Virée Blues Boréale brings together the best of “Hammer Town” or, if you prefer, of Hamilton (ON) Blues. At first sight, it doesn’t sound terribly “glamourous”, but that’s until one goes there as we did and discovers the large number of talented artists there. We are presenting you with the fusion between two complementary Blues generations, a logical and chronological suite of styles, Harrison Kennedy and his guest Steve Strongman, surrounded by world renown musicians: Alec Fraser, bassist, Dave King, drummer, and Harrison’s constant associate, Keith “Nappy” Lindsay on piano, accordion and other weird instruments.
Harrison Kennedy, a one of a kind storyteller, with original bluesy blood, with a seldom heard-of talent, a voice from the depths of the soul, entrancing, sustained by soul/gospel, blues- and funk-coated accompaniments, and by the brilliant performance of an all around artist who plays the guitar, the harmonica, the washboard as well as the kazoo... with great skill! A Canadian from Hamilton, Ontario, Harrison Kennedy met success in the ‘70s with The Chairmen Of The Board, a rhythm 'n' blues group that was a hit on Detroit’s and all of North America’s Motown stages. With over one million albums sold, Harrison Kennedy started feeling disillusioned with the recording industry and the Disco fashion. With his guitar, he then came back to his roots, and to the music that he’s always been playing, the Blues. Back on the international scene in 2004, he recorded three blues albums, and we will get a preview from his upcoming album, “One Dog Barking”, to be recorded next month.
Let’s spend a moment on the future legend, Steve Strongman. He went through a similar course: beginning his professional career at 16, Steve toured the clubs of southern Ontario with many rock, country and blues groups; then, in 2007, after over 20 years of touring the US, Canada and Europe, the call of his always strong blues roots brings him back to reason. The result is his first blues album, “Honey”: a traditional sound, that of the old school, a heavy blues carried by his warm voice, by a guitar played with unbelievable technique, with emotion and with just the right amount of wild harmonica. This marvelous CD, highly praised by the critics teamed with his success at the International Blues Contest, in Memphis, TN suddenly made him the New Blues Sensation. The momentum is at its peak to launch his new album “Blues in Colour”, just a few days before his performance at Virée Blues Boréale.

A little something for the body, a little something for the mind: your soundtrack to a joyful revolution. Mr. Something Something represents four years of composing, performing, risk-taking, improving and ultimately mobilizing the original vision of founding members Larry Graves [drums/percussion] and John MacLean [saxophone/voice]. Twenty years of playing, studying and traveling passed before these two childhood friends settled on the unbeatable dance rhythms of Nigeria, Senegal, Mali and Ghana as the most natural gathering place for the elements that would ultimately make up the Mr. Something Something sound.
Western instruments and concepts of improvisation are explored and layered over what used to be called Afrobeat; but the term strains to contain the innovations happening in the rhythm section at every show. It also fails to express in fiery-enough terms the imaginative solo work of respected jazz guitarist Paul MacDougall. Liam Smith dependably delivers basslines designed to induce and sustain a state of ecstatic dancing. And there is always inspiration to be drawn from mesmerizing on-stage dancer/choreographer Jennifer Dallas. The horn section strikes with power and uplifts with melody. And above it all, acting as a lightning rod, is the lyric statement of the case for change and consciousness, passionately delivered by electrifying frontman Johan Hultqvist.
Aside from wildly energized and unpredictable live shows, the band is becoming increasingly well-known for its green politics and environmental activism. The group did a number of “eco-dates” in 2007, playing a wind-powered show and performing in such unconventional venues as organic farms and food co-ops to highlight communities that are trying to minimize their ecological footprints.
The fresh sound and powerful message of the band’s second album “The Edge” led to a nomination for a 2007 Juno Award for World Music Album of the Year. Over the last three years the band has toured relentlessly in Canada, playing more than 300 shows, including appearances at most major jazz festivals and many folk festivals from coast to coast.

Al Kirkcaldy, a friend to all things Blues, passed on February 12th due to complications resulting from his battle with cancer. Al championed the Blues whether it was introducing a new local artist or promoting an established international star – and he did both with equal verve. For Al, all roads led to the Blues.
Al hosted "blue in the face" on CFFF (92.7 FM) in Peterborough, wrote a regular Blues column in The Examiner, booked the Peterborough Holiday Inn Summer Blues Series, and was on the nominating committee for both the Blues Music Awards and the Maple Blues Awards. He had impeccable musical taste and his engaging manner when conducting interviews provided an opportunity to display the wit that characterized him.
Two time W.C. Handy / Blues Music Award nominee Darrell Nulisch will be joining the All-Star line-up of artists scheduled to perform in celebration of Al Kirkcaldy’s life on Sunday April 5th at Market Hall, Peterborough.
Nulisch, one of the most soulful singers and harp players in the business, will be joining an outstanding list of performers including: Jack de Keyzer, Paul Reddick, Rick Fines, John Mays, Omar Tunnoch and Bucky Berger of Fathead, Roxanne Potvin, and many more.
In addition to the music, there will also be draws for an array of exceptional prizes:

Out of 100 bands from around the world, MonkeyJunk placed THIRD! In a recent post on his website (http://www.morgandavis.com/04History/04Hist08.html), Morgan celebrated the HALF-a-MILLION "K" mark on his Astro van. He says:
“Well now folks here's how it all come to be .... I bought the Astro van back in '98. I was then driving the second of my Suburbans, and gas prices were climbing. The Suburban got about 11 MPG (with the wind behind it), so I had to go economy ... bought the Astro because you sit up high, (so good visibility), and it had a 6 instead of the big 350 V-8. Well now, all these kilometres, over 11 years, comes to about 43,000 kms (or about 25,000 miles) a year! ... that would be the circumference of this earth! So each year, I drive the equivalent of once around the world. I change the oil every 5000 kms (3000 miles), keep the tire pressure right, and listen close when it's talkin' to you. Hey General Motors!!... I'm ready for sponsorship!”
For 33 years, Morgan Davis has played the blues in Canada from Victoria, BC to St. John’s, Newfoundland, as well as Europe and the US. Morgan writes the songs, drives the truck, sets up the gear and performs traditional and original blues. His venues range from 30 seat coffee houses in the BC interior and Annapolis Valley to huge folk and blues festivals, performing for crowds of thousands. Playing with a band for the first 25 years of his career, recent years have seen Davis make a successful transition to performing as a solo artist. During his years on the road, Morgan perfected his repertoire of Blues classics, songs that figure prominently in his performances today. His style is taut and tough, and relies on intensity rather than speed and pyrotechnics to make its point. Fusion! It’s in the air in British Columbia. From food to music, via theatre, visual and media arts, dance and literature, B.C. artists are collaborating to present a new kind of artistic experience. In spring 2009, Canada’s National Arts Centre will present 600 artists from all disciplines on the stages of the nation’s capital, and you’re invited.
BC Scene will celebrate a dynamic culture that is the fusion of traditional and contemporary, East and West and established and emerging artists from all parts of the province. Musicians, actors, dancers, visual and media artists, writers and master chefs will be bringing their magic to concert halls, theatres, galleries, bars, clubs, museums and restaurants in the national spotlight. While showcasing B.C. artists to diverse audiences, the Scene will also offer a chance for 80 national and international presenters to discover the best of contemporary B.C. talent. With over 90 events, BC Scene will present a vast living portrait of the province, capturing its edgy creativity and palpable energy – one represented by artists from every discipline, fusing history, modernity, cultural diversity and art to create something entirely new.

With a sound as unique as her name, Vancouver native Ndidi Onukwulu is steeped in the blues, and talented enough to make you feel it. She has proven she can wrap her silky voice around anything from country blues to her own rootsy salon sound.
While singing a capella on New York City’s open mic circuit, Ndidi started jamming with some of the most accomplished hip hop and blues players on the scene. After leaving New York for Toronto, she sang in a rock band, and then in an electronic one. It was great training for her voice, but Ndidi ultimately stood by the blues music that first inspired her and developed a style that “demands to be listened to.”
Expect some amazing chemistry when Ndidi is joined onstage at BC Scene by guitarist Dave Sikula, violinist and mandolin player Jesse Zubot, drummer Skye Brooks and bassist Roey Shemesh.

Famous for his evocative, smoky vocals, Jim Byrnes has been on the blues highway since his first professional gig in 1964, and has appeared on stage with a virtual who’s who of musical history including Muddy Waters, John Lee Hooker, Robert Cray, and Ray Charles. Multi-instrumentalist, producer and multi-award winner Steve Dawson is constantly striving for unique sounds and approaches to acoustic music. His instrumental abilities have landed him on stages with artists as diverse as Gil Scott-Heron, Long John Baldry, Justin Rutledge, and Oh Susanna, to name just a few.
Jim hosts this special evening, which also includes the talents of up-and-coming gospel trio The Sojourners (seasoned vocalists Will Sanders, Ron Small and Marcus Mosely) who originally came together to provide background vocals for Jim’s 2006 album “House of Refuge.” He was so pleased with the trio’s contribution to his CD that he christened them “The Sojourners” and it stuck.
Now the veterans and the up-and-comers get together on stage for a one-of-a-kind evening of soulful blues and gospel music.

Montreal based Stephen Barry and his band have been playing their great style of blues for so long he is known as "the father of Quebec blues". For years Michael Jerome Browne was a key member of the band as the lead singer playing guitarist, mandolin and fiddle before he branched out to a very successful solo career as an acoustic roots/blues artist. Either one of them is worth the price of admission. What a special treat to have them reunited and playing together for these two Shows.

A look at legendary blues musician Buddy Guy, an artist whose dynamic guitar playing helped to define the sound of Chicago’s Chess Records. While he was on that label, Guy played with Muddy Waters, Howlin' Wolf and Sonny Boy Williamson.
“First Time I Met the Blues: The Buddy Guy Story” is hosted by Dan Aykroyd, the Canadian actor who was one-half of The Blues Brothers. You’ll hear how deeply influential Guy has been, especially with English rock musicians who grew up worshipping his work. In addition to an extensive interview with the blues master himself, the program features comments from his long-time partner Junior Wells, Robert Plant, Eric Clapton, Carlos Santana and Mick Fleetwood.

In the second hour there is a blues calendar, a rundown of events in Toronto, Montreal and Ottawa, and interviews with “new and reissued blues and rhythm and blues tracks on wax, alternating with “live blues and R&B for a Sunday night” in the last half hour of the show. On the last Sunday of every month, the show goes “down in the delta” for a selection of acoustic blues tracks in the final half hour of the program.
