VOTE FOR THE BEST LIVE MUSIC CLUB IN CANADA

********************************************************

Zaphod Beeblebrox - voted one of the Top 10 in CBC Radio 3's search for Canada's Best Live Music Club. PLEASE VOTE TO MAKE OTTAWA #1.

Thanks to our supporters in the Nation's Capital and around the world, Zaphod Beeblebrox has reached the Top 10 in CBC Radio 3’s Searchlight poll for Canada’s Best Live Music Club. We recognize that we represent the vision of patrons, musicians, staff and owners of this region's live music clubs (see list below) and we are motivated on their behalf to encourage folks to propel us to the top.

YOU helped us get this far, now let's try and go all the way! The bottom line is if YOU don't vote for Ottawa, some OTHER club in the country will win.

The owner of one of the clubs in this contest put all of this in perspective on CBC Radio 3's blog:

We are all winners I reckon

"first of all, glad to be recognized nationally as a presenter of fine Canadian indie music....I have noticed in the blogs that most of us owners/ staff have been told that great story once again by a musician that we are all the very best there is....and you know we are all the best....we all present original music and each and every performance is as good as it gets ....we all get to leave our daily troubles behind and go where ever the bands choose to take us...way cool as regular job I would say....."

Here are some of the National Capital's Clubs and Promoters that present live original music on a regular basis. We are proud to be among them.

The Mighty Popo

The Rainbow, 76 Murray Street

Friday, February 27

You could say that the Mighty Popo is a Rwandan/Burundian refugee/survivor whose music is steeped in African tradition but, as much as Popo has inherited a love of the traditional music of Rwanda and Burundi, he also has a lifelong connection with rock and roll, blues, jazz, R&B, Reggae and folk traditions. His music reflects his immersion in a world culture which he has navigated with grace, sensitivity and an enormous sense of exploration and fun. It is enriched by many traditions. It is authentically his. It is validated by its own excellence. Yes, the Mighty Popo is a Rwandan/Burundian refugee/ survivor whose music is steeped in African tradition. He is also one terrific musician and someone to watch – in Canada and around the world.

Lucie Idlout

+ Tara Holloway

Zaphod Beeblebrox, 27 York Street, Ottawa ON

Saturday, February 28; doors open @ 8 pm

With the recent resurrection of vintage rock, one of the most interesting arrivals on the scene is singer/ songwriter Lucie Idlout. Her music is hard hitting, raw and to the point. She has a voice that at times echoes the crooning of the likes of Etta James, and is as provocative and unique as Marianne Faithful. Though she comes from the newest territory, Nunavut, in Canada's Arctic, she is not the typical stereotype associated musically with Aboriginal people.

Lucie's commanding style takes you on an emotional journey drawing on themes that are common to us all; heartwreck, lust and rage. She has toured clubs and rock festivals extensively across Canada and Europe, garnering rave revues wherever she travels. She was host to the top rated Entertainment Magazine, Buffalo Tracks, on APTN, and has acted in a score of theatre pieces, but music has always proven to be home.

She was awarded Best Female Artist at the 2003 Canadian Aboriginal Music Awards and has been nominated for Best Rock Album at both the Canadian Aboriginal Music Awards and the Indian Summer Music Awards in Milwaukee, WI. Her follow-up album, Swagger, is slated for release in February 2009.

Virée Blues Boreale 9th edition presents

Mike Goudreau and the Boppin’ Blues Band

Club Addiction, 117 Promenade du Portage, Old Hull Sector, Gatineau QC

Wednesday, February 25

It’s been a long journey since the first demo recorded live by the BBB on a cassette recorder in the basement of Mike Goudreau’s father; that was 17 years ago. Since then, Mike Goudreau and the Boppin’ Blues Band performed in thousands of concerts and festivals – seven times at the Montreal International Jazz Festival and three times at Virée Blues Boreale! They have received awards and composed and recorded over 100 songs on their 10 albums, as well as on many Blues and Jazz compilations distributed all over the world. But it’s in the United States that Mike Goudreau made the most impressive breakthrough. Indeed our southern neighbours celebrated, before we did, Blues sung in French as well as Blues from Quebec. We now can find Mike Goudreau on top of many American charts as well as on the broadcasts of many American channels like NBC, ABC, CBS and others.

Mike Goudreau, the instigator who passed the passion for the Blues on to Alexandre Petit, your faithful Virée Blues Boreale producer, is coming to launch his 10th album “Blues Et Cetera” here at Virée Blues Boreale first, before Quebec and Montreal. As suggested by the title, this more current album, with 15 new original songs, goes into different Blues styles, with reggae, pop/folk, country and world music influences as well as Texas Blues, Chicago Blues, funky, swing Blues and for sure the ‘rockin’, rompin’, stompin’ which has proven successful for Goudreau for over 17 years.

Many new musicians perform on this new recording, including Roger Walls, the legendary trumpet player who will be with us to perform at the launch. Drummer Simon Bergeron, son of Richard Bergeron, drummer and founding member of the BBB, brings youth and dynamism on top of solid rhythms and a dazzling creativity. Also on this album are the regulars: Nino Fabi on organ and piano, David Elias on sax and arranger for the brass section, Maxime St-Pierre on trumpet, Serge Arsenault on trombone, Dany Roy on sax and Sylvain Daigneault on piano. And, special guests Didier Dumoutier and Pierre-Olivier Ouellet on accordion and Eric Kory on cello join in.

To present a really prestigious launch, Virée Blues Boreale, Mike Goudreau will perform together with the complete Boppin’ Blues Band. The six musician ensemble will surely please everyone, performing the past and future hits which make up “Blues Et Cetera”.

FEBRUARY IS BLACK HISTORY MONTH

********************************************************

In 1995, the Government of Canada designated February as Black History Month (BHM), to celebrate the contribution of people of African descent to the Canadian mosaic. The theme for 2009 is “The Courage to Make a Difference,” to honour the role of Black community leaders and pioneers in the evolution of Canada as a nation. This theme will be highlighted in all BHM 2009 activities, which also serve to celebrate the pivotal role played by not-for-profit and volunteer-led community organizations, in promoting the integration of Black people into the larger society and improving the quality of their lives. All residents and visitors to our great city are welcome to join the celebrations.

Max Cann
Blueberry Hill Bistro,
16 High, Vankleek Hill ON

Tuesday, March 17, 7-10 pm; $10

2 Beans Café. Main Street South, Alexandria ON
Wednesday, March 18, 7-10 pm; $10

There’s humour in Max Cann’s live presentations, as well as thoughtfulness, and sentiment (not much sentimentality, though). Most of all, there’s variety and Cann is proof that if you’re still doing music after 35 years, you’re certain to be very good at it.

Those of you who attended the Max Cann gig at Blueberry Hill will remember what an enjoyable evening it was. Max was visiting here last year from Torquay, England and decided to record at Terry Gillespie’s Heaven’s Radio Studio in Vankleek Hill, returning later in the year to introduce the public to his new CD “Opener”. Well, MAX IS BACK! Terry will be accompanying Max on guitar.

Mr. Something Something

Rainbow, 76 Murray Street

Friday, March 27 @ 9:30 pm

A little something for the body, a little something for the mind: your soundtrack to a joyful revolution. Mr. Something Something represents four years of composing, performing, risk-taking, improving and ultimately mobilizing the original vision of founding members Larry Graves [drums/percussion] and John MacLean [saxophone/voice]. Twenty years of playing, studying and traveling passed before these two childhood friends settled on the unbeatable dance rhythms of Nigeria, Senegal, Mali and Ghana as the most natural gathering place for the elements that would ultimately make up the Mr. Something Something sound.

Western instruments and concepts of improvisation are explored and layered over what used to be called Afrobeat; but the term strains to contain the innovations happening in the rhythm section at every show. It also fails to express in fiery-enough terms the imaginative solo work of respected jazz guitarist Paul MacDougall. Liam Smith dependably delivers basslines designed to induce and sustain a state of ecstatic dancing. And there is always inspiration to be drawn from mesmerizing on-stage dancer/choreographer Jennifer Dallas. The horn section strikes with power and uplifts with melody. And above it all, acting as a lightning rod, is the lyric statement of the case for change and consciousness, passionately delivered by electrifying frontman Johan Hultqvist.

Aside from wildly energized and unpredictable live shows, the band is becoming increasingly well-known for its green politics and environmental activism. The group did a number of “eco-dates” in 2007, playing a wind-powered show and performing in such unconventional venues as organic farms and food co-ops to highlight communities that are trying to minimize their ecological footprints.

The fresh sound and powerful message of the band’s second album “The Edge” led to a nomination for a 2007 Juno Award for World Music Album of the Year. Over the last three years the band has toured relentlessly in Canada, playing more than 300 shows, including appearances at most major jazz festivals and many folk festivals from coast to coast.
