She received Grammy nominations in 2001 and 2005 and is now touring in support of her newest project, the CD “Yes We Can!”, a boldly political album which was released just a few weeks ago. He produced about a dozen albums, among which his last, “Humdinger” launched in 2007. The popular Blues on the Rideau Dinner & Show Series at The Cove Inn, Westport Ontario begins its 4th season on October 17 & 18 with blues great piano/vocalist Curley Bridges backed by one of Canada’s most versatile and talented musicians – Chris Whiteley (guitar, harmonica, trumpet and vocals) and his excellent band – Bucky Berger or Bob Vespaziani on drums and Victor Bateman on bass.

Curley Bridges was born in North Carolina in 1934 and started his career in the 1950s inspired by blues greats Louis Jordan, Big Joe Turner and Billie Holiday (with whom he had a close friendship). His high-energy piano and deep, powerful voice made him a very popular entertainer. In the ‘50s he hooked up with red-hot blues trumpeter Frank Motley & His Crew touring throughout the US and Canada for over two decades. In 1966 he moved to Toronto and started his own band, The Rounders, playing around Ontario until 1981 when he moved to Barrie and largely disappeared from the music scene. Andrew Galloway from ElectroFi Records re-discovered him in 1998 and got him to record a new CD – “Keys To The Blues” followed by “Mr. Rock ‘n Soul” in 2001. Both feature some of the best blues piano and singing you will hear anywhere. Since then Curley has come out of retirement to play select festivals and clubs. We are very pleased and honoured to have them back – Curley and Chris were the first act to play Blues On The Rideau at The Cove in January 2006.
Chris Whiteley has backed Curley since appearing on his CDs. A member of the famous Whiteley musical family (brother Ken, daughter Jenni, sons Dan & Jesse) – Chris is one of Canada’s most versatile and talented blues/jazz/roots musicians – singer, songwriter, producer, guitarist, harmonica, trumpet player & more. He has played on 150 different albums over his 25+ year career with artists as diverse as Stompin’ Tom Connors, John Hammond, Prairie Oyster and David Wilcox, as well as recording several of his own. His most recent collaboration was with Canadian blues diva Diana Braithwaite: “Morning Sun” – a delightful tribute to the Bluebird label songs of the ‘30s & ‘40s. (Note: Chris & Diana played here in March 2007). A 6-time Juno Award nominee, multiple Maple Blues Award and Jazz Report Award winner – Chris and his great band are worth the price of admission on their own – having them play with Curley is a double treat!

Blues on the Rideau at The Cove Inn, Westport ON enters its 4th season starting October 17/18 and will run on the third weekend of every month (except December) through to June 2009. The Series features some of Canada’s best blues artists performing in the friendly, cozy atmosphere of The Cove combined with a delicious buffet dinner. Effective immediately, Talkin’Blues Media Inc. is piloting a series of “Talkin’Blues video podcasts” which will be available – absolutely free of charge – through the iTunes Store and http://talkinblues.podbean.com . To subscribe to these podcasts, go to the iTunes store, click on video podcasts and search “Talkin’Blues podcasts” or go to www.talkinblues.com and select the “podcast” option.
“The goal of these podcasts is simple: to provide more blues/roots music content on the iTunes network. Each will consist of one or two songs, together with a short interview with the featured artist. Each podcast will be a condensed, slightly simplified version of the Talkin’Blues television series. I am hoping to produce a number of episodes to monitor interest in the project, with decisions to continue based on the outcome”, says series producer, Mako Funasaka.
The first video podcast features Billy Boy Arnold performing “Squeeze Me Tight” from his latest Electro-Fi CD release, “Billy Boy sings Sonny Boy”. This video also features Mel Brown, Willie “Big Eyes” Smith, Bob Stroger and Billy Flynn. Several other podcasts have been completed and will be published every 3 – 5 weeks. Future podcasts will include The Fabulous Thunderbirds, Ruthie Foster, Gary Clark Jr., Julian Fauth and Watermelon Slim – to name a few.
In addition to producing these video podcasts, Mako Funasaka and his wife, Patti recently spent a week in Notodden, Norway to document interviews, workshops and performances at the Notodden Blues Festival for the future European Blues Senter (Center). The European Blues Senter is scheduled to be built in Notodden, Norway over the next few years.
“It’s truly an honour to be working with Jostein Forsberg and everyone at the European Blues Senter in Norway on this project”, says Funasaka. “It’s a compliment that they would include our work in presenting the Blues to their audiences. To be able to get in on the ground floor with such an exciting project is a wonderful opportunity for us and we’re absolutely thrilled about it.”
