages, strategically situated so that the mountain itself serves as a noise buffer, but the acts on these two don’t overlap. There’s a third tent stage where you can sit down under cover from rain (occasional) or sun (more common). Tent acts sometimes appear on one of the main stages, but more often appear twice in the tent, so you can plan your day to see as many of the acts as possible. It’s pretty difficult to see it all … but more difficult to choose what to miss.

Pocono talent-booker Michael Cloeren himself has a talent … that of finding blues from ‘the road less travelled’ or at least less-often appearing on the summer festival circuit. Indeed, there are headliners at Poconos that you can and will see at other festivals. But there are also shows at Poconos that are virtually unique to this festival, or at least are not seen at major festivals that many of us attend.

For instance … one year (don’t ask me which … I’d have to sort through boxes of blues memorabilia and festival programs to sort out the dates) I saw Roy Roberts and the Rock House Records revue at Poconos. This year it was the Bone Dog Record Revue, with Tommy Brown, Strevee Wellons and Git Shorty and the Pittsburgh Gospel Lights (Sunday frequently kicks off with gospel or sacred steel). Along with headliners James Cotton with special guest Eddy ‘The Chief’ Clearwater on Saturday and Buckwheat Zydeco on Sunday, this year introduced me to Trombone Shorty and Orleans Avenue, and I got to see the wonderful Texas Johnny Brown receive a Pocono Lifetime Achievement Award. And I saw and heard the spoons played twice on Sunday. Want to guess who played them? You’ll never get the answer unless you were there too … first Harrison Kennedy in his acoustic set in the tent and then Ruthie Foster’s drummer Samantha Banks during Ruthie Main Stage set.

Over the years, I’ve seen Taj Mahal, the late Ruth Brown, the late Paul deLay, Saffire (at least twice, including last weekend), Otis Rush, Bobby ‘Blue’ Bland, Alberta Adams … the list goes on and on. The common thread? Solid real-deal blues (with a little soul thrown in now and then). The Pocono Blues Festival is acts you want to see because they’re well-known and you love them, and acts you didn’t know you wanted to see but now you can’t wait to see them again! I’m counting the days until next year’s festival!

BUT, there’s a ‘new kid on the block’, so you really don’t have to wait a whole year. The 1st Vermont Blues Festival takes place August 21-23 at Mount Snow, Vermont (approximately the same distance from Ottawa as Poconos). This festival has a spectacular inaugural line-up, including Mavis Staples, Elvin Bishop, Magic Slim & the Teardrops, Shemekia Copeland, Lil’ Ed and the Blues Imperials, Rosie Ledet and the Zydeco Playboys, Guy Davis, Johnny Rawls, Lil’ Dave Thompson, Wallace Coleman, Mississippi Heat, Studebaker John, and Samuel James.

“The facility is spectacular,” stated Michael Cloeren, the 1996 recipient of the Blues Foundation’s Keeping the Blues Alive Award for Promoter of the Year. “It has everything needed for the festival goer, a natural amphitheater acoustically perfect, on-site accommodations, on-site camping, plenty of free parking, and chairlift rides.”

The Vermont Blues Festival gets underway Friday, August 21, starting at 7 pm, with a soul food buffet followed by three national acts at the base of Mount Snow Ski Area. Saturday, August 22 music begins at 1 pm and goes on until 9:30 pm, followed by an After Fest All Star Blues Jam with Johnny Rawls. Sunday, August 23, music starts at noon and winds up at 8 pm.

This is a perfect opportunity to get *your* membership badge … attend the 1st Vermont Blues Festival and you can wear your festival T-shirt proudly for years to come!

Irene’s Blues Jam

Irene’s Pub, 885 Bank Street

Thursdays, 9 pm – 1 am

The Stellar Cast Blues Jam is a bonafide grass roots event that has grown out of the very floorboards of Irene’s Pub and has become a real crowd pleaser for musicians and music lovers alike. The Stellar Cast features Mike Ktenas (bass) and Corky Kealey (drums) as the foundation, and is filled out by a host of great local players who rotate according to availability. Each week the cast is topped up with a guest host who steers the song selections in whatever way they're inspired and the jamming begins. It's a great concept and the proof is in the popularity the night has garnered over the years.

Andre & the J-Tones

Rainbow, 76 Murray Street

Sunday, August 9 @ 9 pm

Andre Bisson is a relative newcomer to the blues scene. In his teens in Sault Ste Marie, he played rock ‘n’ roll, then R&B. In college, he studied jazz at Mohawk College in Hamilton, where he met the other members of the band, the J-Tones; all are professional musicians who have ‘day jobs’ teaching music. He’s just released his first CD, “Rhythm & Blues Experience”. Andre’s voice has been compared to some of the soul greats, but I hear a greater similarity to the sound of Joe Cocker. Almost all the tracks (nine of the ten are originals) are upbeat (‘Second Chance’ is the exception, with a smoky sax intro) and must fill the dance floor at live gigs. You can find out at the Rainbow on Sunday, August 9.

*******************************************************

Eddy ‘The Chief’ Clearwater

Rainbow, 76 Murray Street

Friday, August 14 @ 9:30 pm

Ottawa blues fans are fortunate – Eddy ‘The Chief’ Clearwater will be making a rare appearance in Ottawa, stopping off on his way to his gig at the Donnaconna Blues Festival in Quebec. When I saw Eddy last weekend, he asked me to tell all his Ottawa friends, “Meet me at the Rainbow on August 14!”

Eddy’s 2008 release “West Side Strut”, on the Alligator label, was nominated for a Blues Music Award in the Traditional Blues Recording category. Produced by Ronnie Baker Brooks, it features Lonnie Brooks, Jimmy Johnson, Billy Branch, Otis Clay and Ronnie and is described as “an energized mix of West Side blues and old school rock injected with a tough, up-to-the-minute contemporary edge”.

*******************************************************

Blues Cruise

With Bryan Lee & Jack DeKeyzer

Ottawa River Queen dock

Sunday, August 16; 2-6 pm; $50

Bryan played at the Old Absinthe Bar, on Bourbon Street in New Orleans, for 15 years during the 80s and 90s. This was a gig that went a long way to establish New Orleans as a blues town as well as the granddaddy of jazz. Guitarist and leader of the Jump Street Five Band at the time, Bryan Lee was faithful to his loyal fans and the music. Today Bryan Lee is still going strong, touring across the US, Canada and Europe playing the blues with the Blues Power Band.

Blues, jazz, funky r&b and swing are all part of the palette that colour Jack de Keyzer’s musical portraits. The much acclaimed guitarist, singer and song writer has worked with artists as varied as King Biscuit Boy, Etta James, Blue Rodeo, Robert Gordon, Otis Rush and the Bop Cats. His guitar playing has been featured on hundreds of recordings. He performs internationally over 150 shows per year, most recently at Blues Sur Seine in France. 8X Maple Blues and 2003 Juno Award winning artist Jack de Keyzer is a masterful, jazz infused electric blues guitarist, soulful singer and eclectic song writer of the first order.

The boat is located just in front of the Saint François-de-Sales church at the "Quai des Artistes" near Gréber blvd. and Jacques-Cartier in Gatineau Québec.

Community Radio serving the Ottawa Carleton Region

Sundays: 9-11 pm

Black and Blues

with John Tackaberry

The show features a heavy dose of electric blues and rhythm and blues, with the occasional selection of sixties soul. The first hour is dedicated to artist profiles and reviews of recordings on particular labels. In the second hour there is a blues calendar, a rundown of events in Toronto, Montreal and Ottawa, and interviews with “new and reissued blues and rhythm and blues tracks on wax, alternating with “live blues and R&B for a Sunday night” in the last half hour of the show. On the last Sunday of every month, the show goes “down in the delta” for a selection of acoustic blues tracks in the final half hour of the program.

This Sunday, Ron Sweetman will be standing in for John Tackaberry. The show he’s put together is called ‘The Blues Came To Europe’ and it documents twenty-one years of recordings made in Europe by American blues artists Big Bill Broonzy, Speckled Red, Memphis Slim, Champion Jack Dupree, Lonnie Johnson, Otis Spann, Big Joe Williams, Sonny Boy Williamson, Sunnyland Slim, Roosevelt Sykes, Sippie Wallace, Sleepy John Estes, Eddie Boyd, Sonny Terry, Brownie McGhee, Little Brother Montgomery, Robert Pete Williams and Jay McShann.
